The swedish black metal band Algaion was formed in the early autumn of 1993 by Mathias Kamijo. He and I (Mårten Björkman) had then been playing together for several years in the band Abemal. Mathias felt that the music he was making did not fit in that ba nd so he formed this ne band. In October 1993 a demo was recorded containing the tracks ”On the Reach of Zaphonia” and ”...And With Darkness I Pierce Him”. The demo was released originally in thirty copies of which one fell into the hands of Jon of Fullmo on Productions. Later in the spring of 1994 we recorded a compilationtrack for a comp.tape released by Natfursth of Sorhin, the comp.tape was called Drap and the track we contributed with was Kratos that we recorded and included on our first CD.
The summer of 1994 I spent in Florida with Jon of Fullmoon. We worked out a deal for the full-lenght of Algaion that was going to be released later in 1994 by Fullmoon Productions. The recordin then became subject to numerous delays so we did not actually get to record before November 1994.
We recorded the CD in the studio called Abyss and run by the vocalist and Lead guitarist of Hyprocrisy - Peter Tägtgren. We were the second band to record in that studio, the debut CD of the Hypocrisy side-project The Abyss was recorded a there a week ear lier. To help us with the recording, which is hard if you’re a two-man band and one of them (i.e. me) is a complete nitwit when it comes to playing instruments. Fredrik Söderlund of Octinomos prgrammed the keyboards and the drums for us. Mathias’ girlfrie nd at that time joined us to do some backing vocals and Nattfursth of Sorhin, who was with us all the time in the studio, filled in a backing vocalist on one of the tracks.
In august 1994 I and Henry Möller went to Norway to stay with Emperor for a couple of days. On our way there we stopped and took some photos of the chruchruins outside of Oslo - Frogn Kirke that was burnt only a short while before we got there. On that location the anti-satanism division of the Oslo police had 24hour recon that spotted us so when we got home, a week later the Oslo-police interrogated us about that fire. It even got up as a full-page article in the norwegian newspaper Aftenposten. We did not give them the pictures (of course). One of them is now adorning the CD-print on the Absurd(ger) CD.
In the winter of 1994 I formed a recordlabel that was supposed to release the full-lenght of Octinomos - ”On the Demiurge” (still available from FMP), we also planned that that label should release an Algaion 7” later in the spring of 1995.
On April 22 1995 we entered the Abyss studio again, this time with Peter Tägtgren as our drummer. We recorded four tracks instead of only two as we first planned to.
Shortly after that I was arrested for another fire and held in jail for long enough to make the releasing of Algaion material on my label merely fantasies. After I got out on parole we for a while stood without contract for releasing the songs we had reco rded in April.
We went to Fullmoon Productions again and the release on that label was almost ascertained when the german giant label Nuclear Blast contacted Peter and said that they were interested in releasing the four tracks as mini-CD. In the latest second, in Sept ember 1995, they got cold feet about releasing Black Metal, which they apparently found worth no support. The label that came to release our MCD was...
...the merged two italian labels AvantGarde and Wounded Love. The MCD is now out and available from AvantGarde
The inbreeding between Algaion and Hyocrisy has now got even worse than Peter joining our band. Mathias is now a full member of The Abyss and has been touring with Hypocrisy in the Spring of 1996 and is going out to tour with them in the United States in the summer of 1996.
