Loose Screws Improvises an all-new “Kabuki”
Contact: R. Kevin Doyle (808) 523-1004
Loose Screws, Honolulu’s longest running Improvisational Theatre Company, presents the world premiere of its latest spontaneous production, “Loose Screws Kabuki!” Inspired by the classical drama of Japan, but performed entirely in English, “Loose Screws Kabuki” opens at WCC’s Little Theatre on Thursday, November 2 at 8pm, and continues on November 3, 4, 9, 10 and 11 at 8pm, with a 2pm matinee on Sunday, November 12, 2000.
Set in Japan in the late 18th Century, “Loose Screws Kabuki” employs the traditional acting techniques of Japan’s Kabuki theatre. No previous knowledge of Kabuki is necessary to enjoy the show. Loose Screws will solicit stories from the audience (sometimes in the form of newspaper clippings) and use these stories to create an original two-act Kabuki production, complete with costumes, make-up and wigs. As with all of Loose Screws’ one-act productions, the show is completely improvised from start to finish. On any given night, the show may be funny, serious, enlightening, tragic, or just plain weird. It will always be a unique experience; no two shows are exactly alike, and most don’t resemble each other in the slightest! The Japanese form includes dramatic physical and vocal stylizations
Cast members for “Loose Screws Kabuki” include Robb Bonnell, Chris Doi, R. Kevin Doyle, Walter Eccles, Cindy Kusuda, Sean T.C. O’Malley, Tony Pisculli, Kristin Van Bodergroven, and Cassandra Wormser. While Doyle has been coaching improv skills and leading this project, the entire group will contribute to the final shape of each nights show. Indeed, improvised theatre is one of the most collaborative forms of theatre.
Tickets for “Loose Screws Kabuki” are $10, and are available for purchase one hour before show time at the WCC Little Theatre box office. Audience members will get a dollar off for bringing a newspaper or magazine clipping of a short article of human interest. For more information, call R. Kevin Doyle at (808) 523-1004.
