The ideal season The best time for pond construction is in the spring. The plants could rest during the winter and have now sufficient strength to grow and thrive.
The size of the pond Surely you would like to have fun and enjoy your pond for a longer period. Therefore, you should calculate for your pond to be at least 10 m squared. Eg: a base of 3.20 x 3.20 m. Of this base, 1 to 2 m squared must be at least 1 meter deep. There are two reasons: 1.In extreme summer heat the fishes and other living beings can draw back to the cold bottom ground where the water is richer in oxygen. 2.To pass the winter, the best temperature for pond animals is +4 degrees C, in a depth of 70 cm your pond water has exactly these +4 degrees. The pond can freeze over, however, if it is too shollow. This is due to the fact that water with a temperatreu of +4 degrees is heavier than water with +1 degrees for example. For every 20 cm deep, the water is 1 degree C warmer.
Attention When using pond heaters, very warm layers of water can develop nearby. One reason for the fish dying in winter or spring is that the fish swims from its place with an ideal hibernation temperature of +4 Degrees C, into the upheated warm water layers.
Locations As to the location of the pond we recommend a place with a few hours of sunshine during the day. Do not build the pond near trees with heavy fall of leaves or conifers. The same applies to trees with a strong root formation. If you do have trees and you don't find a better location, then you should vertically erect stone slabs in the ground. In doing so you protect the pond against damage by the roots.
Finished pond or liner pond? Fishished plastic ponds and, above all, liner ponds have proved to be best and, therefore, succeeded. The liner is especially suitable, because it makes the construction of any pond shape possible, is easy to handle and also fulfulls without any problems - the very important requirement for a minimum depth of one meter. When buying a pond liner you should by all means quality more important than the price. A good liner, finally, can last up to 30 years. The pond liner should be protected against sun rays, ie UV-stabilized, frost resistant as well as harmless for fish and plants. You should also ask for a confirmation that the liner you bought in not manufactured with recycled materials.
Determining the size of the liner We would like to give you two proposals. 1.You prepare a sketch of the planned cross-section on paper. The best scale would be 1:50 ie 1 cm on sketch corresponds to 50 cm in reality. You need the depths of the pond pit, plant terraces, hollows and the projection of the edge which should be 70 cm all around. Add up the cm on the drawing and you will have the length and width of the liner. 2.Measurement by means of a string Lay the string along the length and the width through the finished excavated pit. After that you check the length of the string being used. In addition to these values you should take into account another at least 70 cm. This has to be done for two reasons. A) No liner can be evenly laid. B) If you have a sufficient projection of the liner, you can prevent the pond from being washed out from below or the liner from being drawn into the pond. However, before you start your calculation you continue reading on the topic first. Otherwise you might miss the many possibilities to create your pond.
