When StarLink corn was discovered last year in our food supply, it spawned a nationwide recall of food products. During the process, developer Aventis CropScience tried to get the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to allow small amounts in our food to avoid further recalls. Fortunately for consumers, the EPA have finally decided not to allow the genetically altered corn in our food, noting that they were unable to establish a safe amount of which can be consumed.

Representatives from both the EFF and the U.S. Attorney's office met yesterday to discuss the release of Dmitry Sklyarov. Despite productive talks, the U.S. Attorney's office did not agree to immediately drop the charges and release Dmitry. Since the talks failed to produce the desired actions, protests for Monday, 30 July have been scheduled across the U.S.

For those in the Los Angeles area, a meeting to discuss Monday's rally has been scheduled for Saturday, 28 July at 3:00 P.M. on the Santa Monica Promenade (3rd Street and Santa Monica Blvd). The rally will take place Monday, 30 July at 12:00 P.M. (Noon) in front of Senator Feinstein's LA Office at 11111 Santa Monica Blvd., Suite 915, Los Angeles, CA 90025, 310-914-7300. Senator Feinstein has been an outspoken supporter of the DMCA. For a list of other cities planning a rally in support of Sklyarov, visit freesklyarov.org.

In response to pressure from its own employees, customers, programmers, and protesters and after a Monday meeting with the EFF, Adobe have decided to drop all charges filed against Dmitry Sklyarov, who was arrested and charged with violating a provision of the DMCA. Colleen Pouliot, Adobe senior vice president and general counsel, said in a statement that "the prosecution of this individual in this particular case is not conducive to the best interests of any of the parties involved or the industry." With it, Adobe are urging the federal government to release Sklyarov. However, the battle to get Sklyarov released is not over as he will remain in jail until U.S. Attorney for Northern California Robert S. Mueller decides to drop all charges.

After a long day and night of intense talks between government officials in Bonn, Germany, 178 countries agreed to sign onto the Kyoto Protocol, the global climate treaty, even without the support of the U.S. Although the deal was watered down from the original agreed four years ago, it is a very important start. Now all that remains is for countries to ratify the treaty and take action on climate change. Who are the key countries responsible for polluting out planet?

Police attacks on journalists in Genoa over the weekend were so brutally severe that similar reports are starting to filter out from the more mainstream media outlets such as the BBC and the Guardian. One resident was even quoted as saying "I feel very sad. The anarchists got what they wanted. But I also saw, from my window, 30 policemen beat a group of only four people. I was expecting something like this would happen."

Blood stained wall and floor Reports started coming in late Saturday night of brutal attacks on journalists who are covering the G8 meetings in Genoa, Italy. According to reports, Italian police stormed a school that was housing the journalists and then they started beating and arresting them. Meanwhile, accross the street police were beating people inside an activist organization center, including many who were found sleeping. According to reports and medics on the scene, the beatings lasted over 45 minutes, resulting in approximately 20 seriously injured people.

Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the town of Genoa, Italy today to protest the Group of 8 meetings. These 100,000+ people have gathered in the streets to express their dissent against the closed meetings being held by the leaders of the world's most economically powerful countries, who gather once a year to discuss general international policy. So far there has been one confirmed death of a young Genovese man and an unconfirmed report of the death of a woman. According to eyewitness reports, the Genovese man was shot twice in the head by police, then run over by their police vehicle, and finally left for dead. WARNING: The images of the dead protester are highly graphic in nature.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the agency responsible for conserving marine species and managing commercial fisheries has released an Environmental Impact Assessment. In 1998, Greenpeace sued NMFS for its failure to protect the Steller sea lion while managing the commercial groundfish (fish that swim near the ocean bottom) fisheries off Alaska's coasts.

A decision by Judge Zilly in June of 2000 shut down much of the pollock fishery and required NMFS to conduct an environmental assessment on the impacts the groundfish fishery in the North Pacific have on the survival of Steller sea lions and the ocean ecosystem. After much delay, the 500 page assessment was released in January of 2001.

Now, you have an opportunity to submit comments until July 25th to NMFS, telling them they have to take into account the entire ecosystem, not just specific parts! Take Action Now! Comments are due by the end of day July 25th!

Well, it's happened again! The DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) claims another victim by punishing him for expressing his First Amendment rights.

Government officials have been gathering together this week at the Climate Summit in Bonn, Germany to decide on the fate of the Kyoto Protocol. President G.W. Bush recently paid back all his campaign contributors by withdrawing from the treaty. Now Canada and Australia have made it clear that they too will reject the Protocol by not signing onto it. With support for the treaty waning, its passage looks unlikely. The only hope for climate justice lies in the hands of activists.

Last month President G.W. Bush personally promised to work with Third World countries "to reduce greenhouse emissions and maintain economic growth." But now he's undermining the attempts of these Third World countries to develop renewable sources of energy and fight global warming. President Bush is planning to cut U.S. aid to these countries which would have helped them combat climate change. The U.S.'s determination to destroy an international agreement on cutting pollution (Kyoto Treaty) is despicable.

A wave of attention and criticism has been accumulating around the issue of trade. Now another type of trade, that of children trafficked into the military and prostitution has also begun to raise questions within the mainstream consciousness. Slavery, a supposed relic of the past, still exists in many forms all over the world. Here's an investigative report from Nepal concerning the buying and selling of young girls into the bonds of sexual slavery.

While re-organizing my room, we happened across an unfamiliar roll of film. To our surprise it was the long forgotten about second set of pictures of the Polecats' gig at the Bowl-a-rama on Saturday, July 29, 2000.

We've said it before and we'll say it again: President G.W. Bush is an idiot! Bush has often criticized a global nuclear test ban treaty. He has repeatedly opposed the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), claiming that it's useless and "fatally flawed." Now he hopes that the treaty will die in the Senate.
