Whimsical Flower Header

SUPPLIES REQUIRED:
PSP 7
Eye Candy 4000
You can download leaves and stem tubes HERE
You can download the Star burst 4 preset shape HERE
(Unzip it to your psp preset shapes folder)
**********************************

1. Open up a new image
Size: 600x600 (give yourself plenty of room to work)
white background.

2. Add another new Raster Layer, Name it flower.
Go to your tool bar now and click on: Preset shapes tool. preset shape icon

3. In the drop down menu on your Tool Options Palette, choose preset shape - Star burst 4 (attached)
Antialias checked.
Line width 1
*Line style makes no difference here.*

4. Set your color pallete now:
Brush stroke #FFCB819 (orange)
Fill color #FFFFC0 (yellow)
and check Lock.
Your color palette should look like this now.

color palette

TIP: If you choose other colors to use, REMEMBER
make your darker color, your brush stroke and your complimentary lighter color, your fill.

5. Now go to your canvas, and draw a sun burst in the middle of your page.

6. Go up to the top of your screen and click on Effects.
Go to your plug-ins and choose Eye Candy 4000 > Swirl
Using these settings, click OK.

Wow..... Nice effect isn't it?

7. Go to your tool bar once again, and this time, click on flood fill. flood fill icon
In your flood fill tool options, under BLEND MODE, choose color.
Under Match mode, choose RGB Value, And... Make your tolerance 200 and opacity 100

blend mode settings

Now, flood fill once again with the darker color (brush stroke) that you originally used for your flower.
(This will change the hue somewhat, BUT will make your flower, less transparent, yet still keeping the dark and light tones)
If your flower is now too dark or too light for your taste, Go up to COLORS, and choose ADUST > BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST.
Play with the settings until you get the shading you desire.

8. Resize your flower head now to the size you wish it to be.
To do that, go up to IMAGE > RESIZE and under "PERCENTAGE OF ORIGINAL", put in the percentage that you want.
I used 65%, BUT my original flower was huge. REMEMBER THOUGH, the smaller you make your flower, the more detail you will lose.
TIP: Make sure the option, resize all layers, is NOT checked.
Then click OK.

9 At this point, we will want to enhance the detail of the petals in our flower now, so... go up to EFFECTS > SHARPEN > UNSHARPEN MASK.
(Using this option, instead of just sharpen, gives us more control to gain the look we want without distorting the graphic)
I used these settings: But again, play with them to get the look that's right for you.

You have completed the head of your flower now. At this point we want to begin to build a stem.
I have included an empty stem, completed stems and leaves that I have made from vectors for you to use, OR... you can choose to draw your own if you are feeling daring.
(Since that is a completely different tutorial however, it will not be included in this lesson today) or of course, you can use collected tubes of your choosing as well.

10. Add a new raster layer once again and name it stem.
Open up the stem and leaf tubes I have provided, and copy and paste them as you desire, to the new layer we just made.
(Each as new layers, if you are going to build your own, using the empty stem and adding leaves to it, so that you can reposition them if you want)
IF YOU ARE USING THE WHOLE STEM TUBE I HAVE PROVIDED, THEN STEP 11 IS NOT NECESSARY FOR YOU TO DO... GO DIRECTLY TO STEP 12.

11. (OPTIONAL IF NEEDED) Once you've gotten the shape and look you want... Make your background layer, and your flower layer invisible,
by going to your layer palette and clicking on the picture of the glasses for those layers. Doing this will give you a small red X there, indicating that you have that layer shut off.
Make one of your leaf layers active by clicking on it, go to your layers option at the top of your screen, and choose merge visible.
Now reactivate your flower and background layers by going back to your layer palette once again, and clicking on the red X's, this will bring back your flower and back, so that you can see them again.

12 Making sure that your stem layer is active, position it, rotate and resize it to your liking,
THEN, go to your layer pallete and drag your stem layer, BELOW your flower layer.
Readjust again with your moving tool if need.
Now, you should have a beautiful flower, that looks like this.

13. Last step, is to go once again to your layer pallete, and delete your background layer now.
This should leave your flower with a transparent back.
Go up to layers, and click on MERGE > MERGE VISIBLE, then save your flower in tub or PSP format so that you can use it again and again.
