FOREWORD: To all of you who are looking for Mr. Right, there ARE men of integrity online and you CAN find love online. BUT you must do it in a SMART manner or you're going to be terribly hurt. And you must do it in a SAFE manner. You must not only think of your own safety, but also the safety of any children living at home with you. The following advice, suggestions, web sites, and guidelines will help you to unmask the online players.

This material was compiled and written by MizSaraM@aol.com

UNMASKING THE PLAYERS:

NEVER divulge how you uncovered your player to be a player. We want to make it harder for them to con others, NOT make it harder for other women to also expose them. If your player demands to know how you found him out, just tell him "I have my sources" and refuse to say any more ... and let him wonder -- and worry.  heh   heh

When a player finds out that his comings and goings can be monitored thru the AOL member directory even if he has you blocked, or that his other screen names can be researched out, his usual course of action is to dump his profile(s). Some women put on their profiles 'No Profile, No Chat' which is a good policy to follow. No profile? Hmmmm, what is he hiding ... OR, better yet, whom is he hiding from?

The longer these players play 'the game', the more underhanded they become. In one story we received, the player sent a picture from a web site claiming he took the picture himself. Excerpt from that story:

One of the first things that absolutely stopped me in my tracks was an email he sent me with a picture of a marina HE HAD TAKEN on a lake somewhere outside of Denver.  He titled the attachment  and  I was fortunate to locate a web site for the same!!!  THE PICTURE ON THE WEBSITE WAS IDENTICAL TO THE PICTURE HE SENT ME!!!  It was even shot from the same  angle exactly. Below is the web site he used.

Beacon Landing Motel & Marina

And from another story:

Then he told me he was still going to get a divorce and went so far as to make up fake divorce papers...scan them...and send them to me...all signed!  Then he sent me a picture of the place he was moving into -- another lie, of course.

Story from a newspaper:

He stepped off the plane to be met by his beautiful Lisa. The first thing he discovered is: Lisa is actually a 57-year-old gray-haired woman who weighs almost 300 pounds (she sent him pictures of herself when she was 35 years old and much slimmer).

THE MORAL:
DO NOT automatically accept any pictures as being a true representation.

NOTE:  ALL THE BELOW SCENARIOS ARE NOT CONCLUSIVE
THERE CAN ALWAYS BE AN EXCEPTION

INTERNET FAKE ID'S ~~ FALSE PROFILES

If players find having 'no profile' works against them, then they will make up a phony profile with no location or a vague location. Some ludicrous stories you will hear in regard to not stating a location OR for not having a profile:

  • had witnessed something between members of the Mafia or etc. and had testified against them in court. As a result, was put into the Witness Protection Program.

  • works in a federal government job and thus cannot discuss his location OR job

  • works for the FBI or the CIA or the DEA, or Military Intelligence, etc. and is working undercover or is on a mission, etc. (These are the DUMBEST of stories. If you're on a mission or etc., no way would you be allowed to be gallivanting on the Internet.)

  • I'm in the process of a divorce and don't want my soon-to-be ex to be able to find me online, etc.

OR they may list a false city. A false location can be a really dumb mistake on their part because you can so easily trip them up. If you know of someone who lives in the same location, they can supply you with questions to ask for tripping him up. If not, use the below suggested questions for finding out if BOTH he and his profile are phonies.

Suggested questions to verify the city he says he lives in:

  • Ask him what's his favorite restaurant. If he "brb's" you with "I got another IM", or "I got a phone call", or "someone's at the door", etc., you can bet he's going to the web, or another source, to find the name of a restaurant. Or he may say he has to sign off and not sign back on until the next day, hoping the topic has been dropped. ASK HIM AGAIN. <grin> If he gives you a name, then ask him what type of cuisine they serve.
NOTE: How are you to know a restaurant by that name exists in that city? Let's say his profile says he lives in Denver. For non-AOLers, use a search engine to locate an informative web site on Denver. For AOLers: simply CLICK on Keyword at the top of your screen, TYPE in the blank: Denver. CLICK on GO. It will take you to a web site that lists everything about Denver: restaurants, golf courses, malls, etc.

    ~ OR ~

Use the below web site to find the restaurant name he gives you.

  • SMARTpages: The online yellow pages directory of business listings

If you have no luck, CLICK on 'more search options' and try those methods. Zip code is not necessary

IMPORTANT: Generally, you need to spell out the full city name, without any abbreviations (type Los Angeles instead of just LA, and type Mount Kisco instead of Mt. Kisco). You can type in the two-letter state abbreviation (OK), the full name of the state (Oklahoma), or the first few letters (Okla).

  • If he's a golfer, ask him which golf course he plays on. If he gives you the lame answer of "I play on all of them", DUH ... every golfer has a favorite course. Or if he fishes, what lake/river does he fish at? If he boats, where does he go boating and moor his boat? If he bowls, what bowling alley? You get the idea. Use the above methods to verify what he tells you.

  • Ask him what part of town he lives in ... north, east, south, west? Then ask him a trickier question: which mall he goes to for shopping? If he's single, then he has to shop for himself. Ask him if that mall is in the same part of town as he is. Was there any hesitation in answering? Did he give you a vague answer? Or did he 'brb' with "I got a phone call" or etc.
NOTE: if he wants to know why you're asking these questions, tell him you're coming to his area in a couple of months to visit an old friend and you want to know where to shop, what's a good restaurant, etc. If he asks the address of your friend, reply with "I really don't know you that well and it's not safe to give out real names or addresses of women over the internet." If the guy proves to be on the up and up, you can then give him the story that your trip is canceled because your friend got her long-awaited promotion and is being transferred to another city.

  • CLAIMS TO LIVE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY, says he's a bull fighter in Spain. A fabrication very easy to expose. Simply ask him what time it is in his country. Then use one of the below web sites to see if he gave you an accurate time. He should be able to give you an immediate answer by glancing at the time on his computer or watch. BUT, if there's a long pause before he answers, he probably used a web site to find the time. These sites use military time ... 10:23 means it's 10:23 a.m. But for 10:23 p.m., it's listed as 22:23.HELPFUL HINT: For civilian PM time, just subtract 12 from the time stated.

These web sites also gives the time in US cities. <wink>

RE: PROFILE OCCUPATION
ONLINE BAIT IS USED HERE BY PLAYERS

Many players claim to own their own business ... they use that fabrication as BAIT [ which we women are to translate as "I'm a good catch" ] ... or claim to be an attorney or other high-paid professional.

SAYS HE OWNS HIS OWN BUSINESS

Mix in some small talk about business as you ask him these questions or you may put him on guard: [ TAKE NOTES, don't trust your memory ] Ask the name of his business? What type of business is it? Does he have any partners? If he asks why you're asking, say that you thought he would like to talk about his business because he made a point of owning his own business on his profile

Use the below web sites to find if such a company exists:

AT&T Help/Search: Directories (Reverse Lookup)
http://www.att.com/directory

SMARTpages: The online yellow pages directory of business listings
http://smartpages.com/

~ OR ~

Ask what street it is on. Then using the below web site,
find out if there is a business by that name on that street.

Reverse Lookup - InfoSpace
http://www.infospace.com/pla/reverse.htm

Type in the street address (leave out house number), and city & state.
It will give you a list of all the occupants on that street.

OR
if he gives you his business phone number, use the 'reverse look-up' feature

Bottom-line: the same as we women, men want to be loved for themselves, NOT their assets; therefore, no reasonable man would advertise his financial status ... Plus, that's an open invitation to credit card hackers, con artists, gold-diggers, burgulars, etc. Think about it!

TIP SENT IN TO US
I caught a guy in a lie. By doing a reverse search on his phone number, I came up with his name and address. I ran it through the county property tax appraisal (or county auditor's office) -- found out the house was in his wife's name only. He was supposed to be very wealthy but the house was valued at only $56,000. That is one way of checking phonies. If they say they are wealthy, run their address through the property tax appraisal office for the value of their home. (by the way, the guy was supposed to be single) LOL

SAYS HE'S A LAWYER

Again, using small talk and taking notes, work these questions in: what law firm is he with? Which branch of the law does his firm specialize in (practice area)? Which law school did he receive his law degree? Use the below web sites to see if what he told you is true. Again, if he asks why you're asking these questions, say because he made a point of being a lawyer on his profile, you felt he would want to talk about his work. If he comes back with "I really don't want to talk about my profession", scratch him off and move on. He's either a phony or got something to hide.

The Legal Source
http://www.lawlinks.com/html/AttSearch.htm

Just follow the instructions. NOTE: You do not have to know his first name or Firm -- not important. TYPE in city; TYPE in practice area, if you know (not really that important, just cuts down the size of the listing),CLICK on STATE, CLICK on SEARCH. If you don't have a first name, it will provide you with an alphabetical listing of all the lawyers with that last name in that location.
ALSO PROVIDES:

  • what firm they are with

  • the firm's address

  • what is their practice area.

  • click on their name and it will list what school(s) they attended and graduated, their birth date, etc

Use the below web site to find out if law is taught at the school he said he attended:

Law School Directory - an alphabetical list of U.S. law schools
http://www.romingerlegal.com/lawschools.htm

SAYS HE'S A DOCTOR

Same procedure as for a lawyer. Use the below web site(s) for validation or to disprove what he told you.

Find a Doctor using The Doctor Directory's Physician Directory and Doctor Search
http://www.doctordirectory.com/doctors/directory/default.asp?partner=V0=&T=8

~ AND/OR ~

Click-411.com. Find a Doctor
http://www.click-411.com/doctor.htm

CLICK on his field of medicine in Select Specialty, CHANGE United States, if he lives in another country
TYPE in the City, (zip code isn't necessary)
TYPE in his First Name, and then TYPE in his Last Name, CLICK on Find.
BONUS: if his name shows as a hyperlink (is underlined), CLICK on his Name and you will have his whole medical record, type of license(s) and where received, when and what medical school he graduated from, etc.

IMPORTANT TIP: testing this site, at first a staff member had trouble finding one of her doctors. By leaving out his FIRST name, we were able to locate him. We found out it was because he's listed under his first name but goes by his middle name. If you don't find your doctor listed, then check under the name of the suburb instead of the major city. Also, many doctors practice in more than one field of medicine. If he's not found under one "specialty", look under his other field(s) of medicine.
NOTE: Doctors and lawyers rarely put their profession on their profile. To do so, would invite constant requests for free medical / legal advice.
