♦ He was taught by his mother in Crowheart's one-room schoolhouse till the 4th grade.
♦ Attended Wind River high school. He played football, basketball, and he ran hurdles, sprinted, and did long jump.
♦ Attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts in 1984. He spend a year taking college prep courses there.

♦ He earned a football scholarship to Columbia University. Matthew was the wide-reciever for the team. He graduated in 1989 with a degree in economics.
→ He helped break the football teams losing streak.
→ While studying at Columbia he worked nights loading flowers in New York's wholesale district.
→ While still a student he began modeling, persuaded by a girlfriend's mother, who was an agent.
→ In 1987 the summer before his junior year, he stayed in Manhattan to work as a waiter. "I was living the bohemian life - my version, anyway." -- Matthew Fox
→ "I still thought I was going to interview for jobs on Wall Street, and then all of a sudden it just hit me that that was all wrong for me. So I decided to give (acting) a shot, take some classes, see what happened." -- Matthew Fox
♦ Fox studied acting for two years at David Mamet's Altantic Theater Company in New York City.
