ABOMINANT
10 question interview with Mike May of ABOMINANT. 5/31/01-by Chris Lee
- 1. WHAT IS THE ABOMINANT LINEUP?
- Timmie *Manifesto* Ball - Guitar and falling asleep, Mike *Roadrage* Barnes -vocals and evil crapper (the man has shit all across the midwest!), Buck *NRA* Wiedeman - guitars and 40 oz. of hate, Craig *HOO-RAY!* Netto -drums and ass sweat (makes him wanna go fuck some chicks!), Mike *Baked Potato#1* - bass and fog machine
-
- 2. EXPLAIN THE ABOMINANT SOUND FOR THOSE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU?
- I consider our music death metal but labels get in the way so I guess a more heavy metal influenced death metal, with bits of black metal in there and plenty of thrash and some blast beats. We get bored easy so we mix things up alot. Alot of good headbanging part!
-
- 3. CAN YOU GIVE A FEW WORDS ON HOW THE BAND STARTED?
- We got together as a few members from several local bands who broke up after the death metal *peak* in the early 90s. After it wasn't 'cool' anymore, all the others quit and we're what's left of the ones who don't care if it's fashionable or not. Buck and Timmie cane from EFFIGY, Timmie and I from SARCOMA and Mike Barnes from CATACLYSM. It worked out great as I think ABOMINANT not only shares simularities with all the previous bands, but blow them all out of the water as well.
-
- 4. YOU'RE 2000 RELEASED ALBUM *UNGODLY* IS A DEATH METAL CLASSIC. HOW HAS THE RESPONSE BEEN SO FAR?
- Thanks for the comments Chris. That rules coming from you! Anyway, I guess it has done well, it's in its second pressing, and Evan (of Deathgasm Records) has done a great job of getting it out there. It's pretty much in all the distros (Full Moon, Redstream, Relapse, Necropolis) and even alot of them have gone overseas. We're totally happy with Deathgam's support.
-
- 5. WILL YOU BE RECORDING ANOTHER ALBUM FOR DEATHGASM?
- Right now it looks like we'll do the next one with them but it's not in writing or anything yet. A bit early to say now.
-
- 6. HAVE YOU STARTED SHOPPING TO BIGGER LABELS? YOU GUYS WOULD BE PERFECT FOR METAL BLADE OR CENTURY MEDIA.
- Mike Barnes did pretty much all of the label promo this time out and although it's getting a good response, I don't think anyone wants us on the bigger labels. They are looking for the next CRADLE OF FILTH you know? Someone who sells 10,000 units the first week and that's not us. We don't care. That's not really a goal for us. We all have families and mortgages, so the whole rock 'n' roll fantasy isn't very realistic for us. I mean, the highest you could obtain in death metal as a profession would be like CANNIBAL CORPSE or DEICIDE and that's not alot (NO RETIRMENT PLAN/401K) so were happy just doing it for fun. Some people fish or work on cars or do pottery, we play death metal.
-
- 7. ANY FAN OF INTENSE MUSIC MUST SEE YOU GUYS LIVE. ARE YOU GUYS SPREADING THE WORD OUT OF TOWN ALOT?
- Thanks again for the kind comments. When we play out, we just wanna have fun, you know? ABOMINANT is not the kind of band you stand in back with your arms crossed and watch to be amazed by our killer riffs. In fact, FUCK THOSE PEOPLE! We want you to come up and thrash with us, bang your fucking head and have some beers...have a good time. We'll probably fuck up a song or two and play a bit looser than most bands, but not to say we're shitty musicians, it's just that we don't play metal to impress people. We just want to fucking rage. As for shows, mainly just around the Midwest for now. We really only like to play with bands we like or respect so we turn down alot of gigs with KORN type bands. We're gonna try to do Milwaukee [Milwaukee Metal Fest], but I think it's ludicrous to pay $1000 to play unless you can get rid of tickets, which is hard here, so if we ever do, I guess we'll just have to bite the bullet.
-
- 8. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF 2001?
- We have six songs done for our fifth album, which we hope to record in October/November for a 2002 release. Probably write two or three more and start rehearsing for the studio. Tentative title-*Upon Black Horizons*. A few shows here and there but mainly just writing and drinking ourselves silly.
-
- 9. WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE CURRENT STATE OF METAL IN THE US?
- In general, metal is kind of lame here as there is still alot of 'American Mentality', as even underground fans support alot of bands because others do and it seems cool to like that band. THAT'S BULLSHIT. 90% of black metal, 90% of death metal and otherwise completely suck dogshit. But in the other 10% there still is plenty of great music. Mixing genres helps as you don't get too much of one thing or pigeonhole yourself into burnout. There are still alot of great U.S. bands doing great music. If you don't mind namedropping, here goes-AGOLLOCH, ESTUARY OF CALAMITY, THE CHASM, BLOODCOVEN, SOMNUS, INCANTATION, EPOCH OF UNLIGHT, GARDEN OF SHADOWS, CORONACH, FLESHTIZED, OCTOBER 31, CORPSEVOMIT, SKULLVIEW, LUCIFERS HAMMER, IMMOLATION, ENMORTEM, EVIL INCARNATE, AURORA BOREALIS, VITAL REMAINS, SOULESS, and NILE all kick ass. Then, of course, I'll always worship ABSU, ANGELCORPSE, and GRAND BELIALS KEY as well.
-
- 10. ANY FINAL COMMENTS?
