Blood Services: The American Red Cross Blood Services holds blood drives on Main Post once a quarter.  Contact the Red Cross Office for the date of the next blood drive. Turnouts for the Blood Drives have been sparse. Army Emergency Relief   (AER)  Lionel Grant, AER Manager,  545-3530

·         AER can assist with Essential repairs on a Soldier’s POV. In addition, AER can assist with Routine Maintenance; oil changes, tune ups, replacement of brakes or tires: Soldiers deploying should ensure their spouse is left with a safe and properly operating POV.

·         A spouse of a deployed Soldier may receive AER assistance with a Power of Attorney.

ERP JOB STRATEGY WORKSHOP – The Employment Readiness Program assists spouses and children of active and retired military and DoD civilians, veterans, and retirees with opportunities to seek employment on and off post.  The weekly Job Vacancy List averages more than 650 openings each week.  These jobs include Civil Service, Non-appropriated Fund, contract, and local businesses.  This service is provided by a Job Strategy Workshop class held on scheduled on August 10, 2006 and August 24, 2006 from 0830-Noon.  Following this class is an optional opportunity to meet with employment agencies and local businesses, and to obtain information on how to apply for each job listed in that week’s Job Vacancy List.  Pre-registration is required and application forms are available at Army Community Service, Building 2624, Soldiers’ Plaza. ***Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP)  (Marsha Collins, EFMP Manager, 545-7517)

·         The ACS Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a mandatory enrollment program for special needs family members.  Enrollment in the program does not hurt a Soldier’s career, but assists military personnel divisions in considering the medical and educational special needs of the family member in the assignment process.  Enrollment is necessary if the Soldier’s spouse or child meets the following:  Asthma, Mental health diagnosis, High-risk pregnancies, Cancer, Attention Deficit Disorder, Heart Conditions, Diabetes, a medical condition requiring a specialist (above the level of a Family Practice doctor), a child with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or Individual Family Support Plan (IFSP).

·         Program enrollment allows Army personnel to consider the documented medical and special education needs of family members in the assignment process.  When possible, Soldiers are assigned to an area where the medical and special education needs of exceptional family members can be met.

·         Individual Education Plan Workshop (IEP) will be Tuesday, September 5, 2006, Building 359, 9:30 a.m. - 12 noon.  This workshop is free and will provide valuable information to parents and professional about IEP development.  For more information call, ACS EFMP, 545-5521.

Family Advocacy Program (FAP) (Rebecca Welch, FAP Manager, 545-7517).

·        FAP is a specialized program that emphasizes prevention, education, prompt reporting, investigation, intervention, and treatment on family issues.  All prevention and education is handled through ACS FAP located in Bldg. 241, Baltzell Avenue (next to the Infantry Museum).   The program provides a variety of services to Soldiers and families to develop their relationship skills and improve their quality of life.  Seminars and briefings are available to you, your unit, or Family Readiness Group.  The FAP Training Specialist can be reached at 706-545-6957 to schedule classes.  Educational materials to military families are always available and FREE.  Victim Advocacy and Respite Care are coordinated through the FAP Victim Advocate at 706-545-4013.  Victim Advocacy services include, but are not limited to, crisis intervention, emotional support, establishing a safety plan, referrals to services available in the community (counseling, shelter placement, legal, etc.)  Respite care provides temporary child care for the purpose of relieving parental stress and to provide a nurturing and developmentally appropriate environment.  Respite care can be provided for families when enrolled in individual counseling, couples counseling, parenting classes, or support groups.  Respite care will not be used in place of foster care or abandoned children. The FAP New Parent Support /First Steps Program, located in Martin Army Community Hospital (706-544-2020), provides emotional support, parent education, referrals to community resources, and home visits to parents with newborns; thereby helping develop healthy family relationships to reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect.  Family Advocacy’s newest program is The Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program which is responsible for ensuring that Soldiers receive training and education on sexual assault and victims are protected and assisted by victim advocates.  For further information on sexual assault you may contact the FAP Sexual Assault Coordinator at 706-545-8740 or the 24-hour on call number at 706-566-7393.

 

 

***Mobilization/Deployment Program (Perry Tripp, 545-2449)                                                                

·         The ACS Mobilization/Deployment Program has relocated to building 2633 and we are proud to announce that we now have an Operation READY Room designed to provide educational materials regarding pre-deployment, deployment and post deployment issues.  We invite you to stop by the Operation READY Room, bldg. 2633, located in Soldiers Plaza, Monday thru Friday 8:15 a.m.-4:30 p.m..  For more information on the Operation READY Room, please contact Perry Tripp at 545-2449.

·         Family members with deployed sponsors are eligible for five (5) hours of free childcare per child, per month at Tot Town.  Cards for this childcare service can be obtained from some FRG leaders or ACS, Building 2633.  Children must be registered with CYS to be eligible. 

·         Family Readiness Group Trainings:  August 24, 2006, 9:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

·         Key Caller Trainings:  August 29, 2006, 9:00 a.m.-12 noon.

·         Rear Detachment Commander (RDC) training:  August 17, 2006,  8:00 a.m.-5:00 pm.

***Financial Readiness Program (FRP)  (Ann Pratcher, FRP Manager, 545-7517),

·        Army Community Service Center, Financial Readiness Program along with the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate will be presenting another series of classes on how to make the best deal on your next car purchase.  The next classes will be held on August 10 and 24, 2006, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, in Building 359.  You will learn who will profit from the sale, how to buy the car the right way, how to shop for a new or used vehicle, how to negotiate the right way, and more.  Pick a date and call for a reservation at 545-7517.   The classes are open to anyone interested in learning how to make your next or first car purchase the best ever.  Remember, the money you save will be your own.

·        Bldg 2624, offers education, information and assistance in consumer issues, financial planning, family budgeting (relocation), and debt management matters. Classes/briefings include: Sure-Pay, Checking Account Management, Budgeting, Debt Liquidation, Credit Management, Insurance, Investments, Major Purchases, Community Resources, Thrift Savings Plan, and Planning for Deployment, Transition, Retirement, or PCS. Family Advocacy, First Steps/New Parent Support Program, (Carolyn Harris, Manager, 544-2020)

·        First Steps provides parents of newborns with support, education and referrals to community resources. First Steps volunteers visit new parents at Martin Army Community Hospital and provide them with the colorful and popular “Our New Baby” developmental calendar, information on infant growth and development, support, and follow-up phone calls during the first few months of life to make sure both babies and parents are doing well. ·        Breastfeeding Moms Support Group meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm, Room 360, 3rd floor of Martin Army Community Hospital.  If you are interested in attending, please call 544-2020 for date of next meeting, leave your name and phone number on our answering machine.  Babies are welcome to attend.

 

Relocation Readiness Program  ( 545-0403/4485)

·         NEWCOMER FAMILY ORIENTATION:    The Newcomers Orientation is on August 11, 2006, 8:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m. in the Supper Club of the Officers’ Club.  REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED, call 545-0403/4485.  Free childcare is provided; reservations for childcare must be made in advance by calling Tot Town Child Development Center at 689-8698.  The orientation will begin with briefings of on-post agencies followed by a bus tour of Fort Benning and Uptown Columbus.  A light lunch will be provided, compliments of our Commissary.

Army Volunteer Corps Coordinator (545-7517)

·        The Army Volunteer Corps Coordinator (AVCC) is located in Building 2624, Soldiers' Plaza.

The Soldier and Family Life Consultant Program,    Larry Meisel,   Rae Lynn Nettles  545-2158 

The consultants are licensed civilian professionals who can help when a Soldier or an immediate family member is feeling stressed by: separation issues, relationship conflict, parenting difficulties, depression, anxiety, grief, anger, and combat stress.

The consultant’s role is to provide immediate and short term intervention, education, and skill building in a supportive manner. All services are totally free, confidential*, and career-safe (*Of course if someone is a danger to oneself or others the consultant has a legal duty to warn.)

Here at Fort Benning there are two part-time consultants, a male and a female: Larry Meisel and Rae Lynn Nettles. They are available throughout the week and into the evenings and weekends as requested.

The consultants are located at Army Community Service, Bldg 2624 in Soldiers’ Plaza, but they will meet a Soldier or family member on post or in the community, at a location that is comfortable for the Soldier or family member. The Fort Benning Army Learning Center offers free tutoring assistance to Soldiers and Adult Family Members in Algebra II, writing, reading, preparation for CLEP and SAT test.  The Tutor is located in building 4, room 32A, (west wing), the Multi-use Learning Facility.  Hours of service are 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. ARMY SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROGRAM (ASAP) 545-1138

Prevention education is a primary focus of the program.  In addition to counseling and referral services, the ASAP staff brings prevention programs and drug/alcohol awareness information to both on and off post schools, as well as civic organizations.   A wide range of drug/alcohol information classes are available, not only to Soldiers, but to family members, individuals, groups or organizations.  Our Fort Benning ASAP has the motto "The Power of Choice!"  - use your power of choice!  Call or stop by the ASAP to arrange a class or briefing for yourself or your organization.  We are located on Baltzell Avenue, next to the Infantry Museum, Building 241 (Miller Hall).  The hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. -4:30 p.m.  Our telephone number is 545-1138.  Counseling and referral for substance abuse can be accessed by calling 545-8362.

·         The Main Post Furniture Store is set to open September 2006

·         There will be listings of required school supplies for various schools available at the PX soon.  

·         Some problems with AAFES concessionaires have been noted, e.g. vendors who do not tend their booths.  If you have problems with any AAFES concessionaire, please refer it to AAFES management.

Commissary

·         A change in produce provider will take place August 1, 2006.

·         The cost of an item at the commissary is not controlled by the local commissary.

·         The vendor for the plants at the commissary will replace any plants that are bought and die within 2 weeks.

As always, Mr. Hensley asks that any customer service issues be brought to management’s attention while you are still in the store if possible.

·         If you are an active duty military service member, or spouse/dependent of an active duty service member you may qualify for the Georgia Hope Grant.  The Georgia Hope Grant pays for tuition, some fees and a book allowance up to $100.00.

·         You must be stationed at a military installation and reside in the state of Georgia.  Also you must be enrolled in one of our certificate or diploma programs.

·         Civilian personnel may also qualify for the Georgia Hope Grant.  You must be a legal resident of Georgia at least one year prior to enrollment.  You must submit a valid Georgia Driver's License or Georgia State ID card.  The exam date on these documents must date back one year from enrollment.

***PORT COLUMBUS CIVIL WAR NAVAL MUSEUM   

***  August Cool History- Naval Expeditions- August 5-6, 2006- During the war, many naval expeditions were sent off                     

        to capture enemy ships, destroy salt works, or even to find water. Visit the museum to experience first hand how

        naval expeditions were planned, conducted, and concluded.  You will see the planning involved in attacking the

        USS Water Witch and the results of a US Navy raid into Confederate territory.

Benning coordinator, Joe Emehiser is located at Soldier’s Plaza in Building 2613 and the Columbus Campus is located off Macon Road in Cross Country Plaza (By the Longhorn Steak House).  GMC offers Associate of Arts and Associate of Science Degrees in Behavioral Science, Business Administration, Criminal Justice, Education, General Studies, and Pre-Nursing.

·         Georgia Military College (GMC) at Columbus has an Articulation Agreement with Columbus State University (CSU).  The Articulation Agreement facilitates the transfer of students who have graduated from GMC with an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science degree to the junior year level at CSU.  Please see either a GMC or CSU representative for further information.

·         New applications are now being accepted.  Application fees have been waived for Active Duty Soldiers.  Fall Registration is September 7.  Drop/Add is September 11-13.  Classes begin on September 7.  Soldiers may register for the fall term in the GoArmyEd portal from July 17 through September 13.

The Ft. Benning Parent to Parent Cadre is excited to offer the following workshops to the groups of Ft Benning, whether it is your school’s PTO, your unit’s FRG, or any other group that you may be involved in!  We are ready to bring this information to your group, wherever and whenever you meet! 

·         Building Blocks to Literacy: We will discuss with parents the importance of strong early reading skills and discuss ways in which parents can help their children become better readers. 

·         Ducks in a Row:  This Kindergarten/ School Readiness workshop will address the ways in which parents can help their young child be prepared to be successful in school. 

·         Refrigerator Art or Artifact: We will discuss with parents the need to create a portfolio for their child as they move from school to school as well as determine which documents your child will need to smooth the transition for their child. 

·         Roadblocks to Transition: We will highlight some of MCEC’s vast array of tools and resources, discuss with parents some of the common “roadblocks” to transition, and give an overview of our upcoming workshops. 

·         Chart Your Course:  This middle school-geared workshop is designed to help 7th-12th graders build strong academic backgrounds in order to prepare them for life after high school graduation. 

·         High School Almost Down & College Bound:  Suitable for parents of high school students, this workshop strives to convey the importance of preparing for college while in high school, and goes a step further by explaining the college application, admissions, and financial aid processes. 

·         Academic Connections During Deployment:  This workshop teaches parents how to enhance communication between a deployed solider and his/her children throughout the school year.

Commander’s Cup Unit Level Golf Competition

U.S. Army Soldier Show

This 90-minute production is made up entirely of active duty Soldiers.  They will be performing a variety of music such as R&B, country, rock, Broadway tunes, oldies, patriotic songs and more!  Food and beverages will be available for purchase.  Admission and parking are FREE!

Do you need a place for your child before and after school?  The Before and After School Program provides care for K-5th grade.  Children may participate in various educational/recreational activities.  Breakfast and snacks are provided.  Fees are based on total family income.  Register now at the Central Registration Office, Bldg. 359 or call 545-2079/3605.
