Following favorable consumer research and its successful launch in the US, Vanilla Coke is set to make its debut in Australia and New Zealand this month and nationwide in Australia in October.
Expensive 'Graffiti'
The Indian Supreme Court has fined the soft drinks groups, PepsiCo and
Coca-Cola, along with 10 other companies, for painting advertisements on the
eco-fragile rock face along a stretch of highway in the Manali-Rhotang Pass in
the Himalayas. The court ordered the two drinks companies to deposit Rupees
200,000 ($4,000). The other companies, which included Nestle India, were told to
pay Rupees 100,000 each towards the cost of repairing the damage.
Plans to sell alcoholic flavored milk drinks have run into opposition from liquor licensing and health authorities in the Australian state of Victoria. Wicked Holdings, a company based in the provincial city of Shepparton, wants to sell strawberry, banana and chocolate flavored Moo Joose in bottle shops, clubs and nightclubs, with an alcohol level of 5.3% in 250ml bottles. The state authority, Liquor Licensing Victoria, rejected the company's application for a pre-retail license on the grounds that the product would lead to alcohol misuse and abuse. Wicked Holdings plans to appeal. Although the company said the product would be sold only in licensed outlets, the Australian Drug Foundation said it was a nightmare which would put alcohol within the reach of children. The Australian Dairy Farmers Federation said it was concerned the drink would confuse consumers. Wicked Holdings said the product had been extensively researched and met the standards of other RTDs.
Pepsi is planning possibly the biggest promotional giveaway in marketing history - a trip to space. Pepsi is in talks with the Russian Aviation and Space Agency to buy a £10million shuttle ticket to the Mir space station. If successful, Pepsi plans to give this away as a prize on a TV game show broadcast in the US.

From JerryW, Imperial Beach, California : "I read with interest the article on what to call a 'soft drink'. (That is one of the names used.) I have heard various things used, but I take exception with calling a soda a 'coke.' Coke is a registered trade mark of Coca-Cola and should refer only to that drink. To us, it otherwise is definitely in error. Some may do so, but they are misusing the word. Would you ask for a soda by saying ' Coca-Cola' if you wanted something else? If you use the word ' coke', you should expect to get a Coca-Cola, nothing else. If you go to a restaurant and ask to be served a Coke, and they give you Pepsi-Cola they can be sued for misrepresentation. Personally I ask for a 'Coke'. All else is belly wash. That is what I always tell my friends and it gets a laugh. Also if I remember correctly, ' phosphates' is something else. It was made by the 'soda jerk', but was somewhat different. I don't think it was ever bottled. In Mexico we call them 'sodas', but usually ask for them by name, like Pepsi, or Coke, Sprite, etc. In Mexico City, they use 'limonada', literally, lemonade. Talk about confusing. Ever order a lemonade de Coca-Cola?
From CokeGirl : A few days ago, I received a mail from Juan Antonio Lopez Delgado, Santa Cruz de Tenerife - Islas Canarias. He asked if Orange Crush was still being produced in US. I answered, "Yes", and gave him the current information for the company. It seems the interest came from that his family once bottled Orange Crush, and this was his reply:
"Many thanks for the information. Now I have the way to know the events around Orange Crush. First was Guilermo Olsen the bottler. Then around (the) 60's, my father and Mr. Olsen founded "Bebidas y Licores Canarios, S.A." (Belcasa) and developed the brand from 30.000 boxes of 24 bottles of 200 c.c. to 150.000 in only three years. After that, Mr. Olsen sold his actions to some (of) his friends and we sold out ours two years later. The new owners did not ( have) the love for a good bottler, and for Orange Crush too, and closed the bottling plant.
Best regards, Juan"

FYI: The Skating Girl |
Miriam Drahos was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as the oldest child of Bella and Otto Stehlik. Raised in Iowa with her younger sister and brother, her mother worked at a local bank and her father was a bus driver. Miriam attended Wilson High School, where she was a cheerleader.
After graduating high school, Miriam obtained a job with a bank in the safe deposit area where she met Ozzie Drahos. Wanting to give Ozzie a picture of herself, she went down to the Studio for a portrait and the photographer was intrigued by her looks and poise, and sent a copy of the pictures to The John Powers Modeling Agency in New York.
The agency contacted Miriam and asked if she was interested in modeling. Miriam liked the idea and decided to go to New York and give it a try. Things went well and she did several ads for products such as Dr. Lyons Tooth Powder and Mojud Hosiery. There she met Joan Crawford, who took a liking to her, and suggested that Miriam model for Coca-Cola. The agency sent her down to Atlanta.
There, Miriam worked for one day for a fee of under $100, posing for numerous pictures that became magazine advertisements, billboards, and even calendars. Four of them ended up on trays, the most well-known being "The Skating Girl".
Many poses were done requiring many outfit changes, as well as hair coloring. Many would not realize all were the same girl. Later, Miriam would return home, to a different life that led to marriage with Ozzie.
Retired now, the couple spend time scouring garage sales, flea markets and antique shops for trays and ads from Miriam's Coca-Cola modeling. The have acquired several trays, including a tray given to her at a reunion of the women who served with her in the military. They chuckle over the fact that when they buy an item, many times they have to pay more for it than what Miriam earned for her original fee, and that the seller never realizes that Miriam is the girl on the item.
