Please Help The Animals At Miami-Dade Animal Control

This page is dedicated to the thousands of dogs & cats that are put-to-sleep each year because they were not adopted as well as to the hundreds of dogs & cats who are awaiting their fate at Miami-Dade County Animal Control.

Something has to be done to help these poor defenseless animals. Wesley & I, as well as many others, are committed to doing something about this disgusting "shelter". Letters, Emails, Phone Calls and Faxes have been sent to Miami-Dade County as well as the newspapers and media. We will not stop until something is done and these animals are treated humanely. They cannot speak for themselves, and we are speaking for them.

Thank you to everyone who cares so much to sign this petition. This petition will help aid in our attempts to have something done about this "shelter". Your signatures & your comments mean so much to all of us. Thank You

Miami-Dade Animal Control & Public Works Department,7401 NW 74 Street, Miami, FL 33166 (East of the Palmetto Expressway) (305)-884-1101 x229 (front desk). The shelter's hours are 11am-7pm Monday thru Friday & 12noon-5pm Saturday and Sunday.

This is a high KILL SHELTER, these animals are put to sleep(euthanized)DAILY.

A surrendered dog(meaning someone brought in the animal)can be euthanized as soon as the following day.

An impounded dog(caught by Animal Control) is held for (at least)5 days for their owners to "claim them". Dogs with tags are held for a minimum of 10 days for the shelter to locate & contact their owners.

During the 5 or 10 day waiting period, anyone interested in the dog can put their name on a waiting list. The dog will become available for adoption after the 5 days. The waiting list goes by the order of the people's names (first come, first serve). If a dog's owner does not claim them & there is no one on the waiting list, the dog will be euthanized.

The conditions of the "shelter" are horrible. Horror strikes your eyes & nose when you walk into this "shelter". The lobby is really nice, cold and you ask the employees up front about the animals they have for adoption. Their response? "Follow the blue paw prints on the floor." "What?" you answer. "Paw Prints?" As they point out the blue pawprint stickers on the floor and tell you that these will lead you into the "back". Okay, so you follow the pawprints, go through some double doors and then Wham! All of a sudden you smell this horid stench. As you cover your mouth & try not to gag, you continue back into the kennels. You're faced with one long corridor with little rooms. You don't know where to start looking and you can't find an employee to help you. So you start to look around. This is what you see: There are 5 x 7 runs with either one or two dogs together (not neccessarily the same breed). There are small stackable metal crates that housed small dogs or puppies (not neccessarily the same breed). Then there are some 8x10 kennel runs with 5 or 6 sometimes more dogs in there. And of course, they aren't house together with their same breed either). The cats and kittens are in a separate "little room" and in stackable crates ontop of each other. As you pass by each cage or kennel run you look into the sad eyes of the animals, you see ticks & fleas covering their poor little faces, you see dogs sitting in their own feces or vomit, you see every single animal without water (We've been there at all hours of the day and have yet to see food bowls either). There are no other words to describe this "shelter" except Animal Neglect & Cruelty.

Please take a moment and take a look at Miami-Dade Animal Control's webpage. Look at the pictures of these poor animals who need our help. Look into their eyes and read their silent plea for help. These are just maybe 20-30 dogs out of the 300-400 that are at the shelter daily.

Please sign the petition below. Currently, we have individuals & rescue organizations writing letters, emails and faxes to the various county officials and media in hopes of getting this "shelter" exposed. Our goal is to get the "shelter" revamped & have better care provided for these animals. Please sign the petition & help us win the fight against Miami-Dade Animal Control. We need your support.

Please email us with questions or comments or if you want to know how you can get involved and make a difference.
