Growing up in Glenurquhart!
This is the sixth of several pages about the 10 years I lived in the "Glen",at Shenval and at school in Corrimony,in the 1960`s.
Corrimony Church
This Church was built in 1816,as a school,by the proprietor of Corrimony,Thomas Ogilvie. Corrimony School was opened just along the road,in 1882.My dad was a lay preacher and held services at no. 10 Shenval, and he took his turn at Corrimony, taking services along with "John Tom",the grocer from Lewiston(very red face),Mr MacKenzie,Milton(he had a bad stutter);Mr Michael,Achtemarack and Mr Campbell the minister at Drumnadrochit. Dad told me that Mr Michael had worked as a supervisor on the Indian Railways and that every morning in GlenUrquhart,he faced east and said the Lords Prayer in Indian Dialect.

This picture was taken in August 2001,and I can`t see anything that`s changed in over thirty years, its like stepping back in time. Most of the children from Shenval, walked the couple of miles up to the Church, every Sunday.Dad took the senior class,Mrs Girvan took the middle age group, round the table, just off to the left in the picture and Mary Girvan took the wee ones through in the vestry. We used to race up the Glen so that we had time to climb the two large fir trees opposite the church, before we had to go in.I can vividly recall the Sunday that Gladys Aylward, the English Missionary who worked in China, visited us.She was dressed in very colourful silk Chinese Robes and I was amazed when Jean and Mary Girvan also appeared in similar clothes.Miss Aylward had some exciting stories to tell!
