On Tuesday, January 7, 2003, a Norwegian criminal court cleared Jon Johansen of all charges relating to DeCSS. At the request of the Motion Picture Association of America, the Norwegian
Economic Crime Unit (ØKOKRIM) charged Johansen with violating the Norwegian Criminal Code section 145(2) for his part in helping to write and publish the DeCSS DVD descrambling program
which he used to watch his own DVDs. The three-member Oslo City Court unanimously ruled to acquit Johansen.
On a similar note, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted their temporary stay against Matthew Pavlovich, which prevented him from publishing the DeCSS DVD-descrambling program on the Internet.
The ruling effectively upholds the November 22, 2002, decision by California's Supreme Court. In it, the court ruled that Pavlovich will not have to defend "a trade secret lawsuit simply
because he knew that his publication could cause 'general effects' on the motion picture and technology industries in California."

On Tuesday, President Bush unveiled his $674 billion tax cut/economic stimulus plan. And just like the last one, it favors the wealthy. Vice President Dick Cheney, who is expected to
promote the proposal in a speech to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Friday, would have saved over $100,000 in 2001 under the plan, according to a Reuters report.
