It is with open eyes that we embrace the art presented to you on ArtWalk. We call it Latin American; not because of the classification imposed from above, by the system that LOVES to label everything, but because it's a term that people everywhere have become accustomed to!
When Eduardo Galeano was asked in an interview what he thought the "Latin American way of seeing" was he responded: " I will never commit such a crime!.....[Latin America] contains so many worlds, so many different ways of seeing!" refering to the diversity in the Americas.
Edward J. Sullivan (Latin American Art in the Twentieth Century): We must "help dispel the essentially false notion of the existence of a monolithic Latin American culture. The term 'Latin America' itself is a questionable one. Invented in France around 1860, it has been often misused to denote a common cultural heritage..."
For your ArtWalk we suggest you just follow the ARROWS! Walk through our contemporary gallery, and make your way to DAY OF THE DEAD gallery. Or if you like you can still use the direct links on the bottom of each page. But other than lots of art, there are also lots of great LINKS. Divided into two main sections, there are links to Contemporary Art in the Latin American Museums and Galleries and artists throughout the continent. AND links to LITERATURE, MUSIC, FILM, PHOTOGRAPHY...and even some online STORES as well as some suggested BOOKS. If YOU know of a website you think we should have a link to, send us your suggestion.
We are here to connect. We are not here to make big claims. We create because we have to. We don't believe in the Art business, Art market, etc. But if you see something you like drop us a line, it just might be availabe for sale. We are not a government, so we can not put you in prison for stealing our images. But as tradition dictates we'll have to claim copyright for our work. If you want to use any of it just let us know!
We can go on forever with this nonsense but we won't. We can however offer suggestions for your reading enjoyment. We talk through our images mainly, SO TAKE A WALK...AN ARTWALK!!
