Similarities That Run Rampant Between
"The Labyrinth" and "Forbidden Games"
By: Findabhiar Aery

The movie, "The Labyrinth" was made in 1986, "Forbidden Games", a few years later. Coincidence? I thought not. I have a few theories on this, of course. First, Jim Henson and LJS, are one and the same person. Seemed unlikely, but hey, it's all good. My second theory would be, that LJS actually wrote "The Labyrinth" or likewise that Jim Henson wrote "Forbidden Games". Or it could even be some evil government conspiracy trying to make this otherwise boring little world believe in another more interesting world running alongside our own in an effort to give people hope, and a drive towards seeing that world. Just for the hell of it, of course.
Why would I think this? The similarities are amazing between this trilogy of books, and this movie. Should we do a head count and check? Okay then:

1. Innocent young girls featured (Sarah, Jenny Thornton)

2. Evil, image concious mothers, fathers that are nano characters (Sarah and her tiff with Step mommy, Jenny's mom's seeming lack of indifference)

3. Both are targetted by the passions of older men which would seem slightly pedophilish if it wasn't so damn cool (Jareth, Julian)

4. The similaritie between these two men's names (I am not the only one who sees it. Julian, Jareth. They sound the same, and how many J names are there really?)

5. Both girls forced to play cruel games that are, survey says, "Not Fair!" -taken from Sarah's numerous exclaimations during the beginning, and middle, and well, end of the movie

6. Both tricked into lovely fantasies involving the men (Jenny and the Zach episode in "The Hunter", Jareth's lovely peach and bubbles)

7. The girls both manage to have matured by the end, the situation was a well, good situation.

There are more little instances, but I decided not to bore you more than I have already managed to achieve.

Rashels bit

Most fans of Lisa Jane Smith are familiar with the 80’s film Labyrinth. It stars David Bowie who last year released a song called "Thursdays Child". Although this song was featured in the charts, you probably won’t remember it. This is an essay comparing the Lisa Jane Smith trilogy "The Forbidden Game" with the film "Labyrinth".

The forbidden game trilogy is centred around Jenny Thornton and her demon lover, Julian. The labyrinth features Jareth who is in love with a mortal girl Sarah. The main similarities are Julian and Jareth are in love with the mortal girls Jenny and Sarah, and they force Jenny and Sarah to play a "game" for their freedom (or in Sarah’s case her brother Toby’s freedom). The forbidden game focuses more on Julian’s obsession with Jenny, but the Labyrinth’s Jareth’s love for Sarah fades more into the background. Here is a table I created of the more distant similarities and differences…

The Forbidden Game
