Having Sum Fun with Sum 41

While most 19-and-20-year-olds are driving around in their parents' souped-up Honda Civics with the windows rolled down and "The Real Slim Shady" blaring from their car stereos, the boys of Sum 41 are sitting in the recording studio watching the popular daytime soap opera, Passions.

With their first major record label release just around the corner, you'd expect the guys to be sitting at home watching lame soap operas. But they've also they've already begun working on their sophomore album, which won't be out until sometime next year. "The main thing right now is the EP that's coming out June 13," says singer/guitarist Deryck Whibley. "We've already recorded that. That's what we're going to be working on for the next year or so. 'Half Hour of Power' is what you'll be hearing for the next while. What we're doing here won't be anything for a while. This comes out in, like, 2001."

"Right now we're recording our next album," adds Steve Jocz, the drummer and youngest member of the band. "We're just recording this stuff now so that we don't have to stop touring. We're getting it out of the way."

Deryck and Steve, along with bassist Cone McCaslin and guitarist Dave Baksh are not new to the touring life. Having already toured with the likes of gob, Ten Foot Pole, Down By Law and gracing last year's local stage at the Vans Warped Tour, these guys are ready for anything. In a few weeks they'll be moving to L.A. to play with bands like Fenix TX. They'll be coming back to Toronto to play Vans Warped and Summersault, so these Ajax boys have a busy summer ahead of them. Be sure to check them out any chance you get because soon it'll be their album playing out of those souped-up Civics.
