As if those Internet banner ads weren't annoying enough, those at the
Internet Advertising Bureau have decided to make them even bigger.
We can now look forward to the pleasure of having even bigger advertisements staring us in the
face as we surf the net.
These changes arose from advertiser concerns that not enough of us are clicking on those banner
ads, thinking that web surfers must not be able to see them. Therefore, they have decided (in our
best interest) to make them even bigger to get our attention.
They've also discovered that users who are exposed to larger ads are three times more likely
to remember a brand.
Two new types of ads which advertisers will be using are "skyscraper" ads which will run up
alongside your screen and rectangular pop-up ads which will continually pop up all across your
screen. The latter method is very similar to those annoying pop-up ads which porn site operators
have employed. Every time you close a window, a new one (or two or three) pops up in its place.
At a time when advertisers are spending less and web site operators are seeing a drop in
revenues due to a drop in ad spending, could this also be a ploy for them to get users to pay for
ad-less content? Seems like a good way to drive up their revenue, by constantly bombarding their
visitors with annoying ads.
Not only will these ads be bigger, but they'll also take longer to load as well, thus making
our web surfing just a little bit more frustrating.
Hey, here's a thought... maybe people are not clicking on those ads because they don't like
them. Nah, that couldn't be it. What do we know.
