Every once in a great while (or every year), Buffalo’s La Salle Park is graced with mastermind Kevin Lyman’s Warped Tour (big thanks to Vans for the sponsorship every year too). This year, I was fortunate enough to grab an interview with fellow bass player and veteran punk rocker, Royce Nunley, the man behind the Suicide Machine’s low end. It was noisy; MxPx was playing on one side of us, the wonderful Lake Erie on the other. But above all the noise, this is what happened:

How long have Suicide Machines been together?
Since about 1991
So how many CDs has that been?
Well we’ve had three on Hollywood records, then we have a couple of independent releases that are absolutely impossible to find.
Has there been any line-up changes in the band?
Yeah, our drummer’s only been in the band now for about 2 years now, I’ve been with the band for 6 years, since about ’94 I think.
Was being in a band your original intention in life?
I was going to college; I wanted to teach music. Then I joined these guys and went on tour for the first time, and that kind of changed everything. That’s when I knew this was what I wanted to do.
No band lasts forever. What are your plans for when the band no longer exists?
I don’t know. I might go back to college, it depends, I might do something, I might do another band.
Did you ever think you would make it as big as you are today?
No, I never did.
So how would you summarize life on the Warped Tour?
It’s fun, it’s so easy. You play for 30 minutes a day. Then you walk around and hang out with people, and lots of cool bands and shit. It’s easy, it’s fun, you know, I’ve met a lot of cool people.
What do you think the best part of the Warped Tour is?
I’d say just getting to play in front of a bunch of kids every day.
So what is the worst part then?
Uh, Trying to find a clean place to go to the bathroom (note: by the end of the day, I had to strongly agree with Royce on that one).
So what do you think is the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen done on the Warped Tour?
Dave "The Bullet" Smith is probably the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen here, I mean that’s pretty weird. I never thought they’d have people getting shot out of a cannon.
If there were one thing you could change about the tour, what would it be?
Well, Weezer played the West Coast dates of the tour, and if I could I’d have them play on the whole tour.
What’s your opinion on the food (on the tour)?
The food? It’s a mix. Usually dinner is better than lunch. Some days it’s just awesome. Like today, lunch was great.
How long does it normally take you guys to record a CD?
Not that long, usually a couple of weeks. We like to take our time, we’re not rushing it all.
So have you got any plans for releasing some b-sides?
I’d like to, that would be cool.
Any plans for live tracks being released?
Well we released 3 live tracks when our second record came out, but yeah, I’d love to release just a full live record. We’re just not very good. Playing live, we kind of stink.
*another note: that’s not true. Anyone reading this that hasn’t seen them play live yet, I advise that you see them if you ever get the chance)
What do you have planned for recording?
We aren’t quite sure, but we might go back in and make another record early next year.
So what are your plans for after the Warped Tour?
We’ve got ten days off, then we’re touring for three weeks with Less Than Jake, then we’re going to Japan. We aren’t sure what’s after that.
What’s the weirdest thing about playing in a foreign country?
Language barrier. It’s kind of tough, you know?
So what’s the coolest part then?
Seeing it, definitely. Seeing the world and whatnot, the whole experience.
Have you ever been so impressed by a foreign show that you tried to go back again?
No, not really. Culture shock has never really hit me that hard I guess.
Preference: Playing indoors or outdoors?
Usually indoors, it’s mainly a weather factor. The weather sometimes, it’s just…
If you had to give a rough estimate, how many shows do you think you’ve played?
One thousand. Well, 900, 1,000, somewhere around there.

And now: The Favorites Game
Favorite:
Book: Mankind, Have a Nice Day.
Band: That’s tough, there’s so many that I love. Billy Joe, definitely.
Movie: Boogie Nights, maybe. The Matrix, maybe. Or any of the Indiana Jones movies.
Food: Barbecue…hot and spicy…Cajun, I definitely love Cajun food.
Band on this year’s Warped Tour: Maybe the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. There’s so many fucking great bands that it’s hard to narrow it down to just one, you know? I love ‘em.
