08/27/03: The band finally responded to the questions I sent them. I picked the best questions that were asked in the message board a few months ago... enjoy... -pete cleveland fan: i noticed many concepts and ideas presented in 'el cielo', but was not sure how accurate my findings were. from the hints on your site and other sources i thought i had found out some of what lies within the album...the main focus obviously being sleep paralysis, but under that the first track being an ode to dali and his painting, which correlated to the concept, sleep paralysis. i also found nature and change of oneself to be constantly apparent through the lyrics and overall feeling of the record. i was wondering if this is at all accurate or am i only seeing coincidental occurances. if these arent the main focuses of the piece, could you expand on what is? dredg: the album doesn’t have a message. I think some people look into it for a finite message. We aren’t interested in portraying some deep message. There is an underlying theme of the sub conscious, being sleep paralysis. It intrigued us and we felt a lot of those songs were very passive; sub conscious. The inlay is a collection of actual sleep paralysis accounts. We varied them a bit of course. The ambiguity is always what we’ve enjoyed from music. Miranda: As far as influences go, what is the most important direction for the band? What is your biggest goal as a group, and how do you feel about the direction your peers have taken around you? These guys are amazing in concert, before I moved to Hawaii a group of friends and I followed them and Alien Ant Farm around the summer of 2000. I've shared their music with so many people on the island, so my biggest question is when are they planning a tour for Hawaii??Thanks again to Drew for my three beautiful paintings, a day doesnt go by that someone doesnt ask about them! dredg: we have to keep moving. What we listen to. What we play, write. Keeping things new and different is very important. Touring in ways that we haven’t before. Like Hawaii. Hefer do you Guys ever check out yuor fans sites? dredg: we’ve checked out a couple. It’s a huge compliment that someone would take time to make a site for us. Elizabeth: are you planning on playing live any time soon in tennessee... or any states remotely close to tennessee? dredg: we’re just writing now so touring is months away. No information yet. moosehaven MC: Are there any plans tour parts of the world you have not yet visted.. i.e japan/asain/pacific regions. (read australia) dredg: No plans, but we would love to. Anonymous: encourage bootlegging? do they always trash their equipmeant and why? does "i can not find the other half" have any reference to roman literature? dredg: bootlegging is good stuff. Ive always loved rare live recordings. People have to understand when they hear them that it might sound miserable, but that’s what comes with bootlegging. No we don’t always destroy equiptment. It’s just if it feels right. Normally a really bad or really good show does it. The two extremes. No roman literature references Jared: How did the band meet each other? dredg: school, sports, mutual friends ten years ago. Ricardo Silva: is art a subject that appeals u that much or u just want to be different? why so many references to penguins? dredg: of course art appeals to us. Do we read ten books a week and go to museums every day, no. but art is everywhere and any one who creates something out emotion or thought has in a sense created art. Some people might think that’s pretentious but we just started putting drew and gavin’s art on stage when we played. No big statement. Just something to look at besides our ugly faces. penguins can't fly. DRE Dog: PLEASE ASK THIS PLESE! Do you guys like to smoke pot or do shrroms or whatever is hip these days when it comes to writing music? You guys are wonderious! dredg: is this a joke. Hip? Wonderious? TaddleFlisk: whats your ethnic back ground? On El Cielo ther are some middle eastern sound to it / i could be wrong. dredg: one Portuguese fisherman, one Italian hitman, one Norwegian Viking, and a french-greman-native American artiste Jordan: Album #3, When? and Producer? dredg: don’t know, don’t know Matt: Any sports that interest you guys? Favorite teams? Player? dredg: the bay area is good 08/16/03: dredg needs your piano! According to the guys, "...our old piano is not in working order anymore and we were wondering if anyone had a wall/upright piano they would be willing to loan the band for the writing process until the end of the year. We would gladly pay for a piano mover and tuner when it arrives back in your home. It would be extremely helpful if the location of the piano was in the bay area but if not we can always try and make ends meet. you can email dredg@hotmail.com if you think this could be a possibility. thanks for your help, dredg." 08/16/03: That last update is BS, some punk ass kids thought they'd be funny to send me bull shit tour news. sorry about that... 08/08/03: I've gotten plenty of email from people all over the place mentioning something about dredg touring with A Perfect Circle in the fall. Personally, I'd love to see this happen. It would be a "perfect tour". Okay, I'm a dork! But anyway, I think the fall tour with Taproot is officially dead, I think it was just an idea? ... But nothing is for certain though. I could actually see APC and dredg touring together, and then dredg heading into the studio after that in the winter time? Who knows? May be we'll see A Perfect Circle, (Deftones), Taproot, and dredg tour!? Okay, Any way, this is all gossip. Nothing's officially confirmed. Sorry if I got your pants wet. 08/01/03: So im in a new band, for those interested check out: www.bluebloom.cjb.net. We have a sample clip up of whats to come. Thanks. 07/21/03: The questions that I've sent to dredg hasn't been answered yet... should come soon! Anyway the exciting part is that I have some RARE dredg stuff posted for you folks, this is from the EARLY EARLY days of dredg. Thanks to G. Schwender (desertpenguin) 07/10/03: Thank you ERIC P. for the 'El Cielo - Patient Notes'. I know I was supposed to post it up back in February, anyway I had it up for some time now in the 'Lyrics' page. You can click here to read it. Once again, thank you Eric. Lastly, the questions were sent to the band last week. I should be getting the answers back soon and I'll have them posted! 07/09/03:SEVEN new dates, opening for DEFTONES!:
06/26/03:dredg frontman Gavin Hayes recently commented on what the bands next album will sound like, here's what he had to say:
"Maybe a mixture of the first two. A little more of the energy of the first one, maybe a little more dramatic in the dynamics, probably a little more upbeat, ya know? This one ("El Cielo") was based on dreaming and sub-conscious so the songs kinda like felt that way. Depending on the concept and how things go, I feel there will be a lot more energy. It will be that mixed with what's been done. It's hard to tell before. Try to re-correct all the mistakes we thought we did on the other two.. so I think there will be progress..." (theprp)
06/20/03: dredg will re-release 'El Cielo' in SACD (Super Audio) Format on August 5th. Also rumours are floating around that dredg will tour with Taproot again. Lastly, The Music video for 'OF THE ROOM', the one I did can be viewed here.
06/19/03: Once again, I'm sorry for not updating as much. I've been busy with school, the media, (I'm sure you've heard about the recent Powder Puff Hazing Incident), work, resolent (broke up), and all that other jazz. Well, it's now summer, so I'm free... I'm gonna share a boring story with you... I was going to see dredg in Chicago at the Elbo Room, but it was 21+, so I decided to go to the show in Milwaukee @ the Rave. One of my best friends (Ryan) was moving the day after on Sunday morning. So, I decided not to go to the show in Milwaukee and chill with my friend because it was his last night in Northbrook (moved to Ohio).
Turns out he was busy with a girl and decided not to chill with my friends and I, which we sacrificed dredg for! So we got pissed as fuck at him (of course we forgave him).
Anyway, to make this related to NEWS AND UPDATES, I would like some of you to send me your own and original dredg concert reviews, and I'll post them in the INTERVIEW and ARTICLES section of the site (Make sure to mention the date, city, and venue). I will also add some fresh interviews as well. If you have your own pictures of dredg (or interviews), some you took at concerts or where ever, please email me them with your name so you can be credited, same goes for the concert review. (peter@resolentband.com)
LASTLY!!! The dredg question contest thing is due by June 27th! That's next Friday! Head over to the message board or click here to ask your question!
04/25/03: Its been way over a month since i last updated anything, seems like 2 weeks, hmmm... ???? hehe anyway...
DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR DREDG????? IF SO, CLICK HERE!
i just updated the "dates" section, yes dredg will be back touring in America. On the later dates, bands such as: codeseven, S.T.U.N., and Strata will be joining them.
I dont know how long ago MTV.com updated their dredg page, but they added some new pictures that were taken in March. Click Here to check 'em out.
03/30/03: I added some new articles... Check 'em out. Also here's an old Trapt interview, the lead singer talks about Gavin and Mark...
soulineyes: Who are some of your favorite bands right now?
Chris: The Used, Blindside and dredg.
Soulineyes: dredg is from the same hometown as you right?
Chris: Yeah, the singer of dredg is like my best friend. I played pop warner football with their guitar player. The other guys I know really well too. We just used to hang out and party and play shows together and all that shit.
To read the whole interview click here
03/18/03: Sno-Core is almost over, but what does the band think about the tour? Well I asked Drew, and he said that he is having a lot of fun and that he's met new friends on the tour (other band's, etc.).
I know its nothing BIG, but I just wanted to update something here...
Also, I'm in a band, we're called Resolent. I dunno if you guys will dig us or not, but I thought, since this site is growing, why not promote a bit? hehe... www.resolentband.com. Thanks.
03/10/03: It's 11:20pm. I just got back from the Vic Theatre. My friend and bandmate Frank and I saw dredg, Hot Water Music, Glassjaw, and Sparta. We caught up with dredg again, and I personally gave the music video for 'Of the Room' to Drew. I sent it out in mail, but the tour already started so they didn't have a chance to see it. Anyway they played great like always, and I got the DVD that everyone has been complaining about (The DVD wasn't available at previous shows). The DVD came free with the purchase of any dredg item. Mark gave me a free copy of the DVD, but I gave it to Frank cuz I already had one. Well im tired, im gonna slumber in minutes... Oh yea, it's my friend Dan's birthday tomorrow, so Happy Birthday to him, if it wasn't for him I probably would've never heard of dredg (Three Years Ago)...
MORE DVD INFO:
02/23/03: Welcome back! DREDGMUSIC 2.0 is finished! I hope you guys like the new look better than the old one. I know that the lay-out is the same, but it looks better I think! Keep on a look out for some changes within the next couple of weeks!
01/27/03: Good news! www.dredgmusic.com has now been added to the link section of DREDG's OFFICIAL WEBSITE!!!! It's about time! Thank's to Drew!
01/24/03: Here's some shots from the OF THE ROOM music video...
01/23/03:Okay the video for OF THE ROOM is finished, and it's on its way to California for the band DREDG to see! So hopefully they will like it. I think the video is bad ass and I will admit that I am proud of the video and the amount of work I put into it. I will try to upload the music video for you guys sometime soon, hopefully. 01/17/03: Sorry for the lack of updates... Okay the video for "OF THE ROOM" should be finished by tomorrow. I will send it to the band first and see what they think of it, and then I will post it online for you guys to check out! The video shows the band playing, but you cant get a clear shot of their face. Theres also a story to the video. Theres this still character with red eyes, who is lying in a corner of a room. While he is lying, things, like furniture, tv set, etc. leave the room on it's own. It's pretty trippy. At the end theres of course, a surprise. And theres CGI involved with the video, not clay like mentioned before. Also, if you havent heard already... dredg is on this years sno-core tour with Sparta, Glassjaw, and Hot Water Music. 11/28/02:Happy Thanksgiving to all. Now for some exciting news. I will be making a music video for 'Of the Room' with original footage of the band performing live at the Fireside in Chicago. This will not be the official music video for it unless of course the band likes it, but its more for a school project. I have many idea's in my head right now. If you would like to see the first music video that I did, then go to 8thdayband.com. I've done only two music videos. I am happy to say that dredg will be my third band to do. If you have any idea's please post at the message board. I will be reading them, also leave your email address so I can email you if I like your idea(s) - You will be credited: message board 11/27/02: In Pieces have dropped off the tour due to two band members leaving the band (personal problems). The tour will go on, so don't worry, you won't miss dredg!
11/08/02: Today is my birthday and as I predicted... The dates did indeed change for dredg + codeseven tour. Check the tour page out for the latest dates. Also check out the video for "Same Ol' Road" 10/29/02:My buddy and I interviewed Drew back in August and finally I have it up in the downloads section. The quality really bites and it's hard to understand whats going on because of the background noise, but I think it's worth the listen and theres some interesting questions. Some parts are funny too... I will post the interview in text format soon. 10/28/02:Some shows have been changed. There seems to be confusion with some of the original dates with Codeseven. I'm not sure, but it seem's as though all the late fall dates are now being re-scheduled.
10/16/02: The non-limited version of 'El Cielo' is a jewel case that looks like the cover of the booklet and is black. (thanks to drew) 10/16/02: EX-120 MINUTES HOST and FARMCLUB.com HOST, MATT PINFIELD LOVES DREDG!!!!... I met Matt Pinfield last night in Chicago (he was with Mindless Self Indulgence) and I asked him about what he thinks about MTV right now. He said that MTV sucks! (God bless this man) I then asked him if he has heard of dredg (since supposedley he knew everything about every band) and he sure did know of dredg. Infact he had many kind words to say. He said that dredg is incredible and that he really digs the European E.P. 'Extended Play for the Eastern Hemisphere' (favorite song: THE SYMBOL SONG). He hasn't picked up 'El Cielo' yet, but I urged him to pick up a copy ASAP! He's really a cool guy, fun guy to talk with. "LITTLE JIMMY URINE is really a nutty guy." 10/09/02: The 16th track from EL CIELO, 'The Canyon Behind Her' was incorrectly cut on the advanced CD-R. There should have been a 17th track to complete 'The Canyon Behind Her', unfortunetly we lost ONE track by dredg! Who knows, maybe they will reprint EL CIELO with the correct tracking? 10/09/02: Okay here is my review of EL CIELO!!!: It's been about a two-year wait, and the wait is definitely worth it. So I picked up a limited edition copy of 'El Cielo' and listened to it with few of my buddies at my house for a "dredg listening party". 'El Cielo' is easier to categorize than their previous effort 'Leitmotif', but 'El Cielo' proves that dredg is still artistic and different than most of today's music. Sure, the 'Leitmotif' sound will be missed, but the "new" sound is a giant step forward and a very inspirational one too. This album clearly shows the musical range of dredg and the developing growth as well. Some song highlights are: (first single) 'Same Ol' Road', 'Sanzen', 'Triangle', 'Of the Room', 'The Canyon Behind Her', well basically the whole album is a highlight! Any way, 'Same Ol' Road' the first actual song from the album, definitely has a different sound compared to 'Leitmotif' and this is a track when Drew's bass lines really shine. Let me just point out that 'Leitmotif' was recorded back in 1999, so it's been a while. dredg definitely progressed in their style and for those disappointed in this album, just remember that times change and that music does too. If everything sounds the same then music will go nowhere (like today basically, but dredg has moved on and is the closest thing to being the "Messiah" of today's music). I really enjoyed hearing different cultural and spiritual sounds, although dredg is not a religious band at all. 'Triangle' is a good example. It has a Middle Eastern sound that mixes well with more of a modern rock sound; and it bounces to a different cultural sound. 'Elephant in the Delta Waves' an intermission track, has the Middle Eastern sound as well, and 'Walk In the Park' is possibly the best intermission track on this album. The colorful piano being played with the violin is a definite treat. 'Reprise' yet another intermission, first sounded like a remix version of 'Same Ol' Road', but it expands to a nice mellow acoustic guitar being playing. Then all of a sudden, it happens... 'Of the Room' possibly this years best song, is still well preserved even though it has been on the Internet for over a year! It sounds just as powerful as the first listen. 'The Canyon Behind Her' is another powerful song with slick bass lines and wonderful lyrics. The choral at the end of this song will leave you in awe and it gave me a weird tingly feeling in my body when I heard it.
What interest me the most about this album were the time changes and the transitions (the structure). Like 'Leitmotif' the transitions are still magical. The beautiful interludes are still there, instead of Movement # what ever, it's now creatively called a Brushstroke. Some things that stick out on this album are: Gavin’s voice, Dino's progressive styled drumming, and some memorable bass riffs by Drew. The guitar play by Mark is very creative and clever and it's really unbelievable how the instruments are played together as if dredg is a big orchestra, but the many talents are put into just four people. Definitely the years best, and with the remaining time left in 2002, it'll be hard to match up to 'El Cielo'. -Peter Cho
