For all the victories that the railroad has scored against nature over its history, nature unfortunately scores one from time to time.

Whigham, GA; September 1998. 8331 was in the lead of the local, when it ran over this bridge. The crew got off alright while the engine remained suspended on the 2 rails with nothing under but hot and humid air. The Hi-railer had just gone through to check the minimum damage that Hurricane George had inflicted the railroad in the area on the Monday. But on Wednesday, an outer band came back over South Georgia and dumped about 5 inches of rain in about 45 minutes, right after the Hi-railer had gone through. When the maintenance crew went to get the engine the 2 rails collapsed and here went a fine piece of machinery down the creek.
