spencer- guitar, voice, singing?, screaming and high pitched noise.
ryan- drums, loud mouth, comic book almanac.
jason- guitar, voice, growl, singing? guitar and leg humping.
steve- bass, beard, sweet screaming, and a tattoo of jesus's mom.
A dude named mike used to play bass for us but real life caught up to him and he was growing disheartened with the scene in our area. Which pretty much lacks any heart, except for a few bands. He also lacked the funds for a decent bass rig due to having to pay for two kids, so he boned out. He is still our good friend but we will never see him at a show again.
2. How long have you fellers been kickin round the place?
we have been around in this band for about a year only taking it serious since January of 2001. we have all been in numerous other bands which were never able to get passed two shows and a demo tape. we have all been involved in hard core since like junior high when we used to listen to Avail and go see Still Life, Strife, and Strung Out at the Vampire Lounge, man that makes us look kind of old.
3. You put out a 2 track demo a while ago. Any plans to release more stuff soon?
lots of plans. We are hoping to put out a split 12" or a EP CD on a label that jason is starting. the demo is out dated already so the new stuff will be 100 times tighter and heavier. we are going to try and record soon but are waiting for a singer to fall into our lap. we will most likely record what we have and then redo the vocals when we get some one we can hang out with to sing for us.

4. California has produced some amazing punk bands in the past, what is the scene like at the moment?
you aren't cool unless you look like Spock! there are actually several very cool, good hearted bands out here, we found them because no one else would play with us:
under a dying sun.
quest for quintana roo
http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/86/quest_for_quintana_roo.html. (they are
from the San Francisco area).
sasha
kenji
There are allot of other bands that we dig but have never played with like
countervail, curl up and die, team carry on, yaphett kodo, and time in
malta. bury me standing visits from Arizona pretty often which fucking
kicks ass.
It is hard to get shows unless you know people or have allot of "punk
points" on your merit card. I apologise for sounding pessimistic but it is
our belief that allot of what makes the scene special is either looked down
upon or taken for granted. but hey what do we know, we have only been here
since longer than we can remember and are being looked down upon by newbie
spock rockers who couldn't tell good music from a jack ass with a key
board. Viva la high school clichés!
That is just in the immediate area surrounding our home base though. we
can't really speak about the whole state. we try to set up shows with good
hearted bands and end up with a really positive crowd which is cool. It is
a sign of hope for the burnt out old men we are slowly becoming. we love
hard core more than any thing and want to give back what we have received,
so here is cain marko- amidst a different scene than the one it was birthed
from.
in short the scene is alright but it could use some help. I think bands
should start expressing how they feel about things, not really political
but like just there synopsis on how they think the scene is or what they
are all about- besides being spooky and playing with their back to the
crowd. hard core involves people it wouldn't hurt to actually be personable
on stage, in the crowd, out side the show, or even around town.
5. Cainmarko has played at a few interesting venues ( a karate studio recently I hear!). What would you consider the best and worst live shows you have played?
so far the best show was march 2nd at the smell in down town LA. we played
with sasha, durga, and under a dying sun. we actually are good friends with
under a dying sun and try to visit them as much as possible- the shows seem
to be a good excuse to hang out with them! the smell rocks and alex (he
used to run the pch) rocks, we are so appreciative of places like these.
there was one show that was particularly bad, actually it was at that
karate studio. the girl running it finally let us play there but wouldn't
let us play on the nights that we wanted with other bands (which we had
hooked her up with). any ways we played and then had to leave because we
were supposed to play at the leeds house in simi. before we left she over
heard our old bass player talking about some band he had got into an
altercation with on a message board and had a hissy fit. any ways we lost
some shows there (with the assistant, and some other bands) as a result and
I think we got some demerit punk rock points! whatever, her place stopped
having shows soon after. it goes back to the whole disillusionment thing.
but I guess some people do things to be cool rather than from the heart. a
direct result of that show was our old bass player throwing in the towel.
6. Describe Cainmarko in 5 words
your freedom's a mother fucker.
7. What are your songs about? Who writes the lyrics?
every one contributes. spencer and jason tend to write things down once and
a while, but it seems those just end up being like a general topic and
every one just sings what comes to them while we are playing.
in case you couldn't guess we have a few songs about the scene in our area,
a love song, and a song about mass media and how it sways popular opinion.
8. Any ambitions? Touring (US or overseas)? World domination? Mass murder?
to make postmodernism a predominant form of thought. and a summer tour in the last weeks of august. we are looking for travelling companions who can rock. we are also planning some shows in may and june some time.
Thanks heaps for doing the interview! Bestow some words of wisdom upon us!!
it's not what you do, it's why you do it.
