WHITE NIOSE were a unique band of the late 60s, their style of music is futuristic electronic-psych comparable to THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA lp, as to music you've heard on Sci-Fi B movies,....... led by the multi-talented team of DAVID VORHAUS, and DELIA DERBYSHIRE,.......also on the 1st lp ;BRIAN HODGSON also contributed quite a bit to the 1st lp, Percussion was by PAUL LYTTON, Vocals; JOHN WHITMAN, ANNIE BIRD, and VAL SHAW ... the music of this lp 'AN ELECTRIC STORM IN HELL' showed that this band were way way ahead of most bands of the late 60s, on side 1 you'll find 5 unique electronic pop-psych songs each very different from the next, and side 2 has 2 compositions of which has been said contained some of the most way out and frightening music ever committed to vinyl........ .............onto the reviews 1 'LOVE WITHOUT SOUND'
(Derbyshire/Vorhaus).......experimental pop-psych led by synths with spiral vocal echoes, synth trails onto an electro-pop soundscape........JOHN WHITMAN sings with background vocals sung by a female, could it be DELIA ?........once u begin to play this lp your instantly transported into a world very different from the one your in and into a soundscape of unique sound and flashing colours.......' ( love without sound, love without sound, love without sound........).......BEYOND THE OUTSIDE WORLD SWING LEFT TO RIGHT WITHIN OURSELVES, A SOUND SCORE THE NIGHT, JUST GUARD BY BLUE REALITY,.......... WITHIN MY SOUL..........DREAM FREE.............NOW MAKING LOVE WITHOUT SOUND, WITHOUT SOUND, WITHOUT SOUND ( echoes )........IT NEVER HAPPENED WIDE LIKE THAT BEFORE'.......
2 'MY GAME OF LOVING'
(Duncan/Vorhaus)......... male/female vocals, ANNIE BIRD sings this song, more experimental than the first a bit darker too, synths dominate with spare percussion, intense drumming........' WHEN I SMILE OR TOUCH YOUR HAND DO U NOT THINK I LOVE U, I'M JUST PLAYING ( girl comes into the song speaking french )..............MY GAME OF LOVING DIDN' T HURT BEFORE.........later in the song intense male and female vocals make orgasmic sounds while some nut cracks a whip, song ends with smashing drums, and a snore....Note; THE UNITED STATES oF AMERICA were led by JOSEPH BYRD, not sure if he was realted to ANNIE BIRD or not.......
3 ' HERE COME THE FLEAS '
(McDonald/Vorhaus).......GREAT song !........the pace lightens up a bit by the 3rd number which is true camp in every sense of the word complete with electronic springs and loopy vocals from DELIA ( is that right ? ) Co-Written with John Renn-Mc-Donald........this song owes a bit to the old vaudeville song style too.......' HERE COME THE FLEAS, THEY'RE AT YOUR KNEES, SO MOVE OVER PLEASE I DON' T WANT U AROUND ME, DIRT IN THE FLOOR FOR 6 WEEKS OR MORE U SAY IT's A BORE TO KEEP THIS DUNGHOLE TIDY.......( the singer ends the song with the words 'and i'll give u a kiss', sounding like MARIYLN MONROE for a few seconds :) )
4 'FIREBIRD'
(Derbyshire/Vorhaus ).......very very RELAXING song with 3-D vocal echoes, one of the lps best numbers John Whitman sings and Lisa Pollack supplies backing vocals.....Lisa begins 'la, la, la, la' )Whitman sings 'BY THE STORM BLOWN DOWN CHEAT A BROKEN WING, WHEN I TOOK HER HOME SHE STAYED, MILK AND HONEY FED IN A FEATHERED BED, SHE GOT WELL MY LOVE FLEW AWAY, FIREBIRD FLY HIGH, HIGH FREE, I CAN' T HOLD U DOWN YOUR TOO WILD FOR ME.........' :)
5 'YOUR HIDDEN DREAMS'
(McDonald/Vorhaus).......dark pop, very subdued, moody and low key yet spellbound.......lovely female vocals here with some GREAT lyrics.......' TRY HOLDING THIS , THEY'RE IN YOUR HAND, AND YOU'LL BEGIN TO UNDERSTAND HOW LIFE CAN LEAVE U LIKE A RAINBOW, SEE THE FOOLS UP ON THE STAIR, AN IRON HAND A SMILE BEWARE, YOUR HEART SAYS YES, BUT SOMETHING IN YOUR BRAIN GOES'.....................( later )............' IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND BE ENGROSSED IN STRANGE SCENES, WHY........( another female singer comes in and sings) YOUR HIDDEN DREAMS CANNOT BE DENIED'...............this song drifts into the next song........ -
DELIA DERBYSHIRE of WHITE NOISE
- side 2 - 6 ' VISITATIONS '
(McDonald/Vorhaus).......on our cd copy # 5 drifts into this number rather than stopping and starting again, it's about a trip a guy takes to see his girlfriend on his motorcycle, which ends in a fatal accident,........this song could be the lp focal point as it is more experimental than any of the songs that came before in fact it is a very dark trip, a musical journey into the unknown, with multiple sound effects, layered keyboard effects, screams, shrieks and other nioses going on forever............begins with whispering, synths then elevate while the girls sing 'ICY, ICY, ICY', now disembodied vocals surrounded by synths zooming, carnival sounds come into play, at 1 minute 30 seconds the singer begins, but it's hard to fully comprehend his vocals with all the sounds around him.......'SHE's WAITING ALONE IN THE DARK.......'........later echoes, pounding, a girl cries, lights come into violins, car motor, flourescent light drives by.........' I TRIED TO SPEAK, I WOULD NOT, I TRIED TO TALK TO U BUT U WOULDN' T LISTEN..................................................I SEE U WAITING FOR ME'...........the girl cries, ' PLEASE DON' T GO, PLEASE DON' T GO, MONSIEUR', the guy says 'I TRIED TO SPEAK AND COULDN' T AND NOW WE MEET LIKE ( ? ) LOVERS'.......ends with crying...........and at this point the listener is in complete awe.........
7 ' THE BLACK MASS; EN ELECTRICAL STORM IN HELL'
(White Noise).........similiar to 'VISITATIONS '.........begins with chanting..........'HIGH JUDGE RESIDING ON THE LAND SOMEWHERE'.............after a minute trash can drums pound away, begins a pattern with sound effects, before the 3 minute mark a piercing scream can be heard and screams thru the middle of this song, while feedback travels thru the pores, lots of beautiful noise generated thru the screams, thus ends the lp.........Georgina Duncan wrote the beginning lyrics, this song was the last one composed for the lp and was inspired by PINK FLOYD's ' SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS '.......

DAVID VORHAUS was the main composer of WHITE NOISE, an american he was a draft dodger who moved to the u.k. , his father had been a movie producer who was blacklisted......IN '74 he released 'WHITE NOISE 2' the 2nd lp of electronic experimentation, we've been told it's a GOOD one to get, he would continue in the 90s and release 2 more lps under the groups name, and in 2000, another lp, DELIA released lps over the years as well
from a compilation cd called 'Spirit of Christmas' a track called "Peace On Earth" by WHITE NOISE is avalable, it is a gentle and melodic track by Dave Vorhaus and Jude Allen with lyrics and vocal performance by Alquimia.......

delia passed away on july 3rd 2001......on this link here u can read 2 GREAT interviews with her and her work in the field of electronic music, there are some music clips too which are also available thru 70s invasion downloads 2 section, Delia was the one who composed the theme for DOCTOR WHO.......
