Some Of The Less Common And More Easily ConfusedCichlids

Now we're starting to get away from the more well know and easier cichlids. These are some of the more ucommon and more easily confused fish. Some look like other breeds, some actually have the same common name as other breeds. You have to watch closely to stay inside family lines,so there is no cross breeding becuase generally that is not well liked with most fish breeders.Besides it is always best to follow a lineage and keep it as close to pure as you can it makes your fish worth more.

The Midas Cichlid

Otherwise known as the red devil and the name says alot! It is a tank bustin little devil. It can reach about 12 inches and can kill anything it wants. This is cichlasoma citrinellum wich also has a striped kind same name but this is not the true red devil it's just been called red devil so much it has been so nick named. The true red devil is named cichlisoma labiatum and has much brighter color and has bigger lips. In either case just be sure of what you have and make positvely sure that it breeds only with the same kind. The striped midas I talked about earlier is interesting I have 2 right now that started out striped and ended up losing there stripes at sexual maturity. It was very interesting. If anyone has more on the striped citrinellum please email me with whatever you information you may have.

The Texas Cichlid

Hrychthys Carpintes(scientific name). This particular picture is of a green texas or pearlscale cichlid wich is not the same as the true texas cichlid. This is the herichthys carpintes version and the true texas is herichthys cyanoguttatus. The true texas is much more drab and not as well colored, much lighter colored. This fish can get to 12 inches or so. It is also a very good tank mate for almost all of these cichlids as long as it's not to big.As I said before keep them in species tanks to keep from crossing especially if you have both types.

The Blue Acara

Aequidens Pulcher(scientific name). These fish are common about 8 inches, but not much bigger. They are really cool and get very pretty colors, blues especially. It is always confused(at least around here) with the green terror as juveniles. The main difference is the black stripe that runs through the acara's eye does not run through the green terrors eye.The blue acara's scientific name is Aequidens Pulcher. The Green terrors scientific name is Aequidens Rivulatus.Make sure of what you have and treat it accordingly.Green terrors are slightly greener and much more aggresive.
