DINO CAZARES
of FEAR FACTORY

Interview from 1998
The MUEN Vault

(Dino Cazares) We gotta get rolling because I got so much shit to do! Let's get rooooliiinnn'!!!

(MUEN) OKAY, OKAY, IN THE BIO IT SAYS...

(Dino) Ah @#!! the bio!!

(MUEN) WELL I WAS GOING TO ASK YOU...

(Dino) One time I read a bio - I'm going to tell you a joke, alright? But it actually really happened. I read a bio on us and you know how they described us? Aggressive Rock... Heee heee hah!!! That's why I say F#!!! the bio!

(MUEN) ABOUT THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE NEW ALBUM 'OBSOLETE', THE "MAN VERSES MACHINE" CONCEPT...

(Dino) Well on 'Demanufacture', it was man verses machine... war against machines. But now, on the new album, the machines have pretty much taken over, and man has become obsolete. Man created machines to make life easier and it ended up making man weaker! He made the machines to be more intelligent, to the point where they ended up turning against him. Man has become a slave to the machine, and no longer is he controlling them. I mean in America, you notice it already - like there are certain automobile corporations where they laid all these people off - like in Philadelphia. Now they have machines doing everything. Their jobs have become obsolete.

(MUEN) WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH TOM HOLKENBORG ON THE JUNKIE XL DEBUT?

(Dino) Tom Holkenborg? That's cool!! - you know about Junkie XL?

(MUEN) YEAH, WE REVIEWED THAT CD MONTHS AGO.

(Dino) Really...? Was it a good or bad review?

(MUEN) IT WAS GOOD!

(Dino) Yeah Tom did a couple tracks on our 'Remanufacture'. He also did a single in Europe that never got out in America. It was definitely really cool working with him because I had done techno like that in the past - so it wasn't like anything new to me, and it felt really natural. Plus, he's just a really cool guy, he's a really creative guy, too.

(MUEN) IS FEAR FACTORY PLANNING ANY MORE RE-MIXES?

(Dino) Not really. I mean we may do some here and there for a special B-side single or something, but not a full EP or LP. It would confuse too many people. You seem like you're a little more open-minded, and you probably know the evolution of Fear Factory, but there are a lot of kids that had discovered us on 'Demanufacture', and didn't know that we had done stuff like that in the past. It's not that Fear Factory is going to be a techno band on this record. Obviously we've proved that.

(MUEN) DID YOU ASK SARA MCLACHLAN TO DO A DUET WITH YOU GUYS?

(Dino) Yeah, we asked her to sing on the record. At first she was like "Well send me the track." So we sent her "Timelessness". I know it sounds cheesy, but I think it would have been really cool. So we sent her the track and she was like "Well, yeah, maybe." But then, we made the mistake of sending her other songs... like off the other CD, and when she heard that, she was like f#@!! no! At first Burt wanted to do a duet with some other stupid chick, and we said no, let's do it with somebody better.

(MUEN) WHO WAS THE OTHER CHICK?

(Dino) That singer from Manhole (now Tura Satana.)

(MUEN) OH TAIRRE B.?

(Dino) Yeah. We thought, "Why do you want to do a duet with this chick? She can't sing worth shit! We said let's shoot for something higher - you know what I mean?

(MUEN) WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH SOULFLY?

(Dino) That was really cool. I've known Max for like ten years. He's my bro. When he asks me to do anything, I'm there! It's good to be a part of him doing something different.

(MUEN) DO YOU THINK SEPULTURA WILL BE AS GOOD WITHOUT HIM?

(Dino) Yeah. But it will no doubt be different without him.

(MUEN) THEY GOT SOME HARDCORE GUY FROM NEW YORK TO TAKE HIS PLACE.

(Dino) Yeah, and you know what? He's good. Up at Roadrunner Records I heard a couple tracks, f#!!in' bad ass. You're gonna be surprised. A lot of people have doubts, you know what I mean... "Ah Max left the band..." Remember Faith No More? When the original singer left? When Chuck left, it was like a great move and it worked! I think that's what's going to happen here. And I hate to say it because Max is a really good friend of mine.

(MUEN) YOUR WEBSITE IS ONE OF THE MOST DETAILED I'VE EVER SEEN!

(Dino) We try to be detailed and give you up to the date news. www.fearfactory.com We may be a few days behind, but it's only a few days.

(MUEN) WE LIKE THE WEDDING PICTURES!

(Dino) Hah!! Oh!? You liked that? There were other pictures we wanted to put on, but we would have had to add a clause saying you had to be at least 18 yrs. old to get into the site! (MUEN) FINALLY, WE HEARD THAT YOU WERE WORKING ON A FILM?

(Dino) (laughing) Well see, that's what I was talking about... we can't put it on the website. Honestly, I don't want to mention that right now because I'm trying to clean all that up...
