BeginningsThe Jackson 5 was formed in Gary, Indiana, comprising of the children of Joseph and Katherine Jackson. Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Michael and Marlon trained hard under the watchful eye of Joseph, going on to win talent shows and do gigs around their hometown. They were eventually brought to the attention of Motown, and successfully auditioned in 1968. Motown founder Berry Gordy promised the Jackson 5 three Number 1 records, and Motown more than delivered. I Want You Back, ABC, The Love You Save and I'll Be There all peaked at Number 1 on the Pop and R&B charts, one after the other. The Jackson 5 shot to fame across America and around the world. A major part of the J5's fame was due to the ages of the brothers, and Motown wanted to keep them that way - young, fresh teens. However, as Marlon and Michael grew noticeably older, Motown did not attempt hard enough to adapt the group's image. The brothers also wanted more creative freedom, but this was not given. As a result, Joseph (their father and manager) decided to sign the group with another record label that would allow his sons the freedom to grow and express themselves more. He got the deal he was looking for with Epic Records, but Jermaine, who was by that time married to Motown founder Berry Gordy's daughter, Hazel, chose to remain with Motown, saying that he stayed out of loyalty, because Motown had believed in the group. The group was also forced to discard the name "Jackson 5" which Motown fought over, and became known as "The Jacksons" under the Epic label. Since the group left Motown, various albums have been released under their name - mostly compilations and some previously unreleased material. There's not much else that can be done at this point in time. Since leaving Motown, the Jackson 5 have reunited on stage on various occasions. First was at the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever show in 1983, where Michael did the famous Billie Jean moonwalk. Then was the Victory tour in 1984. Most recently was the Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration - The Solo Years on September 7 and 10, 2001. What does the future hold? We'll all stay tuned! |
