THE SPY: LEAVING THE SCENE OF THE CRIME

The Spy were formed in 1996 by Barbi and Bill. Bass player Pixie was added eight months later and D. the drummer joined about a year ago. If they were from England they'd have been instant stars of the "New Wave Of New Wave" scene but they're from Toronto and are content to be interviewed byour ever-intrepid Doc Pickles at the Butler's Pantry....

What's the best food to eat while listening to The Spy?
Bill: Spicy spicy meatballs.
Barbi: Mr. Christie's Crispy Chewy chocolate chip cookies because they're crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside.

What's the lamest question anybody's every asked The Spy?
Bill: What's the best food to eat while listening to The Spy.
Barbi: Somebody asked me what my favourite colour was. That's pretty stupid. Unless it was Teen Beat. Somebody once asked me if I was a lesbian.

What did you say?
Barbi: Yeah, I am. You can print that.

That's the way to stomp out homophobia. You gotta keep 'em guessing.
Barbi: What a stupid question.

Favourite Bugs Bunny cartoon?
Bill: The one with Bugs and the gangsters. Or any Bugs Bunny/Tasmanian Devil cartoon is hilarious..."I'm feelin' mighty low."
Barbi: The one with the big red furry monster that looks like a hairy tooth and Bugs does that barber shop routine on him.

Would you be offended if somebody called you glam?
Barbi: Yeah. Because when they think "glam", it's used to describe '80s big hair metal bands. Glam is a way of life. I like the '70s glam, that was the real glam. We're not bandwagon jumpers, I've been wearing glam clothes ever since I've been in high school. I find glam can be very materialistic sometimes. I like good music, it doesn't matter what kind of music it is. It's all about the music and how it makes you feel. If you feel like dressing up to go to a show, that's cool, if you don't, that's cool too. It's all about escapism. It's like going to your mother's closet and trying on all her clothes to go to the public swimming pool down the street.

I saw The Filth and the Fury (the Sex Pistols documentary) last night.
Barbi: I want to see that movie, because somebody told me that Lemmy was in it. He used to be their roadie. He was Jimi Hendrix's roadie for a while too. Jimi was the one who told him that one day there are going to be women playing guitars and they're going to be playing heavy rock.

What's new at Twisted Superfreak Times?
Barbi: I interviewed Nashville Pussy last night in shorthand for Twisted. They opened for Motorhead last night.

Any local plugs aside from Spacecraft 7?
Bill: The Exploders.
Barbi: Billie Jean. That's my sister. She's an R&B singer/songwriter who's going to be featured in the new Michie Mee record coming soon.

Okay, last question. If somebody was running into traffic and I was riding past on my way to interview you and I stopped to help and waited until the police and ambulance came, and one of the officers told me to wait for a minute to ask me what happened, then left the police car with lights flashing, then got into the ambulance and drove off with the person who had been running around in and out of traffic, and didn't return after 45 minutes, even though the police officer told me it would only be a minute, but the police car was still there with the lights flashing, and the deadline for Wavelength was tomorrow, and I was late for our interview, should I leave the police scene to ride my bike down the street to tell you I'm going to be late?
Barbi: Yeah.
Bob (the dishmonkey and lead guitarist for Peterborough's Dr. Fantastic and the Hecatomb Skull): You should take the paddywagon and get there faster.
