David and Marsha Grady Family
Our HELTON Family

Marsha's second great-grandmother was Georgiana HELTON, daughter of Isaac M. HELTON and Nancy Mae MCKENZIE. Georgiana was born March 1858 in Alabama (probably Monroe County), and was married about 1884 to William Monroe BROWN. She died in 1928 - her burial place is unknown.

Georgiana was the granddaughter of William Joseph HELTON. William Joseph HELTON was born about 1799 in the Lancaster District of South Carolina. He is believed to have migrated to Monroe County, Alabama by the early 1800's, as his first marriage, to Elizabeth MOORE, is reported to have taken place there about 1822. He appears in the 1830 Federal Census for Alabama.

William Joseph and Elizabeth HELTON had nine children:
- Mary N. HELTON (born 5 Aug 1824 in Monroeville, Monroe County, Alabama; died 20 January 1853 in Camden, Wilcox County, Alabama); she married Chapman Levy CREIGHTON 30 Dec 1844 in Monroe County, Alabama.
- Rebecca HELTON (born 1826 in Monroe County, Alabama); she married Isaac G. MAXWELL 12 Jul 1848 in Monroe County, Alabama.
- William Joseph HELTON, Jr. (born 1828, Monroe County, Alabama); he married Mariam GRAHAM 18 Dec 1852 in Monroe County.
- Isaac M. HELTON (born 22 Nov 1831, Monroe County, Alabama; died 1929 in Monroe County, Alabama); Isaac married Nancy Mae MCKENZIE, daughter of Phillip and Elizabeth MCKENZIE, 28 Mar 1858 at the home of George Bradley in Monroeville, Alabama.
- Jeremiah HELTON (born 1835, Monroe County, Alabama; died 7 November 1886 in Tunnel Springs, Monroe County, Alabama); he married Martha M. SAWYER
- James Monroe HELTON (born 22 Jan 1837 in Monroe County; died 21 Dec 1919 in Monroe County, Alabama). James Monroe HELTON had at least four known wives.
- John Alexander HELTON (born 10 May 1839, Tunnel Springs, Alabama; died 6 Jun 1921 in Pollard, Escambia County, Alabama); he married Sarah Jane BOLLING 20 May 1866.
- Sarah J. HELTON (born 1842 in Monroe County; died 13 Jun 1867 in Monroe County).
- Thomas J. HELTON (born 1842 in Monroe County).

Elizabeth MOORE HELTON died of pneumonia following the birth of her last two children, Sarah and Thomas, who were twins. After her death, William Joseph married Mary Ann WHITE, daughter of Thomas WHITE and Elizabeth MCCAMMON, on 30 April 1843.

William Joseph and Mary HELTON had the following children: Henry Clay HELTON (1847-1898); Joseph White HELTON (1849-1927); Maryan G. HELTON BRADBERRY (1853-1929); M. Sophronia HELTON MCCLURE (1856-1897); and Jefferson D. HELTON (1861-1941).

Isaac M. HELTON and four of his brothers served in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. His application for Confederate Pension shows that he served as a Private in Company F, 36th Regiment. He was wounded at the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Tennessee on 25 November 1836. Muster roll for his regiment describes him as 5 ft. 10 in. tall, with fair complexion, blue eyes and light hair.

Isaac and his wife, Nancy Mae, are found in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses with their children living near his family in Monroe County, Alabama. There are some interesting discrepancies in their lives as recorded in later censuses. Nancy is believed to have died between 1911-1920 and there is no record of Isaac having married again after her death. However, the 1910 census lists Isaac with wife, Mary E., and one son, Kyle, age 18. This record indicates that "Mary E. HELTON" had born only one living child. By 1920, Isaac is living alone at age 88. This seems to indicate that Nancy Mae MCKENZIE HELTON may have died earlier (possibly as early as 1881) and that Isaac then married Mary E. (maiden name unknown) who bore him a son, Kyle. This has not been verified.

Isaac HELTON died about 1929 and is buried at Fountain Baptist Church Cemetery in Monroe County, Alabama.

Isaac and Nancy HELTON had thirteen children: Georgiana HELTON (1858-1928); Philmore HELTON (1859-?); William J. HELTON (1861-?); Isaac HELTON (1865-?); Sebastion HELTON (1866-?); Viola HELTON (1868-?); Louisa HELTON (1870-?); Harry HELTON (1871-?); Robert Edgar HELTON (1875-1947); Elizabeth HELTON (1876-?); Benson HELTON (1877-?); Siler HELTON (1879-?). As noted above, Isaac HELTON is believed to have a fourteenth child, Kyle HELTON (1882-?). There is also possibly another son, Kenneth R. HELTON.
