So many times I've been asked, "Why do
authors write under a pseudonym?" The answer is usually fairly simple.
Generally they write different sub-genres under a different name.
Sometimes a very popular author wants to expand their writing into a new
sub-genre and isn't sure how the fans will accept the foray and will use a
nom de plume. Sometimes they use a different publisher for this sub-genre
and are required to choose a new pen name. Of course an author may not
have cared for their "real" name. Also, the author may have been a male
writer and forced to use a nom de plume by the publisher. Romances are
geared for women and if you were a romance reader back in the early days
of romance, would you have purchased a book by Tom Huff? It's doubtful,
and why he used Jennifer Wilde as a pseudonym. Lastly, early romance
authors had to give the rights to their name to the publisher and if they
changed publishers had to choose a new pen name.
