Teeing Off - SINGH ENDS ON HIGH NOTE 2. Pro Report - 2004 Results 3. Quote Of The Week TEEING OFF SINGH ENDS ON HIGH NOTE Vijay Singh did not let the last hours of the 2004 PGA Tour trickle away without leaving a reminder just whose year this was. Ripping off a final-round 5-under 65, Singh jumped from 16th to ninth place at the Tour Championship, giving him 18 top-10 finishes in 29 events. That made for 36 top-10 show- ings in two years, the most since Tom Kite's reign of 36 in 1981-82. With a $180,000 check, his final winnings of $10,905,166 shattered Tiger Woods' four-year-old mark of $9,188,321. His nine victories were the most in one season since 1950, when Sam Snead won 11. "It would have been nice to get 10 wins, but I'll take nine," Singh said. "You don't look at it that way. Ten wins is a dream year. It hasn't happened in some 50 years." He finishes the year leading the Tour in birdies (484, second-most in history) and 64 rounds in the 60s. He also tied Geoff Ogilvy for the most eagles (17). "Everybody looks up at me and congratulates me every- where I go. That's a big surprise," he said. "There's a lot more people with their eyes on me than before. As for winning so many times, they want to see good golf and they come and watch me. So that makes me happy." Vijay Singh finished the year with 484 birdies, second-most in history. He won $10,905,166 on the season. ------------------------------------------------------------ FULL SIZE (3' x 5') AMERICAN FLAG Normal Price: $19.99 LIQUIDATION SPECIAL: $2.99 We are pleased to announce that we have found Full-Size 3'x5' American flags available at liquidation prices... never sold before at these low prices. All For The Love Of The Game" ------------------------------------------------------------ Take a moment to answer GopherCentral's Question of the Week: Do you believe that the present Israeli espionage case warrants Congressional hearings? http://www.takepolls.com/21st/quest.asp?aid=18158 Question of the Week ------------------------------------------------------------ IN THIS ISSUE: 1. Teeing Off -Long bunker shot quite a misunderstood shot 2. Pro Report - COURSES FACE A DAUNTING CLEANUP 3. Quote Of The Week TEEING OFF Long bunker shot quite a misunderstood shot It is often said that the long bunker shot is "the toughest shot in golf," but it would be more accurate to call it the "the most misunderstood shot in golf." Most golfers faced with a long bunker shot do exactly what they shouldn't do. They swing harder than they normally would for the distance at hand, they change how much sand they take behind the ball (hitting nearer the ball), and they try to carry the ball all the way to the hole. These mistakes lead to inconsistent results at best and complete flubs at worst. Swing with a smooth tempo and allow the ball to run. Instead, your goal should be to: (1) Take the same amount of sand, (2) swing with a smooth tempo, and (3) run the ball to the hole. The adjustments you should make are demonstrated by the golfer in the photos below. His goal is to hit a 50- yard sand shot that lands on the front of the green and runs to the hole. Again, you should not try to hit the sand nearer to the ball than normal for a long bunker shot. Stick with the same amount of sand you normally take and do not add more "effort" than normal with the hands and arms. ------------------------------------------------------------ NEVER Miss A Cellular Call Again Introducing the Bunny Flashing Cell Phone Chain for F-R-E-E Are you one of those types that always seems to miss phone calls on your Cell Phone? There's been a redesign on many of your South Florida courses, courtesy of Hurricane Frances. Whether it was the storm surge that transformed Palm Beach Par 3 into a huge lake with 18 mounds barely visible (they're the greens), or the 200 fallen pine trees at Loblolly Pines Golf Club in Hobe Sound that have taken the bite out of the doglegs, Florida golfers will find radically changed golf courses. Whenever it is they get to play them again. "We've lost a lot of key trees that shape the doglegs," said Rick Whitfield, Loblolly's director of golf. "And we've got four fairways that are cover- ed with orange sand that blew out of the waste areas. It's like we've moved 20,000 cubic yards of dirt. It's unbelievable. I've never seen anything like it." Nobody else has, either. The first hurricane to strike this area in Eastern Florida in about 75 years will leave a lasting mark on the self-proclaimed Golf Capital of the World. While it's impossible to estimate the total damage -- golf course operators in the hardest-hit areas in Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River counties have had difficulty even reaching their courses, or being reached by phone -- the destruction is expected to be in the millions of dollars. This much seems obvious: Golf courses closest to the coastline, or north of where the eye made landfall or that have tree-lined fairways aren't going to be open for play any time soon. The most aptly named course these days is Lost Tree Club in North Palm Beach, which sustained major damage. (Any course with the word "Tree" in its name likely didn't fare well.) ------------------------------------------------------------ The 3D CRYSTAL COLLECTION A Magnificent Explosion of Light and Color Using the latest in LASER TECHNOLOGY each solid crystal block has been precisely etched to finest detail to show a beautiful 3D image.
