The Camera Is A Ray
Jennifer Pearce
To enter the installation one must cross the "limin," or threshold in Latin. The state of liminality redefines
the "I" and the unconscious "eye" of the camera. It lies "betwixt and between" and is neither here nor there. The
liminal zone is a transitional geography, between allegiances and identities, spirit and matter. The video in the
installation consists of footage shot during research in Cuba on spirit possession, ritual and ceremony. Ritual
does its work through participation, only then is it efficacious.
LOST | Graffiti In The City Of Angels
Raymundo Tonatiuh Reynoso
LOST is a documentary exhibition that captures a few moments of graffiti in Los Angeles through photography,
video, found objects, and paint on various surfaces. Graffiti is an artform that arises from its environment,
often in adverse conditions, and gives life to the alienating concrete we call Los Angeles.
LOST works of art captured on film and in memory, lost identity being reclaimed through markings on urban
surfaces, lost while trying to get to this gallery, and lost lives are among the themes explored with this
installation.
SubCycle Drum
Christian Bannister
SubCycle Drum proposes to accelerate and alter the composition process by providing a system that allows
for the networking of sound fragments and drum beats, intelligently organizing them and offering the musician
a physical interface or real-time compositing tool. In doing so, the timeline commonly used in the composition
process will be subverted and the very nature of the recording changed from a static to a dynamic form. Each
performance will draw from an evolving knowledgebase of sound fragments and alter it by depositing new material.
It is possible to create a recording which is an open system and could continue to evolve in different directions
simultaneously by introducing new chemistry into old performances.
SublimeConcrete
Dmitry Kmelnitsky
SublimeConcrete is an interactive media installation tht explores urban spaces, which hinge on or evoke
the sublime. The work unfolds via a kind of psycho-geography visualized by the stages/improvised dance
performances occurring within LA's peripheral and in-between spaces. The "genius loci" of the sites is
expressed through sound, movement, light and poetry. The notion of exploration within SublimeConcrete
is furthered through participants' interaction with the visual elements of the project. The computer/participant
interaction is realized through a physical interface in the form of a network of illuminated transparent
plastic tubes that represent a kind of umbilical connection to the space of the imaginary, the space of
the screen, and the space of the urban environment.
Self Adjust
Kalim Chan
Self Adjust explores the concept of ever-changing identity made possible by technological innovation. The
machines born of new technologies at first facilitate the tasks for which they were intended, then gradually
evolve to generate variations of our very own identity. as these machines become reconfigured and improved
to suit our needs over time. As a raw technology first emerges, it is endowed with basic functionalities
that accomplish specific goals. When the parameters are altered to recontextualize the existence of the
system, the user of the technology is placed at the threshold of a different identity. These systems recombine,
making improvements in their performances to adapt to new tasks. The issue of our identity is further multiplied
and complicated.
