MT #8 | The Gift of Death! | Mike Ploog |
Summary:
A fine tale from the Masters!
We pick up from last issue with F.A. Schist bearing down on our fave muck-monster with a bayou-boat. Man-Thing's right hand is human again. Schist and Wickham escape before a spectacular explosion lights the sky. Man-Thing recovers and wanders into the two other men who drove him from the sanctuary last issue. They are now under orders to accept him back and the lady who first doused him with the healing water brings him back inside as Schist looks on. He secretly enters the commune area, expecting some great city but that is not the case. He still sees an opportunity for profit.
Man-Thing is taken before the Fathers, those who were among the first to imbibe the waters centuries ago. They strap the uncaring Man-thing on a table and begin to examine him and return him to humanity. Schist arrives and lays out his plan to sell the waters of life. Man-Thing, partially humanized, attacks the hard emotions that Schist carries. Wickham falls to his death while fleeing. Man-Thing is stopped from killing Schist by the Fathers, who decide to bestow upon Schist the waters of life. He drinks deep, then is told the terrible truth: the waters are not for consumption, but bathing. The fathers were the first to discover this when their bodies were hideously transformed by the waters. This now happens to Schist who goes mad with rage and attacks the Man-Thing. He trashes the lab area, dumping the collected muck that was the Man-Thing back upon him, which restores him to his old muckable self. His essence restored, Man-Thing burns away the deformed, mad body of Schist, who above all fears the Man-Thing!
The Fathers decide it is for the best to keep him as he was. Mindless once again, the Man-Thing returns to the swamp.
