Death of the Virgin

The Death of the Virgin is Caravaggio's mst controversial painting. It is very controversial because it depicts the holy Virgin Mary dressed in red and looking feebly old and wrinkly. Everyone around her is mourning the loss of her and crying showing there own sentiments for her death. She still has a halo above her head while she is lying down, but she is underneath a large red curtain draping over her head. The deep, crimson curtain takes up nearly a third of the painting to show its significance and to make the Virgin seem unholy. Caravaggio started a war against the Roman Catholic Church with this painting, and perhaps started a revolution that could be called atheism. Next Picture
