Bacchus

Bacchus was the Roman god of fertility, wine, and pleasure-seeking. This is evident by the glass of wine in Bacchus' left hand and with the appearant "head dress" that he is wearing made of leaves and other flowering plants showing his glory and splendor which symbolizes the manneristic paintings of the time of Caravaggio. Bacchus' muscles and brahn are representative of the Renaissance art in which the perfect man of the time had to have muscles to match his inquisitive mind. The grand fruit and large bottle of wine show his richness in life and everything that he could have if he just wished. The "temperature" of the painting is a temperate reddish and greenish tone. The off-center eyes as compared to the head facing to the viewer's right represents manneristic asymmetrical qualities. Next Picture
