"Yeah, I was wondering, would you like to go with me to that café?" Destiny asked through her tiny pink cell phone. "Yeah…uh huh…sure…okay see you then…bye," she said and hung up.
Carefully, she turned the corner and started up Megan’s street. After another minute, her house appeared. She put her blinker down and turned to the right.
"Hey there!" Megan exclaimed bouncing into the car.
"Ready?" Destiny asked.
Megan strapped herself in and gave Destiny a not-so-sure look. "I guess," she said.
"Oh come on, Meg. He can’t think that I believe that he likes me," Destiny said. She took a left. "I mean, its morally wrong," she said and stopped at a stop sign. Right then a red sports car pulled up beside them. Megan pointed towards Destiny’s left. "Oh no!" she muttered and rolled her window down.
"Hey there ladies," Taylor said from the drivers side. He had three girls in his car with him.
"What the hell?" Destiny asked, annoyance in her voice.
"Oooh Taylor," one of the girls squealed.
"Shh baby…not now," Taylor said.
Destiny made a disgusted look at Megan. "Stop following me," she noticed the light was now green and as soon as she said that, she squealed away, leaving Taylor in her dust. "Jerk," she muttered as she drove to the café.
"I really think Taylor is up to something," Destiny said pacing her house that night.
"Destiny, stop worrying. Why do you worry so much?" Megan asked from her couch.
Destiny didn’t stop pacing. "I don’t know, Meg. I really don’t know," she said truthfully.
"I think you like him," Megan said.
"He wishes," Destiny spat.
"Really Des, I mean, why would you be so uptight? You’ve never been this uptight about a guy before," Megan said.
"Please Megan. Taylor isn’t worth anything to me," she said. But truthfully, Destiny didn’t know. Something about Taylor made her feel differently. Why did it seem in one minute he liked her and the next he didn’t? It wasn’t making any sense at all. She was beginning to bottle her true feelings, and yet she knew she shouldn’t be. But she just couldn’t explain how she was feeling. "I feel like I’m going to throw up," Destiny said.
"Do you want me to leave?" Megan asked.
Destiny shook her head. "No. But I do think its time we had a talk," Destiny said sitting down next to her best friend.
Sunday rolled around the following day. Taylor had yet again ran into Destiny "by accident." Once again, he invited her over. That night, Destiny found herself walking up the steps to his front porch. And again, no one was home.
"You made it," Taylor said as he held the door open for her.
"Yeah, I did," Destiny said walking into the house and following him to the couch.
"Sit," Taylor instructed. Destiny did this time. Something about tonight made her feel different. She was beginning to feel very afraid.
"How do you always know where I am?" Destiny asked.
"Don’t ask questions, Des. Just…live in the moment," his eyes darted from hers and looked around the room and then he looked back at hers.
"Okay," Destiny said. Suddenly, she heard a muffled noise. "What was that?" she asked.
"Nothing," Taylor said looking away from her and over her shoulder.
Destiny began to panic. "Taylor…what’s going on?" she asked sternly. Then, three people fell out from behind the closet.
"Damn you guys. I told you to wait!" Taylor yelled.
"What’s the town slut doing here?" Michael Carter asked.
"Yeah, town slut. You don’t even deserve Taylor’s eye," Richard Parks said coming up in front of her.
Destiny looked at Taylor who looked amused. "How could you?" she asked in a hurt tone.
Taylor tried to fight a giggle. "Town slut, you’ll never learn will you?"
"What do you mean?" Destiny asked.
Taylor laughed and then looked over at his buddies. "This is a set up, don’t you see?"
"No, but what I see is a very ignorant beast. Taylor, leave me alone!" Destiny yelled and raised a hand to Taylor.
Taylor caught her hand in mid-air. "I wouldn’t do that if I were you," he said.
"And why’s that?" Destiny mocked his voice. But inside, she felt like crying.
"Because of them," he said as he pointed to the two girls who came into the room crossing their arms over their chests.
Not saying a word, Destiny ran from the house. As she was leaving, she could hear Taylor’s voice say, "Why would I want that trash hanging off me? I don’t want anything to do with her. But I know that prank was so funny." She ran down the driveway, feeling the hot tears stream down her cheeks.
