Test Your "9-Q":

#1 - The Pilot Episode

Okay, here are the answers to the questions. Scoring is broken down into the following: 2 points are awarded for each multi-choice question answered right and 1 point is awarded for each "This, That And The Other Thing" question answered right. If you got all the "This, That And The Other Thing" questions right (7 points for the set), add an extra 3 points as a perfect-score bonus. You earned it! Out of a maximum of 30 points, check the bottom of the answer page to see where you rank!

ONE

So, in November 2001 you picked up Microsoft's first video game system, the Xbox. How much do you remember about the launch titles for the system? Okay, which of the following Xbox titles was NOT available at the systems lauch?

[B] - Blinx : The Time Sweeper
: Micorsoft's and Artoons time traveling feline didn't debut on the system until 2002, which was after the console's launch. Microsoft probably wants to go back in time and still imagine that this game would be a success.

TWO

Hey, remember the Super Game Boy accessory released in 1994 that would allow you to play Game Boy games on your Super NES through sticking the Game Boy cartridge in a bulky SNES cartridge? Sure you do. You might also remember that certain Game Boy games would have certain "enhancements" made specifically for the Super Game Boy, such as a broader color pallate and a special border. So, what was the first Super Game Boy Enhanced title?

[C] - Donkey Kong
: The remake of Donkey Kong for the Game Boy in 1994 was also the first game to be "Super Game Boy Enhanced". Of course, having 8 other shades of blue is hardly and "enhancement".

THREE

Here's another question about a video game launch. This time we're talking about the launch of the Nintendo 64. Two, count them TWO games were lauched with the system on September 29, 1996. What were they?

[B] - Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64
: These were your only choices for gaming entertainment on the day of the N64's launch. And if you were too late, Pilotwings 64 was your only choice, seeing that Super Mario 64 sold like proverbial "hotcakes".

FOUR

The first Gran Turismo hit the PlayStation console in 1998, and pretty much changed the face of racing games as we know it. Back then, it didn't have as robust of a car lineup as the current GT3 and the upcoming GT4 do. Which of the following auto manufacturers is NOT in the original Gran Turismo?

[C] - Ford
: The first Gran Turismo was pretty devoid of car makers from the United States and Europe. Ford cars didn't appear until Gran Turismo 2.

FIVE

Which "next generation" console of the mid-late 90's was the first to have an analog stick on their controller?

[D] - Nintendo 64
: That I know of, the Nintendo 64 was the first "next gen" console of the mid-90's to include an analog stick on the controller. Sony and Sega didn't include analog sticks on their controllers over a year after the N64's release.

THIS, THAT AND THE OTHER THING

Time for a little break. This question may seem similar to the Dis Or Dat™ questions of the You Don't Know Jack series, except I changed the name. Clever, huh? Anyway, you'll have two answers to choose from for seven things below. Just decide which is which, okay?

Seeing how this is about "firsts", this question begs the question "First Person or Third Person?". If you think the game is mostly in first-person view, answer with [A]. If the game is in a third-person view most of the time, answer with [B]. Got it?

[A] FIRST PERSON . . . . . . . [B] THIRD PERSON

[1] - GoldenEye 007 ... [A] FIRST PERSON
[2] - 007 : Everything Or Nothing ... [B] THIRD PERSON
[3] - Syphon Filter ... [B] THIRD PERSON
[4] - Medal Of Honor Frontline ... [A] FIRST PERSON
[5] - Metroid Prime ... [A] FIRST PERSON
[6] - PN 03 ... [B] THIRD PERSON
[7] - Dead To Rights ... [B] THIRD PERSON

SIX

The Sega Dreamcast is probably one of the most underappreciated video game consoles of all time. It had a great set of games and it was the first to truly include online support and play. Speaking of online play, which was the first Dreamcast title to support ACTUAL online multiplayer gameplay?

[B] - Chu-Chu Rocket!
: If you wanted to play against other people online on the Dreamcast, your system had to be infested with mice. CCR was the first DC game to feature online multiplayer.

SEVEN

Here comes a pretty obscure question. Put on your thinking caps for this one. What is the difference in YEARS between the first 3-D Metroid title (Metroid Prime) and the first Metroid title produced? And I'm going off the year displayed on the title screen of the game.

[B] - 16 years
: Simple subtraction tells you that 2002-1986 = 16. Unless you failed 3rd grade math. To that, I say "for shame".

EIGHT

The first F-Zero appeared as a launch title to the Super NES in 1991. While a great, fast and fun racing game, the game had a flaw within it's time trial. For some reason, you could't race on all tracks of the game in the time trial. Which of the following courses could you NOT race on in the time trial?

[C] - Red Canyon I
: Sadly, you couldn't play EITHER Red Canyon courses in the Time Trial (Practice Mode) of the original F-Zero.

NINE

Here's a pretty easy one for you, provided you're familliar with the series. Which Mega Man game (in the series) introduced us to the robot dog Rush?

[B] - Mega Man 3
: Rush made his debut in Mega Man 3. If you didn't know that, then you're also probably wondering why you can't slide in Mega Man 2.

TEN

Okay, last question. This one involves the first issue of Nintendo Power magazine. What month and year did the first issue of Nintendo Power roll out? Even though it was bi-monthly at the time, I'm looking for the debut month (which would be the first month on the issue).

[B] - July 1988
: The first issue of Nintendo Power dropped in July 1988 with a crappy claymation Mario on the cover with the color of his clothes being ass-backwards. Oh, and you get a FREE POSTER too! And 16 years of bias!

Scoring

Ok, let's see how you did!

30 - Excellent! : Either you know your games or you're a cheating bastard. Or both.

23-29 - Good! : You know quite a bit about your games. You must also have a pretty pale complexion.

17-22 - Fair! : You take the good, you take the bad and something, something, something.... TOOTIE!

10-16 - Not Good! : Either you're 12 or a casual gamer, anyway you slice it, this ain't good!

0-9 - Oh My God! : Where did we go wrong? Is it those friends you hang out with? Give me their phone number, I would like to talk to their mothers! Why are you shutting me out of your life? Why? WHYYYYYYYY?!! (End Scene).
