SETUP USING A CATHEAD AND THE FIXED STEADY
When long lengths of irregular shaped work pieces require turning, drilling or boring a cathead or barrel band is a necessary. The steady's points make contact on the centre portion of the cathead and the bolts used to set the work concentric. In extreme cases, it is sometimes necessary to produce a temporary centre in one end of the work. The work is then supported on this centre and the cathead transferred to the chuck end of the work to simply setting up the cathead. The work is then removed from the chuck (complete with cathead), the work turned around in the lathe. The end with the temporary centre hole gripped in the chuck and a permanent centre drilled in its opposite end with the fixed steady supporting the work in the cathead.
