And Then There Were Four...

Superstardom, splitting up and life after Geri. TV HITS caught up with the Spice Girls to bring you the real story in this exclusive chat...

OK, girls, tell us the truth! When did you know Geri was leaving?
Posh:
All we can say at this time is that obviously we were really upset. But friendship never ends and we're still there for Geri.
Sporty: We're all still friends! There wasn't any major fall out, it was just time for Geri to move on.
Scary: And now it's time for us to move on!

But you must have been disappointed with Geri?
Scary:
To be honest, I feel ... I think we all feel disappointed for our fans more than anything.
Baby: Yeah, the fans are what's important. Obviously we were all very shocked and saddened...
Scary: (Butting in) Very shocked.
Baby: But we're more determined than ever now.

So you're not splitting up then?
All:
(Shouting No way!
Sporty: You can't get rid of us that easily!
Baby: There's no way we're splitting up - we have so much more to give. We've already started work on our third album, which'll be out early next year.
Posh: Don't forget about the singles this year...
Baby: We're going to take this album a bit more slowly and enjoy writing it. Mel B and I like writing from experience, so we'll be working on it while we tour America. We've already written a couple of tracks which we're excited about.

Who'll miss Ginger the most?
Scary:
I think we all will. Each of us will miss Geri for our own reasons.
Sporty: It was weird though, very strange at first. But we're just as strong as a foursome. Actually, we're all just as excited to see what Geri's going to do.

Do you know what she's planning to do?
Sporty:
Oh, I don't think even Geri knows yet!
Posh: Whatever she decides to do, she'll be successful. This is Geri we're talking about!

Will Geri still be a bridesmaid at Posh's wedding?
Sporty:
What are you talking about? We're not even bridesmaids! (laughs)
Posh: (Looking embarrassed) That's true! But like we've said, we are all still friends, and if I decide I want bridesmaids, you'll be the first to know who they are!

Will you guys be changing your image, maybe even your names?
Scary:
Nah, I like my name - it kind of suits me!
Posh: Yes, I like mine too. As for our image, we wear exactly what we want to, and as we're growing up our taste will change a bit, and so will our clothes.
Baby: I don't want to change my name, or my clothes for that matter!
Sporty: That's why Geri left - she was sick of being called Ginger! (laughs)

How have your fans responded to all this drama?
Sporty:
Our fans have always been absolutely brilliant! We've had a bit of a rollercoaster ride, but they've always been there for us, no matter what. They're outside our hotels now, shouting things like, "Come on girls, you can do it!"
Scary: I don't know if they realise, but when we hear and see that, it really encourages us. That's why we're gonna work really hard to give back more to them.

When can we expect to hear a new single that you've written as a foursome?
Sporty:
We'll have something brand new in time for Christmas, and it's going to be brilliant. In January we'll be doing something we've never done before, but you'll find out about that soon.

What will the new album sound like?
Scary:
Spice Girls will always be about pop, but we will be experimenting so our fans find it more interesting. We'll be doing solos and duets and a few things like that.

Do you have anyone in mind for a duet?
Scary:
I'd love to work with Prince!
Sporty: I've always wanted to work with Madonna. And she's coming to our show in New York, so I mightask her!

Does the thought of splitting up scare you?
Sporty:
Not really, because when it happens, it'll be our decision. Being on tour, all your priorities change and you realise chart positions are not so important. What's important is going out and playing to thousands of people and putting a smile on their face.
Posh:It's about our friendship and our philosophy, and even if the music were to end, Spice Girls would still continue.
Scary: I don't think the music will ever end!
Posh: (Pulling at half of Scary's chewing gum and putting it in her mouth!) No, what I'm saying is that whatever happens, we'll still all be mates.

Do you have a message for all your Australian fans?
Posh:
Just a big thankyou, as everyone's been so supportive.
Scary: I think I speak for all of us in that we have to say we're really, really sorry about what's happened. Most importantly, don't worry, 'cause we've plenty more tricks up our sleeves!

Finally! What are you most looking forward to doing when you finish up your current tour?
Coming home and throwing a massive, massive party - and we've already started to organise it. Are TV HITS invited? Of course!
