Fallingwater

Mill Run, Pennsylvania

July 17, 2002
Fallingwater is one of many homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright during his lifetime. This one however is his most famous. This is because it was built over a waterfall. Completed in 1935 as a weekend getaway for a wealthy Pittsburgh family, the house was first opened for public tours in 1963. Bessie instantly recognized the outside of the house from postcards and from books. As an avid reader, Bessie had studied up on Fallingwater before our visit. Several of the pictures you see here were taken accross the river at the scenic lookout, this is the location where the most famous Fallingwater pictures are taken. Bessie then moved in closer for a better view. You can see that the outside of the house is made of reinforced concrete and stone that was quarried nearby in the hills. The house blends so well into the landscape that it seems to be growing out of the hillside. Finally, Bessie was allowed up on the second story balcony where she rested for a while on a glass table. She enjoyed the view up here and the peaceful sound of the water going over the falls - if only all the darned tourists would go away!
