Ten Lepers
One who returned
"And as he entered into a certain village, there met him 10 men that were lepers, which stood afar off. (17:12)

Location
  • On the way to Jerusalem from BethSaida, outside the Mount of Transfiguration, about 8 days out of Bethsaida
"And it came to pass as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee."
  • Healing takes place in a village of the Samaritans Luke 9:52

And sent messengers before his face: and they went into a village of the Samritans, to make ready for him.

(9:53 notes that they do not receive Him because his face "is set towards Jerusalem."-before the healing in Ch. 12)

  • When
  • After the healing of the man with Dropsy
  • After a discourse of Parables
  • After the healing of the demoniac
  • Type of Healing Leprosy
    The Request
  • Mercy, with healing implied

"And they lifted up their voices and said Jesus, Master, have Mercy on us." 17:13

    All request the healing.

  • Note: calling him 'Master' was a statement of faith, as was the cry for mercy.
  • Means of Healing, The Healing
  • Jesus commands obedience to the Torah

"And when he saw them he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the Priests.

Note: law of leprosy found in Leviticus 14:2-8.

  • Obedience is immediate as is the healing.
  • Outcome
  • the 10 Lepers are healed

And as it came to pass, they were cleansed. (17:14b)
  • Only one thankful.

"And one of them when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice, glorified God, And fell down at his feet, giving him thanks and he was a Samaritan.
  • People's Reaction The exact reaction is not described, but it must have been one of astonishment and amazement because the Pharisees turn to him with questions of when the Kingdom of God would come: no further mention is made of the healing, but it was radical and eminent enough for even the Pharisees to take note and think the Day of the Lord must be at hand. Ever the legalists they try to entrap.
  • fff.
  • Jesus' or Apostle's Teaching
  • Jesus remarks on only one thankful:

And Jesus answering said, Were there not 10 cleansed? but where are the 9? There are not found that returned to give glory to God , save this stranger.

-note: a healing of a non-Jew, one of a few.

  • Jesus commends faith

And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way thy faith hath made thee whole.
(note: 'being made whole', and that coming to life or health most of the time includes the directive 'arise'.
  • In teaching the Pharisees afterwards, Jesus expounds on the
    a)urgency of obedience, and
    to "remember Lot's wife".
    c) "...17:21 ...the Kingdom of God is within you"
  • 17:24: The coming of the Son of Man

Luk 17:24 For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one [part] under heaven, shineth unto the other [part] under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.

  • The suffering of Messiah and rejection by His own generation (i.e. race/genealogy, not meaning only the ''20 year genealogy, but the 'generation of the Jews
  • Luke 17:32 "Remember Lot's Wife" re: on the day of Tribulation
  • Luke 17:33 "Whosoever shall lose his life shall perserve it
  • The Rapture

Luk 17:34 I tell you, in that night there shall be two [men] in one bed; the one shall be taken, and the other shall be left. Luk 17:35 Two [women] shall be grinding together; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Luk 17:36 Two [men] shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.
  • The gathering of the eagles-Luke 17:37
  • Implications for Faith
  • As regards the healing, it was by faith, and it was immediate, by the command of the Savior's voice.
  • The gratitude, glorifying of God, and true 'turning around' comes only from 1/10th of the group: one leper, though all who view it are remarkably moved. Though this appears a non-Jewish group of lepers, the glory of God coming from a remnant is at least echoed.
  • Taken as a type and kind of cleansing from sin, with only a remnant grateful to God and followed by a discourse on the last days and the coming of the Son of Man, the healing of leprosy reflects the last days, the end time when the Lord returns for those he has redeemed. The Pharisees know the law: they know the signs from years of study, even the ones less than astute, and while they try at every hand to find fault, Jesus always has the sovereign answer to their cynicism. Jesus turns and remarks on the event implicitly of a called out remnant: two men in the field, one saved, one not, two women grinding , one saved, one not, two men in one bed, one taken one not.

He clarifies for the Pharisees that their idea of the Kingdom of Heaven is not perfect: it is not just a utopian earthy kingdom, with a Great King, but it is the reign of God, even then, a Kingdom with, in, around and through, a Temple built without hands. too cool. .

  • Cross-references & Other Critical Facts
  • Note: The Levitical Laws on Leprosy and the required showing to the priest of healed leprosy Lev 14. Leprosy though taking many forms is used throughout scripture as an analogy for sin, e.g. Miriam struck with leprosy for criticizing Moses' marriage to Tzipporah, or Uriah struck with leprosy for entering as a national king into the priest's exclusive office.
