The Shroud of Turin is believed to be the burial cloth of Christ, by many people. It is a a 14 foot long cloth religious relic that is stored in Turin, Italy, in a cathedral. There appears to be on the cloth an image of a man who has been crucified. On April 11, 1997, there was a fire in the Cathedral holding the Shroud of Turin, the Shroud was miraculously saved because of the bravery of a Turin fireman who rescued it from the building. This is the second time the shroud has escaped a fire. On December 4, 1532, it was slightly damaged by a fire in the Sainte Chapelle cathedral in Chambery, France. An interesting coincidence is that both of these shroud fires occurred at the time of bright comets. The biblical quote in the book of Mark that describes Jesus being wrapped in the shroud after the crucifixion, Mark 15:46 (King James Version):
"And he brought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchor which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchor."
First we will consider the issue of the Shroud's authenticity: is it the burial cloth of Jesus Christ, or is it a forgery? There were many forgeries of religious objects in the Middle Ages, at the time the Shroud appeared with a French Knight, Geoffrey de Charney. But the Shroud may have been the Mandylion, an early Christian religious relic that was said to have Christ's face on a cloth. Supporting the claim that the Shroud is authentic is the fact that Geoffrey de Charney was a Knight who was the model for chivalry and would never have been involved with a forgery. It seemed to be clear that the Shroud was a fake in 1988, when the results of carbon tests on the Shroud were released, that indicated a date of 1325. However, it is now considered possible that those tests were innaccurate because (1) microbes on the cloth may have made the testing inaccurate (2) The 1532 fire resulted in carbon deposits on the cloth, which affected the carbon tests. So, that is how the issue stands today, there is no decisive evidence either way, but the pendulum is swinging again in the direction of increasing evidnce that the Shroud may truly be the burial cloth of Christ. The image of the Shroud is on the surface, as if the body wrapped in it dematerialized into radiation leaving the image. And examination of the Shroud indicates wounds and bleeding consistent with being produced by crucifixion.
At the time the the Shroud appeared in 1349, the people in Europe had been going through the Black Plague, which had significantly reduced the population of Europe. It was as if the Shroud appeared then during the darkest of times for humanity.
Let us now consider the previous fire on December 4, 1532. A fire in the cathedral in Chambery, France, melted the box holding the shroud, and it was slightly damaged by dripping molten silver dropping on the cloth. The significant event at that time in religious history was the Protestant Reformation, with Martin Luther's movement beginning the Protestant Church, and the Church of England splitting off from the Catholic Church. So, it is interesting that at the time of this fire, there was the greatest "fire" or schism in the history of Christianity. And that was shortly after the October 1529 defeat at Vienna Austria, of a Moslem army attempting to invade Europe. At that time, there were 3 comets in three years. in 1531, 1532, and 1533. The 1532 comet was dimming, but still visible, at the time of the 1532 Shroud fire. The three 1531-1533 comets may symbolize the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The second Shroud fire occurred on April 11, 1997, just before midnight in the Cathedral in Turin, Italy. A fireman smashed through thick bulletproof glass to save the Shroud, at a time when there was falling debris from the fire; the rescue of the Shroud truly was a miracle. On the same night as the Shroud fire, in the same cathedral,there had been an event attended by the United Nations Secretary-General. This coincidence may imply that symbolically this fire relates to the world becoming united.
And it is interesting that at that time Comet Hale-Bopp was near its time of peak brightness (April 1, 1997).
And in the previous year, in March, 1996, there had been another bright comet, Comet Hyakutake. So, this brings up the obvious question, will there be a third bright comet in 2022- 2025, since there were three bright comets in three years at the time of the previous shroud fire? And will there now be an upheaval in religion, of the magnitude of the Protestant Reformation?
The Bible's last chapter, Revelation,can give us some insight into this issue. Revelation describes a series of catastrophic events during a future time period, including earthquakes, weather changes, plagues,the rise to power of a world leader referred to as the Antichrist, and a great war-- Armageddon. At the the battle of Armageddon, Christ returns, to lead the world into a thousand year Millenium of Peace on Earth. Some people believe the events of Revelation are occurring now, since it is approximately 2000 years since the birth of Christ. I would suggest referring now to my section on Comet Hale-Bopp on the main page of this web site. There I discuss the discovery of Comet Hale-Bopp simultaneously in two states on the same day, in Arizona and New Mexico. I explain how Arizona (with Astrology sign Aquarius, and Sedonna, Arizona being this country's New Age center) represents the New Age movement, while New Mexico represents Christianity. These are the white and blue tails of Comet Hale-Bopp, with the white tail representing the New Age Movement, which believes the world is now entering a New Age, and the blue tail representing Christian millenial beliefs, since millions of Christians believe we are now seeing signs that Christ will soon return. Also, the borders between New Mexico, Arizona, and the neighboring states of Colorado and Utah form a cross, representing Christ.
So I think the upheaval in religion may relate to these two Millenial movements.
So, it will be interesting to see if we do see another bright comet in the near future, since there were three comets at the time of the previous shroud fire. And if there is a third comet, it could represent the Holy Trinity, or it could represent the Unholy Trinity of Revelation: Satan, the dragon, and his two sons, the Antichrist and the False Prophet, who dominate the world for 7 years before the Battle of Armageddon. And note that there was a bright Comet McNaught in January 2007.
