David

The depiction of the David painted by Caravaggio is a very cruel drawing in which the young David is holding the head of the giant, Goliath. This young David is very flat and lacking muscle. He is holding, what appears to be, a sword in his right hand (viewer's left). Unlike Michelangelo's or Donatello's Davids, this young David is about twelve years old and is wearing clothes around the lower and upper parts of the body. The expression on David's face shows a very confident boy who is proud of the great feat he has accomplished. In his left hand he is holding a weary, and tired, Goliath's head. The temperature of the painting is dark and depressing one in which the whole thing looks black. Possibly showing how the struggle between David and Goliath took all day and all night until it was finished. Next Picture
