Amidala was perched in her throne room chair, as Sio Bibble and the rest of the throne room council questioned what to do about the situation. Suddenly Chancellor Valorum sent a transmission.
"Good evening, Queen Amidala," he said wisely.
"How much longer are you going to take?" Amidala said. "Every day that you delay, you take food out of the mouths of the starving children of Naboo."
"I am sorry, your Highness," Valorum responded, and Amidala noticed that he looked a little pale.
"Never mind," Amidala dismissed him. She glanced over at her handmaiden, and friend, Laché. Laché had been chosen as a handmaiden to protect Amidala and keep her from harm. Amidala smiled at her, then dismissed Bibble and the rest of the counil, and retired to her chamber, where she chatted with the handmaidens until morning, where she went to her window and gazed out on the city of Naboo, Theed.
From space, Naboo looks like a sparkling emerald, Amidala thought. I love my people. But am I choosing the right way to protect it?.......
~*~*~*~
The next day, Amidala was rudely awakened by a sharp knock on her door. Panaka was shown in, and he made an announcment.
"Naboo has been invaded by the Trade Federation. Nute Gunray is here to see you."
Amidala wrinkled her nose. Neimoidians weren't her favorite species, mostly because they were very unatractive. But even a Neimoidian wouldn't call Nute handsome, she thought.
She quickly got dressed in Padmé's handmaiden outfit, for she knew the time had come, and Sabé slipped into an impressive black cloak with feathers.
"I brought you here for a purpose, Queen Amidala," Nute said to Sabé.
"I was not brought," Sabé said frostily. "This is my throne room. I do not recognize your authority, Nute Gunray."
Score one for Sabé, Padmé thought as she tried to hide the smile that slipped up her cheeks.

Neme watched the proceedings from her place. She wasn't dressed as a handmaiden, but as a diplomatic aide. She would hopefully escape the Neimoidians' notice if there was any trouble. She kept her eyes fixed on Sabe while she mentally searched for signs of the ambassadors who were to come. They were obviously not on this planet. But where were they? She looked at the Handmaiden and Padawan, Rabe, to see if she had sensed anything.
~*~*~*~
MAJESTY AMIDALA
Rabé was tense as she awaited the arrival of the ambassadors. She, along with Handmaiden Neme, was dressed in the garb of a diplomatic aide, to hide her identity from Neimoidians. She was concentrating hard, trying to sense if the ambassadors were anywhere near. Then she felt it; a faint pulse and a flash in her mind. The ambassadors were on the planet, but not very near.
She turned to Neme and said, "They are coming, but not soon. In a few hours, perhaps."
Rabé didn't want to stand around and wait all day, so she asked Neme what she thought they should do.
~*~*~*~
HANDMAIDEN RABE1
Lache watched Nute Gunray steadily, the top half of her face hidden by a crimson red cloak. Though she wasn't fond of the Trade Federation, Lache always found Neimoidians interesting. As a protocol handmaiden, she had taken it upon herself to learn about all sorts of cultures. Since she figured the Federation would be part of her relations, she studied the Neimoidian civilization. Though she hated to admit it to herself, Lache almost felt pity for them- Neimoidians were raised as grubs in community hives and fed limited amounts of food. The strong ate more food than they needed and the weak died. Being raised this way caused Neimoidians to be greedy cowards- they were afraid of death.
The longer Nute spoke, however, the more Lache's pity faded. She tried not to let her face twist in disgust. She swallowed, anxious to leave the throne room.

Amidala frowned, her face hidden by her handmaiden outfit. Sabé was talking to Nute Gunray, and Amidala sneaked a smile at Laché, and sensed that Laché was anxious to leave. Just then, Sabé signaled that Nute had asked them to leave into the camps. Amidala trudged along with Laché, her heart falling deeper with every step.

As Neme and Rabe walked, they lagged behind a little. Neme touched Rabe's hand, and leaned close.
"I sense something. Strong. Very strong. It's as if someone's trying to shield themselves from the forc trained. No wait, two people. The other one is succeeding more, but their link gives him away." Neme paused in thought. "It's a familiar presence somehow. Jedi."
Neme and Rabe were pushed apart by the guards before Rabe could reply. But she wouldn't have had time to anyway, since at that moment two men swung down from a balcony and started attacking the guards.
Neme recognized the men immediately as Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan. With a grin at at Qui-Gon she whipped out her lightsabre and proceeded to deflect a laser bolt heading towards Amidala.
As she fought she murmured to him "Impeccable sense of timing, as always, Jinn."

Panaka stood in the Queen's personal quarters speaking with her about the attack on Naboo. He reassured her that she was not betraying her planet and people that she was only helping them. Suddenly, there was crash outside the door. It sounded like there was a fight going on inside the ship! I quickly ran to the door, and punched the button opening it....with blaster in hand I walked out the door.

MAJESTY AMIDALA
Rabe's thoughts-
Here we are on her Majesty's ship, awaiting takeoff to who knows where. I felt a tingle in my spine when Captain Panaka mentioned me being trained as a Jedi. Could this really be happening? Me, a Jedi Handmaiden! Of course I would need a Master.
...What luck! Neme, a fellow handmaiden, was mentioned as a possible trainer for me. Hmm...from the look on her face she seems to be considering it.
Imagine it! Me, humble handmaiden Rabé, learning the way of the force! Neme and I could go on missions, or stay right here as Theed's resident protectors...Just the thought of being a Jedi makes me so excited.
Wait a minute, Neme seems to have made up her mind....She begins to speak as the ship takes off....

As they felt the surge of excitement from Rabe Qui-Gon and Neme almost laughed.
"Well, you two seem to have quite a connection already." Qui-Gon said. "It's obvious to anyone who has the least force sense. I think you've found your padawan."
"And this from someone who tortured poor Obi-Wan for months before formally accepting him." Neme replied. She beckoned Rabe over.
"Yes, Neme?" Rabe said, not sure what to say after that. Neme looked at her and tried to think of a way to pose the question when she heard a loud crash and subsequent noises. And then to make matters worse, Panaka at that moment came barreling into the room.

JEDI PADME
Padmé glanced up at Pananka in surprise. "Yes?" she said, and waited for a response.

Ship's log entry- Captain Panaka
0800: I ran out of the room blaster in hand, only to find some surprised handmaidens staring at me. The sound must have been coming from the next room. I ran over and found that the access panel had blown up. I rammed my shoulder into the door, and heard crys of shocked from the handmaidens behind me in the corridor....

Neme saw that Panaka was trying to open the door. She took out her lightsaber and quickly slashed the locking mechanism so that the doors could be easily pulled open. She didn't feel a disturbence, but decided to keep at the ready anyway. She stood back with lightsaber drawn as Panaka opened the doors.

At hearing her Queen speak, Rabé no longer felt afraid or uncertain. She was told to go to her ship, and that she would do. Rabé summonred all her strength and followed Neme to the ship. Still, Rabé could not help wondering; where are we going? Why? Who started all this commotion?
If only she could know...

Jadis ran to the ship ducking low for cover. She looked around for the Queen. She could not see her. Almost panicing she turned to look for her

Neme and Rabe got to the ship. But as they were about to get in they noticed Jadis looking wildly around. After surveying the area Neme figured out why, the Queen was nowhere to be found! Neme gestured to Rabe and Qui-Gon and they ran over to Jadis...

Amidala disguised as Padmé, ran onto the ship. "I am here, Neme! Let's go!"
~*~*~
PADAWAN JAZ
Jadis seeing that the queen was safe breathed a sigh of relief. She hurried aboard. ( are we on seperate ships or all on one?) She braced herself as they took off. She had never really like space travel and now they had to somehow get past the blockade. She started to hum the 'Ballesk Warriors song' unconciously.
~*~*~

Amidala stroked Jadis' hand. "Dom't worry, we are fine. Just be--"
She was cut off by a jerk as the ship suddenly lost power, flickered, then returned. Sabé, disguised as the queen, shouted, "What's going on?"
Qui-Gon reappeared. "There is a power shortage. One of the droids saved our lives when one of the Trade Federation's ships blasted part of the ship. We'll have to touch down on Tatooine to get repairs."
"How long will that take?" Sabé demanded.
"Enough time for you to get to the Senate, my queen." the wise Jedi answered.
~*~*~
PADAWAN JAZ
A stop over at Tatooine. Hmm Jadis remembered her family stopping there once. She had to dance at the palace of a horrible creature called... Jabba the Hutt. needless to say her memories of Tatooine were not very fond. "I hope I don't have to leave the ship.' She thought. Out loud she whispered. 'I hope we don't get stranded there.'
~*~*~
Jadis watched the baleful yellow form of Tatooine come in to view. There was no way she was going to leave this ship. Not if Jabba was still ruling here. The thought of him sent shudders through her body. She had danced for him with her mothers and her sisters. The way he had looked at her made her feel sick and imagine her dismay when she found out her parents were considering selling her to Jabba. It had taken a lot of talking to stop them. In the end they had to sneak away so that Jabba would not know. Tqatooine held no pleasant memories for her.
~*~*~
LADYPALPATINE
Neme noticed that Jadis seemed to be growing more and more uneasy as they got closer to Tatooine.
"Qui-Gon, I don't believe we should take most of the handmaidens outside of the ship. It is true that they have been trained in self defense, but they're used to Naboo, and political problems. Not the cutthroat nature of Tatooine's Hutts."
"You don't need to protect Jadis, Neme." Qui-Gon said kindly. "She will have to face her fears herself. But nevertheless, I agree with you about not taking a large group out. A small group will be much better for our intentions."
"Thank you, Qui-Gon. May I assume I am to be one of the members of the group?" Neme asked.
"Of course, how else could I keep an eye on you to make sure you don't get in trouble?" Qui-Gon replied with a laugh.

Amidala, disguised as Padmé, walked over to Jadis and patted her hand. "Don't worry," she said. "You don't have to go if you don't want to. Nemé and Qui-Gon have it all figured out."

"Thank you Padme, This planet hold too many bad memories for me. BUt I will follow should the Queen need me." She smiled weakly. The ship finally landed at the outskirts of one of the 3 main spaceports on Tatooine.
Panaka entered. "Qui-gon is leaving soon. He is taking the gungun and the little astromech. Are you going with him Neme? Anyone else."
Padme turned to Jadis. You've been there. Help me dress like a narive."
Jadis grabbed her hand and they hurried to the end of the ship. Moments later Padme was dressed in drab blue and grey. "hmm here try this"
Jadis handed Padme a sash with a chep looking bauble on it. "Now turn around whilst I do your hair." It felt strange to be giving orders to the queen. She had a small taste of what it must be like for Sabe at the moment. Her nimble fingers quickly braided and looped Padme/Amidala's Silky hair.
"A few in a bun and just wrap there two around her and there you are. That is about as close as someone like you can get to fitting in at Mos Espa. You'll still turn heads."
A troubled look came over her face. "Be very careful. Tatooine is a dangerous place. We need you to return. Be especially wary of Jabba." She blinked back the tears in her eyes and embrace Padme. "Good Luck!"
~*~*~
LADYPALPATINE
Neme, Jar Jar and Qui-Gon were already walking toward Mos Espa when Padme and Panaka came running up. Neme raised her eyebrow at the queen's appearance, but didn't let her surprise show to Qui-Gon.
Jinn and Panaka bickered a little about the presence of the 'handmaiden' and it was decided that Padme's presence would be tolerated. As Qui-Gon led their little group through the dunes, Neme fell back to talk with Padme.
"So you managed to find some way to come along afterall. I assume Sabe is still in full queen mode back on the ship." she said a little questioningly.
"I know that as a queen I shouldn't risk myself, but I had the strangest feeling that I must come along. That something important was going to happen." Padme shrugged. "Plus I couldn't let Master Jinn go deciding our fate without a little input. Although this isn't my planet, I still must watch out for the needs of my people."
Neme touched Padme's hand, "You are a good queen, my lady." she whispered.
As they reached the outskirts of Mos Espa Qui-Gon spoke up, "We must all be very cautious. Take care not to let even the slightest hint drop of who we really are."
"We understand." Neme shot Padme a small grin. ::what that man doesn't know:: she thought.

PADAWAN JAZ
Jadis watched the small group of travellers dissapear into the distance. The queen would be safe with Qui-Gon and Neme. Besides, It was not likely that they would go anywhere near Jabba's Palace. Yane summoned her. "There is an incomming message from Sio Bibble. The Queen wants us all there." Jadis followed yane down the walkway to the shipboard throneroom.
The trade Federation have cut off food supplies to Naboo. The people are starving. It was heart wrenching to watch Sio Bibbles face. Though I have only lived on Naboo for a short time. It has always felt like home. These people are now my family.
"Oh please hurry." Jadis thought silently. The sooner they get back with what we need, the sooner we can leave. We need to get back while there is still something of Naboo left.
As the day wore on Jadis almost began to wish she had gone with te others. It was too late to catch up now. There was not much for a handmaiden to do shipboard.
~*~*~
Jadis remebered an old mediation trick her grandmothe had taught her. Usually Jadis did not have much to do with the force but this might just work.
She focused on Amidala. Reaching out with her mind.... connecting! Her vision started to clear. She was inside a tatooine junk shop and a small blue creature was flying infront of Qui Gon talking to him. It worked! She was now seeing things through Amidala's eyes. It was a bit strange not being able to hear but she could lip read and at least she could see what was going on.
Jadis through Padme's eyes:
Qui-gon and the blue creature.. hmm she had seen one before on one of her many trips. it was a... Toydarian! That's it. They went out the back of the shop. Padme's attention turned to the small boy sitting on the counter cleaning some gear. He seemed to be talking very seriously with her. Jadis could see his admiration of Padme in his eyes.
~*~*~
LADYPALPATINE
Neme stood quietly next to Qui-Gon as he attempted to 'convince' the stubborn Toydarian. It wasn't working, but there wasn't anything she could do to help him. Besides, she was more intrigued with the slave boy, Anakin. He was strong in the force. Stronger than anyone she had ever met. Beside the waves the child was sending out, Qui-Gon's mind felt like an untrained child's. But it was also strange. Being around Anakin made her head throb. And if it hadn't been for her proximity to the stronger Jedi and his shields, she would have been on the ground sobbing by now.
Qui-Gon concluded his negotiations with Watto. Before they followed him back into the shop, Qui-Gon pulled her aside.
"Neme, you feel the force waves the boy is giving off." It was a statement, not a question.
"Yes, he's almost too strong for my shields. He will definately overwhelm Rabe." she paused, "I am right in assuming he will be coming with us?"
Qui-Gon wore a haunted look as he watched the horizon. "Yes, young knight, you are right. I can see our futures very much intertwined with his. I just don't know how yet."

PADAWAN JAZ
"Jadis....Jadis.." Her concentration was broken. It was Eirtae. She turned to her, looking slighly dazed.
"Y-yes, What is it?"
"Obi-wan, the young Jedi says a sand storm is brewing, I am worried about Padme and the others."
~*~*~
PADAWAN JAZ
Jadis walked to the engine room where Obi-Wan was fiddleing with the hyperdrive engine. He greeted her and returned to work. Jadis sat silently as she watched him. She hardly knew the jedi, yet in some strange way she was attracted to him. She had tried to rationalise it to herself. Telling herself it was just because he was iderent to her brothers and father. But it wasn't that. She tried to think of something to say.
"Um have you heard from the others?"
"Yes" he replied, putting down the hydrospaner and facing her. "I spoke to Qui-Gonn amoment ago. They are having trouble getting the parts we need. and this storm is slowing them down also."
"Will they be able to get back before nightfall?" Jadis asked, worried.
"Actually, they are staying at the house of a small boy they met at one of the shops."

Neme sat silently at the table, listening to the conversation silently. ::This boy makes me so uncomfortable:: Neme thought. But she also knew that she didn't dislike him. In fact she felt admiration for his strength. ::He will make a great Jedi, if allowed.:: but an uncertainty creeped into her thoughts.

Padmé glanced at the protocol droid in front of her.
"His name is C-3PO," the boy called Anakin boasted to her.
"He's wonderful," she said.
"Hello, I am C-3PO, human cyborg relations. How might I have the pleasure of serving you?" the droid requested.
R2, who had followed them into Anakin's room, had began to whistle and chirp tauntingly.
"What do you mean, naked? My parts are showing? Goodness gracious, how embarassing!" the droid exclaimed.

As she ate breakfast, Neme couldn't decide who was more worried this morning. Padme, who was staring morosely at her food and idly sculpting with it, or Shmi who hovered over her son and the visitors like a solicitous fog.
Neme wasn't actually worried, but she understood the motherly concern. She wished she could comfort Shmi, but somehow she didn't think that her 'hunch' would be enough.
::But it should have been enough for Padme:: she thought, shooting a glare at her Queen and friend. She had every confidence that Anakin would win this race. And she knew Qui-Gon intended to free the slave boy one way or another.
:I just hope he'll do it 'legally' this time.:: She sighed, knowing that when it came to rules, the older Jedi tended to ignore them and follow his heart.

After they ate breakfast, Padmé, Anakin, Kitster, and Shmi stayed behind to hook up the parts of the pod to the eopies while Qui-Gon and Nemé headed towards the stadium to make one final bet with Watto.
As soon as the quartet arrived, Watto walked off, muttering in Huttese about Qui-Gon betting too much. "What was that all about?" Anakin asked Qui-Gon.
"You'll find out soon enough," the Jedi replied.
Padmé glared angrily. Why couldn't he just tell Annie now? He was only nine! She shook her head angrily as they entered the stadium.

Jadis finished braiding her hair as she walked down the ramp to Obi-wan's side. he turned sensing her and smiled. She smiled back shyly.
"The race should be staring soon."
She nodded. Obi had told them all last night about the pod race and how Qui Gon had bet with the junk dealer to get the parts they needed. Captain Panaka had nearly bust a blood vessal but most of the handmaidens had confidence in the Jedi's descision. And if Anakin Was the boy she had met so long ago then he could do it for them.
For about the hundredth time she wished she had gone with them to Mos Espa. But in a way she was also glad Jabba the hutt would most certainly go to the pod races. "I wonder when we will know what has happened?" Jasmine thought to herself.
Obi-Wan startled her by answering, "It should all be over in about two hours." he laughed at her shocked expression. "Your mind is open and innocent. Your thoughts are easy to hear. Sorry if i starled you." He smiled engagingly.
Jadis could not help but smile back even though it made her a bit uncomfortable to know he could see into her mind so easily.
"Would you like me to show you how to block people out of you mind?" It would be something to occupy his time and he didn't mind an excuse to spend a little more time with this handmaiden.
~*~*~
LADYPALPATINE
Neme stood tensely at Qui-Gon's side as the race started. She was confused. Qui-Gon could have easily helped Anakin along with his own force powers. And as she tentatively reached out with her mind, she found a shield around their little group.
::Qui-Gon, surely there is something...::
::Neme, the Hutts have their own Force Sensitives. We don't know how much attention they've paid to young Anakin, but we certainly do not want them detecting us.::
::I understand::
::Besides, I am quite confident that the boy can make it. He will make it.::
In that last thought Neme detected something. Qui-Gon almost seemed to be trying to convince himself. She wasn't used to the master showing any signs of uncertainty. This she would have to think about more.
::Yes, Neme, I am worried, but not about the race. Anakin will be fine.:: he put a comforting hand on her arm and they both focused back on the race.

Padmé watched anxiously as Annie rounded the bend and started the second lap. Jar Jar was behind her chanting, "Careful, Annie. CAREFUL, ANNIE!" She wanted to smack the Gungan in the face, or at least tell him to shut up, but she didn't move a muscle, she was too worried about Anakin and concentrating on what to do at the Senate.

Jadis smiled a greeting at Mia and turned back to hear Obi-Wan's reply.
He checked his chrono. "Not too much longer now. I can't seem to connect with Qui-gon. he has put a up a barrier. I think there may be danger around."
He noticed the look of apprehension on Jasmine's face and placed a comforting hand on her arm. "Don't worry young handmaiden, We will defend you..uh..all."

Befor Obi-Wan could answer Mia, his comm unit beeped. He moved away from thet two girls to talk.
Jasmine turned to Mia, "Hot isn't it? Nothing like Alderaan, or even Corescant for that matter."
Obi-wan turned to them with an almost excited look on his face. "He did it, the boy did it, He won the podrace and now we will have the parts to continue to Coruscant. we have to start gettig things ready for when Qui-Gonn gets here. Jadis, could you help me with the hyperdrive and Mia, woud you please tell the others?" They hurried off. secretly Jadis thought that most people would be glad when they left Tatooine.

handmaiden rabe1
Lache wondered aimlessly around the ship, too tired to do anything but too bored to just lie around. She found a seat by a window and stared out at the barren land of Tatooine. Hot and uncomfortable in her flame-colored handmaiden attire, she wished there was someone her age to talk or relate to. She had only seen Jadis recently, and Jadis was a few years older than she was.
Lache hoped the race was over soon- sitting on Tatooine was not exactly her idea of a good time.
Coruscant, on the other hand, was where she had lived until she was seven. Lache loved the city- she loved to explore and test her knowledge of foriegn languages. There was always something interesting to do, or even better, someone interesting to meet...

Neme didn't realize she had been holding her breath until she let it out in a sigh. ::He won. He won! I can't believe it!:: She turned to Padme to find her looking slightly ill.
"Padme, are you alright?" she asked concerned.
"He's still alive." the answer didn't seem to be directed to her, "He won. We're not trapped on this planet anymore." It suddenly seemed to sink in and Padme turned and hugged Neme, "We can continue our journey to Coruscant now!"
"Yes," Neme answered, sharing her queen's joy, partly.
"What is it?" Padme asked as she saw the hesitation on her Handmaiden's face.
Neme looked over at Shmi. She was a strong woman, but how would she deal with loosing her son? Anakin would certainly be coming with them now.

Jadis and Obi-Wan were back in the engine room when they heard a shout. "They're here!"
Jadis rushed to the ramp with Obi-Wab close behind. Qui-gon, Neme and Padme/Amidala were all riding Eopies and there were antigrav sleds carrying the parts needed. Everyone rushed to unload them.
Qui gon ordered Obi wan to start on the hyperdrive, he had some busines to attend to. Obi-wan questioned him, but Qui Gon just answered that he would not be long.
Obi-wan studied him for a moment then sighed. "Why do I sense we have picked up another pathetic lifeform?"
"It is the boy who won the parts for us, the one who you did the midi-chlorian count on."
Obi-Wan just looked at him as Qui-Gon walked off. Jadis watched as the Jedi moved into the horison, then returedn tot eh engine room to help Obi-Wan with the Hyperdrive.
They wasted no time in getting the hyperdrive in and working. Jadis assisted Obi-Wan while the others worked on the other parts that needed to be replaced.
