The cattle mutilation mystery is one of the most incomprehensible mysteries whose properties remain unknown till our day. Since 1960s, animals all over the world have been found lying dead in fields with their bodies mutilated, but with no tracks or signs of struggle indicating who or what might be responsible. The marks found on the animals are not consistent with attacks by predators such as wolves or coyotes and despite horrific mutilations, there was no blood on the ground.
Typical cattle mutilations have involved huge oval incisions around the jaw bone. In most cases the exposed jaw has been completely removed and the tongue cut out with a precise incision deep in the throat. In addition, at least one eyeball has been removed, as has the udder in cows. The sexual organs on both sexes have also invariably been removed. All removals and incisions have been performed with care and precision. In some cases the evidence of cauterization along the incision lines has led investigators to believe that some form of intensely hot cutting device has been used, strongly suggesting a laser. Bones have also been cut cleanly with no bone fragments around the cut. It has also been found that the animals have been totally drained off blood.
Naturally farmers have lost their stock to predators for centuries, but the peculiar characteristics of these slaughters had never been seen before. Most predators go for the throat, or sometimes the hindquarters, while chasing a running prey. They do not kill for sport but to eat, and in most cases little except the head and the odd bone is left after their meal. Many of the carcasses of the mutilated animals were found intact. The usual predators and scavengers seem to have left them alone. Normally a crow, for instance, will peck out the eyes of a dead lamb before starting to tear flesh from the body, but no such damage was evident in these corpses. Even maggots were absent. The blowflies that feed on rotting carcasses and lay the eggs which develop into maggots - hundreds of thousands of them per carcass, which continue to feed on the flesh while they develop - were avoiding the mutilated animals. All this flies in the face of nature and suggests that some other, unknown, factor is at work. Most astonishing of all was the precision used to mutilate the animals and the absence of blood. A predator rips with its jaws or claws, leaving blood and entrails scattered over at least a small area around the kill.
If predators were not responsible, then who is responsible for those absurd mutilations? In several instances, silent, black helicopters have often been seen circling over areas where mutilations have occured in a sinister echo of the vultures that normally fly over carrion. These helicopters have been sighted in greatest numbers in the infamous Area 51, near Groom Lake in Nevada. Here, it is rumoured, the United States government is testing and flying recovered alien craft. The black helicopters, so the story runs, are actually extraterrestrial craft (hence the lack of engine noise) disguised as earthly choppers in order to allay the fears of the public. There is also a slightly less hysterical claim that the helicopters are made in the USA, but use reverse-engineered technology from crashed alien craft. A report which originated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, dated February 2, 1979, lends credence to the possibility that the phantom helicopters are involved in the animal mutilation mystery to some degree:
For the past seven or eight years mysterious cattle mutilations have been occuring throughout the United State of New Mexico. Officer Gabe Valdez, New Mexico State Police, has been handling investigations of these mutilations within New Mexico. Information furnished to this office by Officer Valdez indicates that the animals are being shot with some type of paralyzing drug and the blood is being drawn from the animals after an injection of an anti-coagulant. It appears that in some instances the cattle's legs have been broken and helicopters without any identifying numbers have reportedly been seen in the vicinity of the mutilations. Officer Valdez theorizes that clamps are being placed on the cow's legs and they are being lifted by helicopter to some remote area where the mutilations are taking place and then the animal is returned to its original pasture... Officer Valdez is very adamant in his opinion that these mutilations are the work of the US Government and that it is some clandestine operation either by the CIA or the Department of Energy and in all probability is connected with some type of research into biological warfare.
Is the CIA operating an undercover germ-warfare experiment which involves the use of unmarked helicopters to carry out testing on privately owned herds of cattle? Although this theory is entirely possible, it suffers from one crucial flaw. If the CIA is conducting such experiments, why does it do so on open farmland where there is a better than average chance of being shot at by an irate farmer? It would be much simpler for the CIA to carry out its research in the surroundings of a secure governmental facility. Those responsible for the mutilations appear entirely oblivious to the outrage that their actions provoke.
Linda Moulton Howe, an Emmy Award-winning television producer, carried a research into animal mutilations. Her book An Alien Harvest published in 1989, documents her investigations into cattle mutilations, phantom helicopters and UFOs. Howe has spoken to ranchers and farmers who reported mutilations, veterinary experts who have examined carcasses and police officers charged with investigating the phenomenon. Some of her findings seem to point towards some sort of government involvement. One theory runs that some animals were exposed to - indeed deliberately used to test - biochemical weapons by government forces. Ms Howe's other findings also claim government involvement with UFOs. Therefore she came to the conclusion that the cattle mutilations, phantom helicopters and UFOs are inextricably linked. She cites a number of cases where apparent extraterrestrials have been seen in the immediate vicinty of mutilation sites. She suggests the possibility that the aliens may derive some form of sustenance from the removed body parts of the unfortunate cattle.
If extraterrestrials are responsible for these grisly attacks then what role is played by the unidentified helicopters? A number of researchers have mused on this puzzle, including Tom Adams, a long-time student of the scenario to explain the helicopter link:'...The helicopters are of military origin. The government of the United States possesses a very substantial amount of knowledge about the mutilators, their means, motives and investigators and the populace as a whole that perhaps the military might be behind the mutilations, a diversion away from the real truth.'
There has been no evidence till now of human mutilations, although many who undergo the most dramatic abduction experiences tell of physical pain followed by vomiting as well as psychological trauma. Is this lack of mutilation simply a matter of differentiation - that as a higher species we are not subjected to it, perhaps because, whether we realise it or not, we can communicate with aliens? Or is it, as some allege, that the world's governments have done a deal with extraterrestrials and are tacitly allowing animal mutilations to take place as part of whatever technological exchange has been worked out - a deal whereby animals may be mutilated and killed as long as humans are only abducted and returned alive?
