THE FORCE ‘DEMO CDR’ (DEMO)

Out of the ashes of ROMEO DELITE comes a new Atlanta, USA settled band called THE FORCE. There are sadly only 3 songs on their demo CDR, because after hearing the first tones of opener “Fight for your life” I knew this was going to be something really good and you only want to hear more after these 3 songs. This first song is a fantastic catchy strong uptempo Melodic Rocker with a clear 80s spirit, and a superb memorable chorus, definitely an instant winner for all Melodic Rockfans! The song has some similarities to the 2nd FIFTH ANGEL, yet it features a very nice keyboardsolo, so also an AOR touch can be heard here (kinda like JOSHUA or NIGHTWORK – if anyone remembers that band?). Up next is “Jenny”, another SUPERB catchy song, however this time reminding me of the early 80s perfect US AOR/Radiorocksound (a la PREVIEW, STEEL BREEZE), a truly wonderful tune that could easily become a big hit if is was heavily promoted. This is the kind of Rock we all want to hear the American bands play, and if only more bands would begin playing it, there’s hope again for AOR/Melodic Rock to return. The final track of the demo is the midtempo groovy melodic rocker “All or nothing”, which has some great guitar riffs. I can only conclude that this is a very sensational new band, and I can’t wait to hear a full-length CD in the future, and I am pretty sure here in Europe some labels are eager to sign these guys if they hear the 3 songs of this demo. COWBOY PROSTITUTES ‘OVER THE TOP’ (INDEPENDENT)

2 songs are on the demo of this Swedish band and musically we are listening here to a mix of HANOI ROCKS and MOTLEY CRUE. The band’s lead singer Luca Isabella has a good raw voice, and the 2 presented songs are uptempo Rocker “Over the top” (also very much like late CINDERELLA) and the semi-ballad “Downtown”. This is definitely a quality band, and if you’re into bands like CINDERELLA, QUIREBOYS, HANOI ROCKS etc. then this is interesting to check out at:

SOLAR PROJECT ‘FORCE MAJEURE’ (MUSEA RECORDS)

Only 4 tracks are included on the 6th CD of SOLAR PROJECT, a French band with a female lead singer. But still the CD has a playing length of almost 70 minutes, due to the fact that these are very long songs. The band is playing Progressive Rock, and they do that quite nicely, although nothing sensational happens here. The female singer (Bettina Wirtz) has a very strong German accent (DOROish), but that’s not really annoying. A pity is the Sax, which can be heard sometimes and disturbs the sound a bit, but most of the time what we hear is good Progressive Rock in the style of LA TULIPE NOIRE, QUIDAM, LIKE WENDY, FLAMBOROUGH HEAD, sometimes a bit experimental and not really heavy, but for a Progrockfan a must to hear. Especially the 30-minutes counting “Thunderstorm” (a la MOSTLY AUTUMN) is a challenge for Progrockfans!

KING KARMA ‘KING KARMA’ (Z RECORDS)

KING KARMA is a new band from Alabama, USA and they have released their debut on Z RECORDS. Musically they do something different than most other Hardrock/Metalbands, because KING KARMA is heavily influenced by early 70s British Bluesy Hardrock (read: FREE, BAD COMPANY, MOTT THE HOOPLE, WHITESNAKE etc.). Their CD contains 12 tracks, all very groovy Melodic Hardrock with a strong 70s British bluesy rock approach. I can highly recommend this CD to fans of THUNDER, FREE, LITTLE ANGELS, BAD COMPANY etc. etc. Not all of the included songs are impressive, but as best songs I definitely need to mention songs like “Blue monday”, “Revolution man”, “Mama’s pride”, “I’m listening”, “Midnight sunshine” and “Devil’s road”. The band has a very strong PAUL RODGERS orientated lead singer called Shaun Williamson, and this CD is really a must-have if you dig this kind of Hardrock...

THE RING ‘TALES FROM MIDGARD’
(SCARLET RECORDS)

Of course the bandname is based on TOLKIEN’s ‘Lords of the rings’, but that’s not really important, because we are here to talk about the included music on the debut CD of the Swedish band THE RING. And what else can you expect from a Swedish than a very impressive record, because basically ‘Tales from midgard’ is a very sensational classic Melodic Hardrock/Metal record. THE RING consists of PONTUS NORGREN and Marcus Jidell on guitar, bass and keys and vocalist/drummer/ keyboardplayer Jakob Samuel. 3 skilled musicians whom together have made a fantastic record as THE RING. Musically comparable to classic RAINBOW, DIO, 80s BLACK SABBATH, MALMSTEEN, AXEL RUDI PELL... 10 songs take you on a 60-minutes counting journey, which is a must to hear for the fan of classic 80s Melodic Hardrock/Metal. This is a very strong record, with as highlights “In the beginning”, “Gathering darkness”, “Into the wild”, “Halls of doom” and “Last battle”. Concluded, another must-have Swedish melodic hardrock/metal record!

ELDRITCH ‘PORTRAIT OF THE ABYSS WITHIN’
(LIMB MUSIC/SUBURBAN)

Almost 10 years ago the Italian band ELDRITCH released their debut, and now in 2004 the band makes a comeback with their 4th CD ‘Portrait of the abyss within’ which took them 3 years to complete. Musically it’s one of the band’s strongest releases, because some of the 11 included songs are really impressive. The only negative thing to mention here is that ELDRITCH has a slightly weaker (and rawer) lead singer (Terence Holler), who reminds me of the BONFIRE (!) lead singer Claus Lessman. He is not a bad singer at all, but it’s impossible to rank him next to singers of similar sounding bands (VANDENPLAS, VISION DIVINE, TIME MACHINE). Although the vocals are not always strong and convincing, songs like “Forbidden” (uptempo Melodic Power Metal), “This everlasting mind desease” (midtempo ProgMetal), “Dice rolling” (some modern influences in this midtempo tune, which by the way has a fantastic melodic chorus), “Slow motion “k” us” (fast Power Metal, strong chorus) and “Lonesome existence” (uptempo Melodic Rocker, very good song) are all very sensational songs. The band has dropped most of the modern Metal influences (except in a few songs like (“Drowning”) of their previous 2 releases, and instead of bringing only ProgMetal, they added also some Power Metal influences in almost every song. Maybe the vocals are not as good as a MAGNITUDE 9, VANDENPLAS or THRESHOLD, still some of the songs on this CD will be appreciated by fans of those bands.

RED MOON RISING ‘DEMO 2004’ (DEMO)

The American band RED MOON RISING is formed around singer/guitarist/bassist Mr. Jon Viduya and they sent me a demo, which contains 4 tracks, all a preview of the upcoming full-length CD ‘At the edge of heaven’. Opener “Here comes the night” is a good 80s type of AOR/Melodic Rocker, with a strong chorus, but Jon’s vocals are not that impressive, not convincing enough, although in the chorus the harmonyvocals make that up. Anyway, this first song is definitely the best song, because the other 3 tracks are just ok rockers, but nothing special. More info at:
http://www.redmoonrising.net

TWILIGHT ZONE ‘ONIRICAL INHERITANCE DEMO CD 2003’ (DEMO)

Out of Italy comes TWLIGHT ZONE, a Melodic Metalband who sent me a 6-track demo CDR. The band is playing a bit in the 80s style, even with some NWOBHM influences. The production is not that good, really demo based, but happily the music itself is very nice, with some good guitarplaying and catchy uptempo Melodic Metal pieces like “Onirical inheritance” (a la MAD MAX, STORMWITCH and IRON ANGEL) and “... And the sky wept”. In between there’s also space left for a ballad (“Pale sister”) and with a total playing length of 40 minutes enough listening pleasure for the fan of 80s based Melodic Metal. Some points that should be improved next time are the lead vocals, which sound a bit forced at times, while the sound/production quality also needs to be toughened up. Nevertheless, a good demo from this Italian band, which you can check out at:
http://www.twilightmetal.com

SENTIMENT ‘BREAKING THE CHAINS’ (DEMO CDR)

Back to Finland once again where we can find a band called SENTIMENT. They play typical Euro Melodic Hardrock/Metal in the style of EDGUY, HELLOWEEN and some STRATOVARIUS. Their demo contains 5 well-performed songs, and right from the start you will notice that we are dealing here with a sensational band, because opener “Breaking the chains” is a fantastic strong uptempo Melodic Heavy Rocker like a slightly rawer STRATOVARIUS. The band has a very good lead singer, who actually reminds me of MARK BOALS, and not only the included 5 songs are very impressive, but also the sound/production is as good as a label release. Besides the catchy opener, other highlights are “Long winding road” (fantastic uptempo Melodic Rock with catchy hook and lovely chorus, and a keyboardsolo) and “Mourning light” (superb midtempo Melodic Rocker). This SENTIMENT is a recommended band to fans of EDGUY, STRATOVARIUS..., although Melodic Rockfans will also love this band a lot! This is one of many new Finnish bands that can easily release a label release, and who knows that might happen someday soon, because bands from Finland are very trendy these days. Go check ‘em out at:

NIGHTWISH ‘ONCE’ (NUCLEAR BLAST RECORDS)

In Finland NIGHTWISH is one of the most popular bands at the moment, with their last CD ‘Bless the child’ going double platinum (60,000 units sold) and reaching the number 1 position in the Finnish National Charts. Now the band returns with their 5th official studio CD ‘Once’, an album which continues the style created by the band on their earlier records, yet with some new elements slipped through as well, and overall the sound is a bit more bombastic. Opener “Dark chest of wonders” hits like a hammer, because this is a superb uptempo Melodic Gothic Power Metal tune with a very strong chorus and after a few spins, this could well be the best NIGHTWISH ever recorded (!). With such an amazing start, you just can’t go wrong on the rest of the album, although next track “Wish I had an angel” is a bit weaker, because of the RAMMSTEIN influences. However, the remaining 9 tracks are all typical NIGHTWISH songs, of which some are very sensational, such as “Nemo” (the first single, a lovely uptempo Gothic Melodic Rocker), “Planet hell” (bombastic classical Opera Gothic Metal), “Ghost love score” (strong long midtempo bombastic Gothic Progmetal with a classical meets metal break, a very impressive 10 minutes counting tune) and closing track “Higher than hope” (an epic semi-ballad with a very strong chorus). Concluded, NIGHTWISH has released another very impressive CD, and maybe it’s even their best effort so far, so a further breakthrough in Europe (and maybe the USA) should be possible now, and without a doubt this CD is a must for every Gothic Metal fan!

HOUSE OF MIRRORS ‘NIGHTFLIGHT TO PARADISE’
(ESCAPE MUSIC/BERTUS)

The Finnish AOR band HOUSE OF MIRRORS started 10 years ago, but ‘Nightflight to paradise’ is their first official CD release. The band consists of lead singer Pekka Rautiainen (a very successfull solo artist in Finland as well), guitarist Jaakko Niitemaa, keyboardplayer Jonne Valtonen, bassist Juha Paananen and drummer Jimbo Makelainen (formerly IRON CROSS, remember them?). I already reviewed some demos of the band the past few years, but now finally we have their debut CD in out hands, and I can easily congratulate the band for releasing an AOR/Melodic Rock masterpiece! The CD was mastered at Finnvox studios by Mika Jussila (STRATOVARIUS, SONATA ARCTICA, NIGHTWISH) and in total 12 tracks are included. This is by far one of the best AOR/Melodic Rock releases so far this year and the fans of the genre will completely fell in love with HOUSE OF MIRRORS, because everything sounds perfect here, the hooks, the choruses, the vocals, the harmonyvocals and the guitar/keyboardsound. Highlights are “Spirit of freedom” (classic uptempo AOR/Melodic Rock with killer chorus a la TALISMAN), “Heart is the key” (superb midtempo AOR a la URBAN TALE, with very impressive chorus), “Top of the world” (uptempo melodic rock), “Forever searching for my soul” (big time uptempo melodic rock) and “Nightflight to paradise” (lovely midtempo AOR like a heavy SURVIVOR). Imagine a mix between TREAT/ALIEN/EUROPE, SURVIVOR and TALISMAN, and you’ll have the sensational CD of HOUSE OF MIRRORS, a must for all AOR/Melodic Rockfans!

ETERNAL GATE ‘SANDS OF TIME’ (INDEPENDENT)

Out of Italy comes ETERNAL GATE, a band playing typical Progressive Metal like so many others do as well, but happily it all sounds very nice. The CD contains 5 tracks, with a total playing time of 30 minutes. You can clearly hear that the band has to develop themselves in the near future, because not everything sounds perfect (vocals could be better), but instrumental and songwise ETERNAL GATE proves they are a good Progmetalband. Best songs are “More than this”, “Shines on me” and “King of a waste land”. More info can be found at:
http://eternalgate.cjb.net and e-mail at: begotto@tin.it

MILLENIUM ‘JERICHO’ (METAL HEAVEN/BERTUS)

‘Jericho’ is the 4th CD of the American melodic hardrockband MILLENIUM, and although musically not much has changed, the line-up of the band did change frequently. The line-up as of today is lead singer Todd Plant, guitarist Ralph Santolla (DEATH, EYEWITNESS, ICED EARTH) and guitarist Shane French (TEER, CIRCLE 2 CIRCLE), with as guest musicians, drummer Mark Prator (ICED EARTH, DEMONS AND WIZARDS) and bassists Steve McKenna (TEN) and Tere Bertke (BLACKHAWK). The new MILLENIUM CD was mixed by Pete Coleman (AC/DC, GARY HUGHES) and in total we can find 10 new tracks on the album. Musically it’s still very heavy Melodic Hardrock/Metal. The only negative thing is the slick production, because the vocals are produced too much to the back. The heavy guitarsound a la SAVATAGE/ICED EARTH is mixed with strong harmonyvocals and catchy choruses, so most of the songs will appeal to a wide audience (both melodic rock and metal fans). Songs like “Heaven awaits”, “Above this world”, “Wheel of fortune” and “Burning again” are all strong Melodic Hardrock/Metalsongs. There are also some weaker songs on the album (“My saving grace”, “Heresy” and “Morning star”), but overall this is a good album, which only could’ve had a better production.

NOCTA ‘COME OUT WHEREEVER YOU ARE!’ (DEMO)

This is a band from Athens, Greece and their 4-track demo contains music that may be described as 70s inspired Metal, with some very clear BLACK SABBATH influences. Songs like “Wicked woman” and “Sometimes” clearly reveal their BLACK SABBATH influences, and although it sounds very nice, I think the future will tell us more about this band, but in the meantime check out their site at:
www.nocta.org and e-mail them at: nocta@freemail.gr

ALCYON ‘IN THE SHADOW’ (DEMO)

ALCYON is a band from France, and they sent me a demo with 3 songs, which is a preview of their upcoming full album ‘In the shadows’. I truly hope to review that disc as well, because the 3 songs on this demo showed me that ALCYON is a very impressive Melodic Metalband. They play with a sort of Progressive touch, kinda like ELEGY and CONSORTIUM PROJECT. Instrumental it all sounds very well, and especially lead singer Jeff Martinez has a very impressive voice (a la IAN PARRY). The songs “Mastermind”, “2” and “Roads to dreams” are all very strong Melodic Metalsongs, so this new French band is definitely worth checking out. E-mail them at:
alcyonmetal@free.fr and visit their site through www.alcyon.fr.nr

VOODOO HILL ‘WILD SEED OF MOTHER EARTH’
(FRONTIERS RECORDS/BERTUS)

Lead singer GLENN HUGHES and guitarist DARIO MOLLO return with the 2nd VOODOO HILL album, and again it’s filled with high class original Hardrock, with a lot of groovy rhythms and of course the excellent soulful vocals of Glenn. 11 songs are included, and it’s musically clearly following the style created on the earlier VOODOO HILL and THE CAGE releases with guitarist Dario. Highlights on this new album are opener “Make believe”, “Atmosphere”, “She cast no shadow”, “My eyes don’t see it” and “Nothing stays the same” (best song!), all strong Melodic Hardrocksongs with great vocal and guitarwork. This is definitely a high quality CD, which will be loved instantly by the fans of GLENN HUGHES!

(Points: 8.4 out of 10)

IQ ‘DARK MATTER’ (GIANT ELECTRIC PEA)

IQ return with a fabulous new CD titled ‘Dark matter’. It took them some time to release this CD, but happily the result is very sensational, as this new IQ album is a definite must-have for all IQ and Neo-Progrockfans! Only 5 songs are included, but when it comes to the playing length, 2 of these tracks are very long, with as the tip of the iceberg the 24 minute epic closing track “Harvest of souls”, which is a wet dream for the Progfan! This album is by far one of the best Neo-Prog in a long time, and it’s maybe even one of the best IQ records since the classic ‘Subterranea’ album! Like I said the 2 longer tracks are the album’s best tracks, these are “Sacred sound” and “Harvest of souls”, both not only featuring excellent instrumental parts, but also very good vocal melodies. It’s good to see IQ back with a great new CD, which makes clear that they are still one of the leading bands in the Neo-Prog genre!

(Points: 8.8 out of 10)

ELVENKING ‘WYRD’ (AFM RECORDS/ROCK INC.)

The Italian Power Metalband ELVENKING returns with a new CD, but I am not really impressed with the album, because it all sounds like a weaker version of RHAPSODY, and that’s a pity because the band has the potential to do more with their music. Bottomline is clear, because the music is way too busy, a lot of different singers (male, female, growling) and the songs are actually only instrumental nice to hear. The songs itself are individual not really anything special, except perhaps the songs “The perpetual knot”, “A fiery stride”, “A poem for the firmament” and “Another haven”. As you might notice when you compare the best songs with the tracklisting, the best songs can be found towards the end, but in general this is only for the die-hard Italo Power Metal freaks!

STRYPER ‘7 WEEKS LIVE IN AMERICA 2003’
(FIFTY THREE FIVE RECORDS/BERTUS)

After 12 years of silence, last year STRYPER returned to the scene and proved they are the true kings of White Metal. They played 38 shows, and the result can now be heard on this live-CD. The CD has a great big sound and the 14 included songs prove that STRYPER is still able to play their classics very well. Michael Sweet still has a great strong voice too, and all of the STRYPER classics can be found on this wonderful CD, such as “Calling on you”, “Free”, “More than a man”, “Caught in the middle”, “Reach out”, “To hell with the devil” and “Soldiers under command”. Anyone who never checked out STRYPER, this is the CD you need to buy asap!

ICYCORE ‘WETWIRED’
(LIMB MUSIC/SUBURBAN)

Here we have another quality Italian band playing Progressive/Power Metal of a very high level. The band has a good lead singer and instrumental everything sounds quite perfect. 12 songs are included, with a total playing time of almost 70 minutes. All together the songs tell a story about the big influence the Internet has on our lives. It took the band almost 5 years to release the ‘Wetwired’ debut CD, because of problems with their former label UNDERGROUND SYMPHONY RECORDS. Eventually they never released a CD on that Italian label and switched to the quality German label LIMB MUSIC, whom recently released the official first CD of ICYCORE. This is without a doubt a very good album, with such stunning Progressive Metal songs like “The net”, “Visions of numeric life”, “Watch me now”, “Eternal unlife” and “Chrome”. Finally not the typical RHAPSODY/LABYRINTH clone, but a decent Progressive Metalband from Italy. At some points as good as a ANGRA or DREAM THEATER!

LE ROUX ‘SO FIRED UP’ (LALEROUX.COM)

It has been 20+ years ago since the legendary LE ROUX AOR classic ‘So fired up’ was released for the first time. The past few years a few re-issues of the album have been done, but so far this new CD re-issue by LE ROUX themselves is the best release of the classic album on CD. The album has been digitally remastered and the sound is as good as the original LP was back in 1983. Finally, we can enjoy one of the ultimate AOR classics on CD! It’s almost unbelievable that this LE ROUX record never got it’s 15 minutes of fame outside the European AOR community, because back in 1983 it should have been a US Billboard Charthit monster! Anyway, despite some minor success in the USA, the real fans of the ‘So fired up’ album could be found in Europe, where as of today still many AOR fans regard this particular LE ROUX album as one of their favourite records of all time! And indeed an AOR CLASSIC this album is from start to finish, with some amazing lead vocals of singer FERGIE FREDERIKSEN (TOTO, FREDERIKSEN/PHILIPS, TRILLION etc.) who probably did his best vocal performance ever on this record! Now it’s the year 2004 and this LE ROUX album is still one of the best AOR releases ever, with such superb songs like “Lifeline”, “Let me in”, “Yours tonight”, “Line on love”, “Carrie’s gone” and “Wait one minute”, all AOR Classics of the highest level! If ever you want to hear how early 1980s AOR sounded at it’s best, then please do buy this CD, and also the LE ROUX fans need to get this classic on CD through
http://www.laleroux.com

LE ROUX ‘LAST SAFE PLACE’ (LALEROUX.COM)

Between the 1980 ‘Up’ record and the classic ‘So fired up’ Louisiana’s LE ROUX released an album called ‘Last safe place’. This album was nowhere near as good as the ‘Up’ and ‘So fired up’ AOR classics. Instead, LE ROUX choose a more Westcoast approach on this 1982 album, which is now also available on CD through laleroux.com. Nevertheless, the album still features some amazing fantastic laid-back AOR songs in the style of FRANKE AND THE KNOCKOUTS, ALLIANCE and TOTO, such as the superb songs “It doesn’t matter”, “Nobody said it was easy”, “The last safe place on earth” and “You know how those boys are”, 4 instant AOR classics. However, the remaining 6 songs on ‘Last safe place’ were more Westcoast/Pop orientated, and therefore this LE ROUX album is not really recommended, but still for the LE ROUX fan a must have, because it took more than 20 years to get it released on CD, and it sounds awesome now, so they did a great job! Now we only have to wait for the ‘Up’ release to be re-issued onto CD, because that record was the other CLASSIC LE ROUX album from 1980 waiting to be made available on CD finally, hopefully that happens soon. In the meantime, you can buy this and the ‘So fired up’ album through
http://www.laleroux.com

BLIND ALLEY ‘INFINITY ENDS’
(AOR HEAVEN/BERTUS)

Sometime ago I reviewed the new CD of the Swedish band BLIND ALLEY, but back then I just had the advanced promo CDR, and now the album is officially released through AOR HEAVEN, so here follows the original review. Multi-instrumentalist MAGNUS OLSSON released 2 excellent albums, namely as FORTUNE in 1990 with a fantastic AOR record (a la LE ROUX/TOTO) and a single, and a few years ago as BLIND ALLEY with a lovely Westcoast-AOR album titled ‘On the way’ (a la BRETT WALKER’s debut). Now we are in the year 2003 and the man has finally released a new CD. The album is titled ‘Infinity ends’ and without a doubt, this is one of the best AOR releases in a long time, as everything seems to sound perfect, vocals, songs, production, instrumental parts, basically a perfect AOR CD! It’s very close to the last JIM JIDHED record, only maybe even better, because from start to finish this is prime-time pure 80s inspired AOR! The songs all feature catchy hooks and killer memorable choruses, while the vocals are superb (just like the previous recordings, Magnus used 2 lead singers, namely Hans Dimberg and Pierre Glans, but he also sings 2 songs alone!) and the 11 tracks have a big production. I can only say that this is a very very very good record, so be sure to check this album out a.s.a.p. Now back to the CD, which starts with the high lcass uptempo AOR rocker “All figured out” (very catchy). Next song “We still belong” is prime-time midtempo AOR a la ALIAS (“Waiting for love” style). “One life” follows in a more pure Classic 80s US AOR style, like a mix between LE ROUX, I-TEN and AVIATOR!!! “S.O.S.” is up next, and this is a lovely semi AOR ballad. The AOR HEAVEN stuff continues on the uptempo AOR rockers “Shadow from my heart” and “Here comes the heartache”. Things slow down on “From now on”, a good calmer Radio-AOR ballad. “Hunter” makes me think of DAKOTA, so classic 80s AOR again here! “Stay the night” is another great semi AOR ballad, while “Payback time” does again refer to Classic 80s AOR. The CD closes with the semi AOR rocker “Wild rose”. I honestly don’t know hwat more to say about this incredible record! Anyone waiting for a real decent AOR record that has nothing to do with today’s modern-rock style, then go for this BLIND ALLEY! Especially recommended if you dig stuff like DAKOTA, I-TEN, AVIATOR, LE ROUX... More info at:

MAGENTA ‘SEVEN’ (F2 MUSIC)

Out of the UK comes MAGENTA, a great Progressive Rockband with a female lead singer called Christina. She has a fantastic clean voice (a la MOSTLY AUTUMN) and gives the band an own identity, although there are in the instrumental parts clearly similarities to YES and IQ. The band released a double CD as debut a few years ago, which I unfortunately have not heard, but hopefully that will happen soon. 7 songs are on their 2nd CD ‘Seven’, while the band also released a CD-single titled ‘Broken’ recently, which contains an additional 5 tracks. Anyway, the new CD contains 76 minutes of playing time, so the 7 included tracks are quite lengthy, which will please the true Progrockfans. The keyboardwork is very impressive, and especially in tracks like “Greed”, “Lust” and “Sloth” everything sounds very good. This is high quality Progressive Rock the way it is meant to be played, and also their new single ‘Broken’ contains such impressive Neo-Prog, and therefore I can highly recommend this band to all fans of the Neo-Prog style. You can buy the CDs of MAGENTA through
http://www.progrock.co.uk and for more info on the band go to: http://www.f2music.co.uk

HOLLYWOOD ROSE ‘THE ROOTS OF GUNS’N’ROSES’
(DEADLINE MUSIC/CLEOPATRA RECORDS)

I wonder if this CD will also sell millions of records, because HOLLYWOOD ROSE is more or less the forerunner of GUNS’N’ROSES. Back in 1983 Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin started a band called HOLLYWOOD ROSE, and recorded a few demos. Now 5 songs of these demos are released on CD, with as bonus 10 remixed versions of the same 5 songs. Anyway, for a fan of GUNS’N’ROSES this might well be a must-have release, because it contains the beginning of Axl’s ‘singing’ career. Musically it sounded like a mix between NWOBHM, MOTLEY CRUE and AEROSMITH on such fast
songs like “Killing time”, “Rocker” and “Shadow of your love”. After the split of HOLLYWOOD ROSE, Axl formed GUNS’N’ROSES with Tracii Guns (who stepped out of GNR before their fame and fortune and formed LA GUNS) and went on selling millions of records and even 17 years later is still selling big time (GNR greatest hits entered the number 1 position in the USA), but his roots can be found on this HOLLYWOOD ROSE CD. The CD is available through http://www.cleorecs.com

FOG ‘VISIBILITY CLEARING’ (DEMO CDR)

FOG is an American band playing standard 80s Hardrock and correct me if I’m wrong but they are actually a White Metalband. Compare them to early WHITECROSS or RATT, but then not of such a high level, just basic Hardrock with as highlights songs uptempo rockers like “Am I worthy” and “Mirror in a mirror”. I think a future release will tell us more if the band is able to write strong songs, for now, check out FOG at:
http://www.fog-rocks.com

(Points: 7.1 out of 10)

CRYSKNIFE ‘DISBELIEVE’ (DEMO CDR)

CRYSKNIFE is an American duo, whom sent me a 3-track demo CDR titled ‘Disbelieve’. Musically it contains modern heavy rock/metal and except from the song “Inviolate” nothing really special happens here. I am afraid you have to check it our for yourself if this is up your alley, then go to:
http://www.crysknifeband.com and e-mail them at: tom@crysknifeband.com

RODOLFO ALCHOUSSON ‘TALISMAN’ (VIAJERO INMOVIL RECORDS)

Guitarist Rodolfo Alchourran recorded this CD ten years ago (when he was 60 years old!) and recently the CD was re-released on the label VIAJERO INMOVIL RECORDS. Rodolfo died a few years ago at the age of 65, and he was a legendary Argentinian artist. This CD contains material from 1994, and is musically good calmer fusion/jazz/progrock with also some Latin/Americana music (“Amiga nueva”). The best songs are “Conflicton”, “Hola Y adioses” and “Vola gorrion”. Together with a very nice packing, this is a nice CD to own, especially if you like calmer progressive music with some Jazz/Fusion influences. More info at:
http://www.viajeroinmovil.com

EDEN ‘FAN THE FLAME‘
(RETROACTIVE RECORDS)

The lead singer of this EDEN is called Joe Dokken, probably named after Don Dokken, because musically EDEN stands for typical 80s American Melodic Hardrock a la DOKKEN, although maybe a bit heavier here and there, kinda like a mix between FIREHOUSE, BONFIRE, WHITE LION and KEEL. The CD has a big sound, and actually the 10 songs were recorded back in 1994, but never released until now. The album was produced by REX CAROLL (of WHITECROSS fame) and I believe EDEN is a White Metalband, but they have a sound that will also appeal to the regular Melodic Hardrockfans. So, EDEN really has a great strong sound, which will please all Melodic Hardrockfans. Most of the songs are uptempo straight-ahead rockers, of which the best ones are “Need somebody”, “Show me”, “Forgotten child” and “Give me a reason”, but also a great semi-ballad like “Fan the flame” is present. Concluded, highly recommended to fans of strong melodic hardrock with the 80s spirit. More info at:

NONO BELVIS KIKE SANZOL M.I.A. ‘QUE ESTAN CELEBRANDO LOS HOMBRES’
(VIAJERO INMOVIL RECORDS)

Back in 1982 guitarist Nono Belvis and drummer Kike Sanzol recorded an album together. Both hail from Argentina and on the recently re-issued CD we can hear this 1982 album, which contains acoustic Progressive music, mostly instrumental. Towards the end it gets a bit more experimental, with the titletrack even being a very heavy early 1970s Psychedelic Progressive Hardrocksong. Anyway, this is quite experimental stuff, although songs like “Laqzos reales” and “Blanca presencia”are on the other hand very calm and acoustic based. For the prgorockfan who also wants to explore different styles outside the regular progrocksound, this is something worth checking out. More info at:

CANTURBE ‘EL VUELO DE LOS OLVIDADOS’
(VIAJERO INMOVIL RECORDS)

CANTURBE was a band from Argentina, and they recorded this album 25 years ago. The album has now been re-issued onto CD, and so we can enjoy the sounds they created so long ago. Musically the CD is filled with nice latin progressive rock, very calm sometimes with lots of acoustic guitar and piano, but songs like “Leccion de sangre”, “En virtud del obcecado” and “Linyera de alcoba” sound quite nice. Check it out if you’re into typical Latin prog! More info at:

NAKED BEGGARS ‘NAKED BEGGARS’ (SMA RECORDS)

Out of Nashville, USA comes the Female Fronted Rockband NAKED BEGGARS. They have a good strong singer called Inga Brittingham, who sounds like PAT BENATAR. Musically it’s a bit more updated Melodic Poprock, with even similarities to a ANOUK or ALANNIS MORISETTE, yet with a clear 80s approach as well. 11 songs are included on their debut CD, with as best ones the rockers “No more”, “Got me runnin’”, “Kind of girl” and “Bitch”. It’s not really Hardrock what we get to hear, but NAKED BEGGARS is more a heavy Rockband with a slight touch of early PAT BENATAR, but also with strong modern touches here and there. Check it out if you’re into raw female fronted rockmusic. More info at:

SACRED ‘BEYOND THE END OF THE WORLD’
(HEAVENCROSS RECORDS/ROCK INC.)

‘Beyond the end of the world’ is the first CD of the Spanish band SACRED. Musically we get to hear typical standard Melodic Hardrock and although the bio says this is one of the new year’s big surprises, I am afraid this will be just one of many standard Melodic Hardrock releases. You can easily compare the band to FAITHFUL, EVIDENCE, NORDICA and the rest of the South European acts we have seen the past few years in the Melodic Hardrock genre. Instrumental everything is played very well, the mastering of the CD by Tommy Newton (HELLOWEEN) is of course impressive, but vocally lead singer Uri Canalias is nothing that special. Also, from the 10 included songs only the uptempo melodic rockers like “Shame on you”, “Nocturnal dike”, “Midnight” and “Where the wind will blow” sound nice, but most of the material goes in one ear and out the other. This is Melodic Hardrock by the numbers, which still gets a reasonable rating, because it is played well, but there’s nothing sensational on the debut CD of SACRED.

COOPER ‘YOUR TRIP BEGINS HERE...’ (EMG/ROCK INC.)

This Dutch band is only one year old, but the bandmembers have played in the past a combined experience of playing more than 400 shows, so these are definitely skilled musicians. Their debut mini-CD sounds quite impressive, although first track “Music from the heart” is just a nice acoustic little piece. Things really get interesting on next track “Who is the one?”, a great midtempo AOR/Sympho song, which reminds me a lot of an other Dutch band from the past, namely RUBICON (remember them???), and also a little bit FOR ABSENT FRIENDS and AQUILA (new band with TERRA NOVA singer). The band has a very good lead singer called John Cuijpers, and although only 5 songs are included on the first CD of COOPER, I hear that this is a band to look out for in the future. Other highlights besides “Who is the one?” are “Backward glance” (uptempo Melodic Rocker) and closing track “Let me out!!”. Concluded, a great new Dutch band with a bright future if they can hold on
to the high level created on this mini-CD!

CEA SERIN ‘...WHERE MEMORIES COMBINE...’
(HEAVENCROSS RECORDS/ROCK INC.)

CEA SERIN is a US band playing technical Progressive Metal, and they do it very well. Instrumental it’s of a very high level (DREAM THEATER and QUEENSRYCHE, but then even more technical) and also the lead vocals sound rather impressive, but there’s always a but and this time the problem is that there are also some death-growls/black-screams to be heard sometimes, which sadly disturbs the music quite a bit. That’s really a pity, because like I said this is definitely a high quality band, with some very strong songs on their album like “Embracing the absence”, “Meridian’s tear” and “Into the vivid cherishing”. Hopefully next time no black/death-growls, then this would be a very sensational Progressive Metalband!

(Points: 7.8 out of 10)

KELVIN ZHERO ‘NEW SHOES’ (ROCK INC)

This Dutch band released a mini-CD consisting of 4 tracks and musically this is honest Bluesy Rock, with some BAD COMPANY influences here and there such as on the opening track “Bumpy road”. Best song on the CD is the uptempo rocker “Amazing discoveries”, which has some 80s OZZY references. KELVIN ZHERO plays their no-nonsense Hardrockstyle quite well and you can check ‘em out for yourself at:

TRACII GUNS ‘ALL EYES ARE WATCHIN’” (MAUSOLEUM RECORDS)

Besides LA GUNS, guitarist TRACII GUNS now also has a solo project, which features a different line-up around him, and also a much heavier musical approach, namely pure 80s US Metal! Songs like “Shitkicker” and “People will die” are very heavy guitar driven Metal songs with some early ANTHRAX similarities, especially during the gang vocals. Although nothing new is presented here, this is a nice side-project from Tracii, as the stuff he put out with LA GUNS lately was becoming quite boring. Besides the 11 TRACII GUNS songs, as a bonus we are also surprised with a few LA GUNS live songs and covers (VAN HALEN and AC/DC). Nevertheless, this is very different from the LA GUNS stuff, so be aware if you’re a die-hard fan of the band and you’re expecting another typical LA GUNS record.

(Points: 7.6 out of 10)

LA GUNS ‘LIVE AMMO’ (MAUSOLEUM RECORDS)

Through the years LA GUNS have released a lot of albums, and the past few years I have also seen a lot of Live and best of releases among them. Now there’s another live CD available, and the 14 tracks included here were recorded live at the Key Club on Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, USA. This was the place to be in the 1980s for Hair-Metal, and it seems that nowadays there’s also a good band playing there every now and then. Anyway, for the LA GUNS fan this CD is a must, but after 15 years of LA GUNS, I am not that impressed anymore with the band’s Sleazy hardrock, but I do appreciate their confidence in holding on to their roots, because they still play a lot of songs from their classy first couple of records, such as “Sex action”, “One more reason”, “Kiss my love goodbye”, “Over the edge”, “Electric gypsy” and “Ballad of Jane”. A must for LA GUNS fans!

PERZONAL WAR ‘FACES’ (AFM RECORDS/ROCK INC)

‘Faces’ is already the 4th CD of the German band PERZONAL WAR, a band mixing Thrash and Power Metal, ending up sounding like an improved version of METALLICA, but with clearly a more Power Metal orientated sound, a straight-ahead approach in general and melodic singable choruses. However, on some songs there’s definitely a strong METALLICA/MEGADETH approach. 12 songs are included on the new CD of the band, and it actually does sound pretty good, although not all songs are impressive. However, some of the included tracks here are quite good, such as “My secret” (very strong song, like a mix between HIM and PRETTY MAIDS, first single, and also featured as a professional videoclip on this CD), “From within through time”, “Tears” and “The sleeper” (a bonustrack). The band has a strong sound of it’s own, and therefore they deserve a reasonable rating.

(Points: 8.1 out of 10)

SUPREMACY ‘ANGEL PROMO’ (DEMO CDR)

It’s a pity only 3 songs are included on the demo of the Australian band SUPREMACY, because it all sounds very impressive and makes you wanting to hear more. The band has a very big sound, and the 3 included songs have a huge sound, which is as good as a label production release! All songs are very impressive, with as best track “Inner truth”, which even features a guest appearance by none-other than Tobias Sammet (EDGUY/AVANTASIA). Musically this female fronted act is playing a mix of Gothic and Power Metal, like a mix between NIGHTWISH and EDGUY, yet with an own approach. I found this demo a very good one, which might easily attract some of the European Metal labels. More info at:

ROCKSTAR ‘ROCKSTAR’ (VICIOUS TREND PRODUCTIONS)

Out of the New York area comes the band ROCKSTAR, a band playing late 70s Pomp/Progressive Rock, at times reminding of bands like ANGEL, ROADMASTER... This means rich keys, big guitars, harmonyvocals and a progressive rocksound, and they do it all very well. It sounds really professional, and I am really glad to hear bands like ROCKSTAR, as they sound like no other band in the scene at the moment. This is timeless music and their first CD is really a must to hear if you’re a fan of ANGEL, NEW ENGLAND and those type of bands. 14 songs are on the CD, with a total playing time of more than 70 minutes! Highlights can be found in the shape of “Tomorrow’s Martyr”, “On the road alone”, “It’s called rock!” (classy 70s keyboardwork) and the 17 minutes counting closing track “Hero”. The band has a good male lead singer, but sometimes also the female keyboardplayer Lynn Carol sings a song, and she has a very good voice actually. Anyway, this band is recommended to the ANGEL/NEW ENGLAND/STARCASTLE fans, although it’s maybe a bit less keyboard orientated! More info at:

ASLAN ‘INFINITE FRICTION’ (PRECISION RECORDS)

ASLAN is a Progmetalband from Oklahoma, USA and they sent me their CD ‘Infinite friction’. 8 songs are included, of which closing track “Triton among the minnows” is the most notable, as this is a 30 minutes counting epic Progressive Rock/Metal journey, making the total playing length of the CD at 80 minutes (!). The music is very progressive, but also melodic and quite modern at times. Especially the first song “Translucent” is very modern Progressive Metal, a bit like PAIN OF SALVATION crossed with KING’S X. Moving on deeper into the CD, you can explore a very melodic progressive rock/metalsound, with some great songs like “New Jerusalem”, “Earth and sky collide”, “Eclipsed” and “Triton among the minnows”. When mentioning the songtitles, you will notice that the band also has something to tell in their lyrics, which is quite typical for a progressive band. Although not all songs are convincing, and the band sounds like a rawer progmetalband, with some modern influences, I think fans of for example PAIN OF SALVATION might find something of interest in ASLAN. WARCHILD ‘OPEN FIRE’ (INDEPENDENT)

WARCHILD is a German band, and they play high quality Melodic Progressive Metal, not unlike a mix between VANDENPLAS and AXXIS. 14 songs are included on the CD, and I can easily say that everything sounds quite good, so this is definitely an impressive band to check out if you like that typical German Melodic Progressive Metalsound (very much like VANDENPLAS). Besides, the band also has a great lead singer (Rouven M. Blitz), a professional full backing band (2 guitarplayers, a keyboardplayer, bass and drums) and also their CD has a big sound/production, so this WARCHILD is by far a high quality band. Highlights on their debut CD ‘Open fire” are “Protect yourself”, “Midsummernightsdream”, “Warchild”, “Unreal” (bonustrack), “Dragon” and “Alive alone”. Progmetalfans need to check out this band asap at:

BLIND SEVEN ‘INCISIONS’ (INDEPENDENT)

Out of Arizona, USA comes the Christian Melodic Metalband BLIND SEVEN. This band is mixing classic 80s Melodic Metal of STRYPER and SKID ROW with more modern groovy sounds, but happily the melodic sound wins in the end, and so we can enjoy some quality music during the 50 minutes the CD is playing. 9 songs are included, and what strikes me is the fact that BLIND SEVEN has a very good lead singer called RICHIE Z, who sounds like Michael Sweet (of STRYPER). First song “Broke down the walls” has a very groovy heavy modern guitarsound, but the song itself is still a great melodic metaltune, with a strong chorus. The CD continues in this style, with as other highlights “Carrying on”, “Breaking glass” and “7 yrs.” (a bit like DREAM THEATER). Imagine a mix between SKID ROW, STRYPER and TALISMAN, and you’re close to the groovy Melodic Hardrock/Metal sound of BLIND SEVEN. More info at:

BOB WHEELER AND FRIENDS
‘LENDING A HELPING HAND’ (INDEPENDENT)

A long time ago I reviewed an underrated AOR/Melodic Rock Classic from 1986 from a guy called BOB WHEELER. Well, I thought after this album Bob never recorded anything, but boy was I wrong when he informed me that he recorded 8 more albums after 1986 (!). Musically still deeply into 80s kinda ‘Hair Metal’, the album ‘Lending a helping hand’ Bob recorded back in 1999 was more or less a slightly different affair than his 1986 debut. This CD contains 13 songs, and although it’s a quality CD, with a strong production and instrumental sounding very impressive, the problem is that none of the included songs reaches the high level of his 1986 debut. Musically BOB WHEELER is now more into late 80s/early 90s American Mainstream Poser Hardrock like a SKID ROW meets SLAUGHTER kinda trip. It’s not bad at all what we get to hear, but we heard it so many times before in the past, and especially in 1990 this kind of Hair Metal was extremely popular in the USA. I had rather hoped for something along the lines of his fantastic 1986 debut, but maybe something of his other releases has more in common with that release. However, maybe now the time is right to get Bob signed to a label, and re-issue that 1986 album onto CD. Anyway, back to his 1999 album, like I said, a nice Melodic American Poser Hardrockalbum, with good uptempo rockers like “Family tree”, “Don’t fight it” and “Mind disease” and every now and then a great melodic rockballad (BON JOVI meets SKID ROW) like “Find another reason”. Bob also sent me an album he recorded under the moniker of T.C. JESTER, and the pity with this demo CDR album is the weak sound quality, because musically it’s a great strong Melodic Hardrockalbum, with some very nice songs like “Earthly role”, “Back’s to the wall”, “Now that I’m gone” and “Bad love”, all sounding like JADED HEART, FIREHOUSE, DANGER DANGER... If only the sound quality was better, then this would have gotten a very high rating, but for now it’s spoiling the album too much to even rate it at all. His official full-length CD ‘Lending a helping hand’ however has a great big sound and is a nice Melodic Hardrockalbum, but I know Bob can do so much better, like the TC JESTER record and especially like on his 1986 classic AOR/Melodic Rock debut, which sounded similar in style to AVIATOR, WHITE SISTER, TOUR DE FORCE, PROPHET... Finally, Bob also sent me the CD-single “Come on back to me”, which is a good typical AOR/Melodic Rockballad. However, if you’re more a SKID ROW fan, you might like the CD ‘Lending a helping hand’ a lot more, and the good news for those fans is that Bob is going to re-record the CD again soon, but I hope the 1986 album gets a re-issue someday soon. One way or the other, more info through e-mail at:

KERIX ‘NEW LAND’ (DEMO)

Female fronted MelodicGothic (Power) Metal is what we get to hear from the band KERIX. They sent me a 2-track CD, which contains quality music with influences from AFTER FOREVER and NIGHTWISH. Although the sound quality is not as good as those bands, you can definitely hear this band has a future. The songs are titled “When I accepted” and “New land” (great chorus), and both are very impressive quality female Gothic Metalsongs. Their female lead singer Priscila Silver definitely has potential and I think a future full-length CD will tell us much more about KERIX. In the meantime check out their site at:

ANGUISH FORCE ‘ANGUISH FORCE’ (ANGUISH FORCE RECORDS)

An independent release from the Italian band ANGUISH FORCE, and definitely a very sensational release. The CD is very professional, because it is in digipack, with a big production, a large CD booklet, everything that a quality CD release needs to have is present. If we have a listen to the music, the conclusion is that ANGUISH FORCE is also sounding very impressive. They play Melodic metal at it’s best, a bit like DREAM EVIL meets NOCTURNAL RITES. 10 songs are included, of which the best ones are “Maiden of Iron, “Space station 074” (fantastic), “The legend of thunder” and “The way of the warrior”. This is the way Metal is supposed to sound, because besides a strong lead singer (Tommy Ti. Grotto), also instrumental these guys know how to play True Metal! ANGUISH FORCE is definitely a highly recommended band, so go check them out at:
