Journal for BUS1004 Overview of Business Administration (The Ten Day MBA)

2 November 2002
Received email from Hella. Apparently there is some confusion over my choice of book for the review for BUS1002. I was under the impression that I could choose from the books recommended in the foundation course. I chose Steven Silbiger’s “Ten Day MBA” which is one of the books of the foundation course. I’m quite worried because I spent almost 10 hours reading the book. Today I had to stop whatever I was doing until I receive further clarification from Hella. Hopefully, she’ll come back to me soon and my efforts will not have been wasted.

I did spend the time formatting my resume and my journal. What I’ve done is added HTML language to my document so that hopefully all I’ll need to do is copy and past the document on to the text box of my web page. (2 hours)

1 November 2002
Went for a quick run. I am out of shape!

Spent every spare moment reading ‘Ten Day MBA’. There are still areas of accounting that I had and am still having trouble with. Have now come to the Qualitative Analysis chapter. This was one of the most difficult chapters in the BUS1004. Unfortunately Silbiger did not help. (4 hours 15 mins)

31 October 2002
I did not hear from Hella in respect of my email of 27 October about my choice of advisors. Maybe Hella did not receive the last one when her computer crashed.

I continued reading the ‘Ten Day MBA’, following Adler’s recommendation of skim reading without stopping to look up areas that presented a problem when I was doing BUS1004. I also forced myself to use another of Adler’s techniques of putting my two fingers and my thumb together to act as a pointer when reading. It was difficult trying to make my eyes keep up with my fingers.(2 hours and 40 mins)

30 October 2002
I spent time trying to sort out the links to my email address and my URL, and the alignments to the initial section of my ‘Papers’ web page. Whatever I tried did not work. At one point I ended up creating a link not only to my email address but also to all the text below it. After much ringing around I found someone who was willing to give me some direction. It seems that angelfire’s directions to creating links is incomplete. And for aligning things requires tables. I would never have known that. The two problems have been sorted out and there are links to both my email address and my URL. Now, hopefully, all I’ll need to do is copy and past when putting on future assignments on that page. I’ve learned a lot about website creation. (2 hours)

Also began a rough draft of my introduction to BUS1002. I drafted my opinion of the two recommended books. Why I’m reading them and my opinion of the two authors. I also wrote a a very rough draft of Silbiger’s background. [Note to myself: email Silbiger; maybe he’ll oblige by giving me his background in more detail. My initial internet search revealed little.]

I wrote my initial thoughts on his ‘Ten Day MBA’ purely on the basis of my reading of it for BUS1004. Then later at might I began to skim read ‘Ten Day MBA’. (3 hours 30 mins)

29 October 2002
Read up and including p.164 of, ‘How to Read a Book’. Learned that to criticise is not necessarily negative. Also learned that I need to read with an open mind, to ask questions of the writer and perhaps to doubt everything he says.

I also wrote an initial action plan for the book review, e.g. an introduction to ‘How to Read a Book’ and “A Writer’s Manual’ and my opinion of them. I thought it might be useful to include this in my assignment. (3 hours)

28 October 2002
I did not have much success with creating links on my web pages. I followed the HTML language suggested by angelfire’s monkey but it didn’t work. (1 hour 15 mins)

I re-read and made concise notes on BUS1002 assignment so that I am clear in my mind as to what is required and expected in the book review. (30 mins)

27 October 02
Emailed Hella my choice of advisors and the title and ISBN number of the book I have chosen to do a review on for BUS1002.

Although Adler’s book is practical in approach I do find it a little verbose. It’s fine to read if you are reading for pleasure and personal development but if there is an assignment pending I would want to get to the point. At times the language is simple and at others it is not. It’s not always easy to read. (3 hours 50 mins)

26 October 2002
Adler’s book is very enlightening, although at times it can take several paragraphs to come to the actual practical and useable rules. However, I think I am probably an ‘incompetent reader’. I completed chapter 5. Despite it being a weekend I was unable to work further due to family commitments. (2 hour 30 mins.)

25 October 2002
Retyped proposed curriculum to the advisors I would like to work with. (30 mins.)

Started reading “How to Read a Book by Adler and Van Doren. Managed to read and complete up to section 2 of ‘Inspectional Reading 1: Systematic skimming or Pre-reading’. Tomorrow I intent to move on to section 3. (2 hours 10 mins)

23 October 2002
Spent time selecting advisors for my proposed curriculum. I then placed my choices on index cards for ease of reference. (2 hours)

Also decided on book to review for BUS1002. I Chosen “The Ten Day MBA” from Rushmore’s list of foundation courses, which they say that I can choose from.

22 October 2002
Received Hella’s feedback on Draft #1 of my Proposed Curriculum and information about changes in grading for the “Ten Day MBA”. Emended my “Ten Day MBA” for re-submission and I updated my journal for submission and hence grading. (2 hours)

Worked on website. Emended and updated pages. Managed to work out some of the problems I was experiencing though some (links for instance) still prevail. (1.5 hours)

Examined Hella’s instructions for the next assignment. Made notes and started thinking about the methodology I was going to follow. (30 mins)

20 October 2002
Spent time updating website. Added the rest of my “Ten Day MBA” assignment on to the ‘Papers’ page. I’m still uncertain of how to solve the line spacing problem or the problem of creating a link to my email address. Despite this the website isn’t looking bad. I like the background colour and its overall format. I think that, like the Rushmore Website, it’s fairly simple and straightforward. That’s what I’m aiming for. (0.5 hours)

I also emailed Hella Draft #1 of my Proposed Curriculum. I have decided that I will take one of Peter Drucker’s courses : “Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Practice and Principles”.

Spent time on my column and almost completed it. I thought that I’d get an early start rather than working on it on Thursday evening when there is a Poolside Party in the apartment complex that I may wish to attend.

19 October 2002
Emailed my column to the Gulf Today.

Worked on and managed to complete the first draft of my curriculum. Haven’t really had any further thoughts on my website. I think that I shall just put the rest of my “Ten Day MBA” assignment on to my website and think about the links and the line spacing for later. My main concern is to ensure that my course advisors and other members of the Rushmore faculty can see my progress as I work through my MBA.

18 October 2002
Spent the afternoon typing up my column and managed to complete it in about an hour.

Spent the rest of the afternoon and part of the evening putting together my proposed curriculum and a few paragraphs behind my rational. I hope that on Saturday (tomorrow) I can type up my first draft and have it ready to email by Sunday or Monday. (3 hours)

17 October 2002
Spent the evening working on my newspaper column. Managed to complete it and intend to type it up tomorrow.

16 October 2002
Tried working on my web pages again. Tried to create links to my email address and to one of Rushmore’s email addresses but without success. I tried adapting the techniques used by another website again without success. (1.5hours)

15 October 2002
Tried in vain to change the line spacing but without success. However, I did manage to increase the size of some of the fonts after which it was looking better. I don’t know what to do about the line spacing. (1.5 hours)

Worked on my curriculum again, this time trying to explain my choices. (1.5hours)

14 October 2002
Accessed website again to try and centrally align 3 of the lines. After much trial and error and trying different techniques I managed to centrally align the 3 lines that needed aligning. I now want to increase the size of some of the fonts and to decrease the line spacing between the certain sentences. (1 hour)

13 October 2002
Emailed my response to the art society and emailed my column to the Gulf Today.

Today I accessed my website to work so that I could work on some of my web pages. I managed to put only part of my “Ten Day MBA” on to my website. I didn’t want to put too much on without really knowing what I was doing. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. A lot can be accomplished by trial and error. In the short space of time I had I managed to put only half of what I wanted to and even then I was unable to format it the way I wanted to. (1.5hours)

Worked on my curriculum. There are simply too many courses to choose from. It’s a bit like a sweetshop full of sweets. It’s like being spoilt for choice. However, I have an idea of what I want to do even though my proposed choices may seem bizarre to an outsider. I will explain the rationale behind my choices to Hella. (2 hours)

12 October 2002
Spent the morning writing drafts of my curriculum and the reasoning behind my choices. Spent the evening doing the same and preparing to put things on to my website. Feeling nervous!

11 October 2002
Spent the entire day working on my Tuesday column. Tomorrow I intend to type it up and email it by Sunday 13th October. (2 hours)

10 October 2002
I emailed my response to the art society’s copyright query and also received a thank you and the offer of a free “Painting from Photographs” video as inspiration. I also have to take care of my Tuesday column.

I have had further thoughts about my curriculum. I know the courses I want to do but really need to have a clear reason for my choices. I really want to email my first draft to Hella at least by Monday or Tuesday (15th or 16th October) next week. (2 hours)

9 October 2002
Emailed my final assignment with this journal to Hella at file@rushmore.edu.

Now I intend to put the contents of my “Ten Day MBA”, the Profile and my resume onto my website. I’m getting a little nervous because since I created the basic pages of my website I haven’t really put any information on it. I just hope I can do it without any problems.

Also received another copyright query from my art society. I’ll try and deal with it this evening so that I can get it out of the way before the weekend.

7 October 2002
To my surprise I received my edited assignment back from the editors. Some of the changes were so obvious, why on earth did I not see them? Some I agreed with whilst others I understand but have decided I will not incorporate. The editorial service is, however, vital. Even though we have spell-check and grammar check, it’s still possible to miss things. (3 hours)

What a great office DHB is. They celebrated my birthday (a little late). Very surprised. Received a silver pendant and a carved wooden box!

6 October 2002
Emailed column to newspaper and assignment to the university editor for editing.

Looked at list of courses and compiled a preliminary list of what I intend to follow. Have decided to stick to the universities proposed foundation courses. The’re probably essential in that they give a grounding in the basics of an MBA. (3 hours)

5 October 2002
Continued to work on column and managed to complete it.

Spent the rest of the day thinking about the curriculum and realised from the “Ten Day MBA” that I wanted to take Economics, Advertising (for local reasons which I’ll explain to Hella), and Quality Management.

4 October 2002
Spent time formatting my assignment before sending to Editorial. (3 hours)

Spent the rest of the day struggling with an idea for my column, eventually coming up with something very late at night. Managed only 3 short paragraphs.

Spent time considering curriculum.

3 October 2002
Hella came back to me with her feedback. It was helpful, as it always is. As usual I am impressed by their speed of response.

I also discussed the course with one of my sisters. She informed me that one of her colleagues has enrolled on an MSc. Unfortunately that was almost 6 weeks ago and he still hasn’t received his material from them.

1 October 2002
Received a response from Hella saying she will look over my draft and come back to me in a couple of days.

Also, the two books from my friend in the UK arrived today.

25 September 2002
Emailed my “Ten Day MBA” assignment to Hella. Waiting for feedback so that I can send it to editorial before final submission for grading.

Still no word from the bookshop about “Business Research Methods”.

24 September 2002
Today I intend to finish typing chapters 8 and 9 so that I can email a second draft to Hella for her feedback, at least by Thursday.

18-23 September 2002
Managed to complete chapters 8 and 9. Found these to be the most interesting and ones that I feel I may want to pursue further. I had a quick read of Chapter 10 and found I already had brief prior knowledge of Business Law and of negotiating tactics. (9 hours)

Received another query from my art society which I completed and emailed to them. As a gesture they’ve given me free membership to the society for the help I am giving them on their copyright column.(1 hour)

17 September 2002
Had trouble with the internet all day. Could not log on to Internet or MS Outlook. Therefore could not check on response from Hella or send friend postal address for the books.

Received a bizarre call from a salesman of a bookshop saying ‘Business Research Methods’ hadn’t been published yet and when it was he would let me know. When I corrected him by referring him to Amazon.com and Addall.com he went quiet and said he’d call me back. Dubai is not at all student friendly.

Read chapter 7 and made notes. (3 hours)

16 September 2002
Completed Ch. 6 and its overview. Again a difficult chapter. Not sure I want to pursue Quantitative Analysis. (4 hours)

Received a copyright query from my art society which I answered and will email tomorrow.

Received email from my friend in UK saying that one of the 2 books I requested had arrived and wanted mailing address.

Tomorrow I shall make a start on Ch.7 on Operations.

15 September 2002
Due to a family emergency I was unable to study over the weekend (Friday-Saturday) as planned and only managed to do some reading late Saturday (14th). (2 hour)

Also hadn’t given my Tuesday column much thought all week. Due in today. Last night had to put something together ASAP. After 2 hours of intensive thinking going back and forth between the BUS1004 assignment and my column I managed to produce an 800 word article. I was amazed. Managed to email column to Gulf Today. Phew!(1 hour for BUS1004)

Had more trouble finding “Business Research Methods”. One bookseller made a promise last week and has subsequently let me down.

Decided to email Hella with request. Spoke to a friend who says he’ll try in the Far East and daddy spoke to friend who is leaving for India on Saturday to try there. So many attempts and no fruit, as yet.

Completed Ch. 4 and 5 and their overview. Started Chapter 6. (4 hours)

12 September 2002
Received Hella’s feedback on the revised overview of the “Ten Day MBA”. Felt relieved. A friend has also agreed to get me “How to read a Book” and “The Craft of Research” from the UK.

9-11 September 2002
Received feedback on my “Ten Day MBA” outline. Hella’s comments helped enormously. I was able to continue with the assignment and completed the first 3 chapters which I emailed to Hella for further feedback. (10 hours)

8 September 2002
Emailed column to the newspaper and my outline of ideas for current assignment to Hella.

Worked on my introduction to Donald Bunker and Associates. Finished it. Feel much more relaxed today about the current assignment. Any qualms I had dissipated after perusing some Rushmore students’ websites. (1 hour)

Also decided to work on my journal and then spent the rest of the evening relaxing and watching TV. (2 hours)

6 September 2002
Woke up early to visit my apartment complex health club. They have opened up a study room packed with books donated by the complex tenants. Found some books that I might use as part of my Rushmore MBA.

Also decided to work on my “Gulf Today” column that appears on Tuesday. With a full time job, the MBA course and the column, I started wondering how I was going to manage. Finished the column. It is ready to email. Started on Accounting chapter.

Realised that I need to manage my time more efficiently. Don’t wish appear to be studying all the time, without any relaxation. (8 hours)

5 September 2002
Finished Day 1 of the “Ten Day MBA” and making notes. Decided that I would start and finish chapter 2 on Ethics as well... It is a considerably shorter chapter and seems to apply to any field of activity. This chapter was very familiar since many concepts covered by it were also covered by another book I read on risk management, “When Good Companies Do Bad Things”. Refreshed my memory. (4 hrs)

4 September 2002
Sent the profile back to Hella.

Started on Day 1 of the “Ten Day MBA”. Stayed up late reading the Marketing chapter. Interesting and so familiar. Began to make notes for the assignment. (2 hours)

3 September 2002
Received my profile back from Editor with surprisingly few comments. I incorporated most and intend to send it back tomorrow. (45 mins.)

Bought the “Ten Day MBA” and started to read it. Also started to think about the assignment. Made a few written notes. (2 hours)

Have become copyright advisor to my arts society. Today received a copyright query that I spent time answering. (½ hour)

2 September 2002
Started to think about courses I want to take; Quality Management definitely, general management and advertising, perhaps. (All day)

Received unexpected email from Hella about the next assignment. Read the “Ten Day MBA” and produce paper based on it. Sounds excited. Enquired about the “Ten Day MBA” at a local bookshop. Since the bookshop is new it may be willing to help. (½ hour)

1 Septembre 2002
Emailed Hella about wire transfer. Since it is North America’s long bank holiday I don’t expect to hear until Tuesday.

31 August 2002
Went to the bank to arrange transfer of tuition fee to Rushmore University. (½ hour)

29 August 2002
Worked on website (2 hours)

24 August 2002
Profile completed and emailed to Rushmore. Also must arrange for payment of tuition fees.

22-23 August 2002
Attempted to complete profile so that I could email it on Saturday 24 Aug 2002. (8 hours)

20 August 2002
Continued to work on profile.

18 August 2002
Received acceptance email from Hella & Prof Cox and other members of the faculty.

Also received 1st assignment. Glad I had already started it.

Had a look at free web hosting site, Angelfire.com. It was what I was looking for; free domain name and free web hosting. (½ hour)

15-16 August 2002
Decided to design layout of web pages. Keep it simple.

Also decided to enquire about books. Studying is doubly difficult here because of the difficulty of finding books locally and the lack relevant resources in local libraries. The readership fees are astronomical! (4 hours)

13 August 2002
Emailed CV to Rushmore with a view to enrolling on MBA.

Continued to work on profile.

Started to think about contents of website, number of pages and above all a simple layout. (2 hours)

8 August 2002
Learned more about web authoring tools, domain names and web hosting, a real learning experience. (2 hours)

29 July 2002 – 2 August 2002
Started to think about web authoring tools and analysed several free downloadable. Found some that were easy to use but had only one page limit.

Continued to work on profile. (12 hours)

28 July 2002
Made a start on profile. Rational? Get a head start. Started to think about website (1 hour) /B>

16-27 July 2002
After much research found Rushmore University advertised in Economist. Conducted extensive background search by contacting alumni, students and professors. (20 hours)

Journal for BUS1002 Foundation for Graduate Study in Business & Administration

Friday, 10 January 2003
Mr Barley came back to me with the final editing. The changes were minor and took only 10 minutes to incorporate. The assignment is now ready for grading. (10 mins)

Wednesday, 8 January 2003
On Anna’s suggestion I decided to send a follow up to Mr Barley, the editor and literally within minutes received a response. Thinking that I hadn’t received his first edited version he sent it to me again. I then emailed him back to tell him that I had sent him my version for final editing around the 18/19 December 2002 and it was that version I was enquiring about. He then apologised saying that he had indeed received it but thought it was my initial version before his first editing. I then emailed him my version for final editing again. I am told he will come back to me within 5 business day and if I don’t hear from him in that time I should contact him again. At least the mystery has been sorted. (1 hour)

Friday, 3 January 2003
Nothing.

Monday, 30 December 2002
I thought I might have heard by now since it’s after Christmas. I don’t know whether I should send a follow up because after it has been Christmas. Maybe I should just wait until 2 January 2003.

Thursday, 19 December 2002
I emailed my assignment for final editing. I don’t think I’ll hear until after Christmas though.

Monday - Wednesday, 16 - 18 December 2002
The editors came back to me with their comments. I am so surprised that I missed some of the things they pointed out. I also found their comments and suggestions for providing further information and explanations on some of the terms I used very helpful and it made me go back to the books again. Strangely enough I found that I was able to be a bit clearer with my explanations than before.

It took longer than I thought it would to incorporate or reject the editor’s suggestions. Since it was the middle of the week I was only able to devote around 3 hours a day. Tomorrow I intend to send my assignment back to the editor for checking and final editing before final submission. (~6 hours)

Monday, 9 December 2002
Today Anna sent me back her comments on my assignment and then asked me to forward it to the Editor. This I did.

Wednesday, 4 December 2002
Forwarded my completed assignment to Anna for comment.

Thursday/Friday, 5 – 6 December 02
Spent time sorting out the bibliography (which covers 2 pages!), the abbreviations and the footnotes. I also tried to reduce the word count for the paper and managed to cut it down by about 450 words. After reading it over and over again for sense and to see if there are further cuts I make I think I have reached my limit. (7 hours)

Sunday – Thursday, 1 – 4 December 02
I started and completed typing up this assignment, checking the citations again, formatting them, spell-checking and reducing the word content as much as I can. The word count currently rests at about 8,439 including the citations, which are in square brackets. Once these have been put in to the footnotes the word count will go down.

I have also written a letter for Anna Green who is filling in for Hella. I emailed Anna my draft #1 with my journal and covering letter with queries. I hope she will be able to help me with some queries I have. (~20 hours)

Saturday, 30 November 02
The Mini-MBA was an easy to follow chapter mainly because I was already familiar with most of it through my work and as a result of the extensive reading and internet search exercises I have conducted for this assignment. (2 hours)

Thursday/Friday, 28 – 29 November 02
I had put off this chapter till the last and here I have started. I wanted to understand this topic and made a concerted effort to understand NPV, PV and Accumulated values, which all seemed the same at first. I found other publications that helped enormously in clarifying things. Have now understood regression analysis, The curves and the decision tree. (12 hours)

Monday, 25 November 02
I’m pleased to say that I’m really beginning to understand both the Keynesian and Monetarist theories and think I am leaning towards the Keynesian. )

I also started to browse “Decision and Dilemma”. Interesting! (6 hours)

Sunday, 24 November 02
I completed the operations chapter and made a start on the economics. I thought Macroeconomics was interesting. I found a book by Alfred Marshall that explains things better. Also a book that was given to me recently as a birthday present is coming in very handy. I conducted some background reading into economics (Almost Everyone’s Guide to Economic by JK Galbraith and Nicole Salinger). The book is very readable. I made a concerted effort to understand how the theory is applied in reality. (3 hours)

Saturday, 23 November 02
Today I began the Operations chapter. Again I found useful material on the internet and hence use worthy material about Taylor’s life and work. I also seem to be understanding more though at present I am still uncertain about MRP. (~6 hours)

Friday, 22 November 02
I started the Finance chapter today and continued to work till 3am since it’s the weekend and not my turn to monitor the office. So I can have a lie-in. It’s also really quiet at this time of night. All you can hear is the quiet hissing of the air-conditioning.

I understood more about the subject as I read it than I did in my initial 2 reads. I also found better and easier to understand terminology. I also looked over the assignment instructions again to ensure I wasn’t going off track. Late at night around 2-2.30am the NPV clicked. (6 hours)

Thursday, 21 November 02
I read some of the articles I printed off from Rushmore’s library and made notes. I also spend one hour looking for some information on organisational behaviour. I found a couple of informative websites on ‘paradigm’. It’s a nice chapter. (3 hours)

Wednesday, 20 November 02
Today I found some interesting articles about interviews with Peter Drucker and Tom Peters on the Internet.

I also completed the accounting chapter and am avoiding the QA chapter till the very last. Instead I made start on Ethics. (3 hours 20 mins)

Tuesday, 19 November 02
Today I tried to understand the double entry system and worked on understanding the many ratios and what they mean in reality. (3 hours 30 mins)

Monday, 18 November 02
I am now beginning to understand cash v. accrual accounting. I found some good material my sister was given by her bank on financial statements and accrual accounting. I continued to outline the 7 basic steps and found other books on terminology very helpful.

My sister, with whom I was discussing cash v accrual accounting, advised that I shouldn’t get too bogged don with in-depth analysis, which is what I was doing. However, in the long run, it will be for my benefit (3 hours)

Sunday, 17 November 02
Decided to write and outline of the accounting and QA chapters. Found some definitions that Silbiger did not give. I made a list of the main points in both chapters and then went onto the internet to try and find some related and helpful material. I found definitions to terms mentioned in ‘Ten Day MBA’. I am beginning to understand a little more about accounting but not enough to be confident with it. Maybe that will change after reviewing this chapter. (3 hours 15 mins)

Saturday, 16 November 02
During the week I printed a number of articles from the Rushmore library. Today I spent 45minutes filing and labelling them for easy retrieval.

Also tried to complete the marketing chapter and did! (4 hours 52 minutes)

Friday, 15 November 02
Worked solidly today in an attempt to complete the marketing chapter but was not able to. Could not work late because I have to pop into the office in the morning. (4 hours 36 mins)

Thursday, 14 November 02
Unable to work today because of travel to Qatar to renew my visa. Took the whole day. I did not stay up late because in the morning, although it’s the weekend, it’s my turn to monitor office email and faxes.

Read ‘Lincoln on Leadership’ for half hour.

Tuesday, 12 November 02
I spent time searching the Rushmore internet library and found some interesting and useful articles. (~30 mins)

Still struggling with the marketing chapter. I am beginning to wonder whether the chapter is too long or whether I am over-doing things. (2 hours)

Bought an interesting and informative book called, ‘Lincoln on Leadership’ about President Lincoln’s leadership style. It’s amazing how yesterday’s strategies can still be applied today. (~30 mins)

Monday, 11 November 02
I’m spending far too much time analysing every phrase that I think is important. Silbiger’s explanations are not always adequate and I have to look elsewhere for better explanations and better examples. (2 hours 30 min)

Sunday, 10 November 02
I continued to read the marketing chapter and kept coming and stopping at words and phrases that needed further or better clarification. I recall from ‘How to Read a Book’ that at this stage I should dwell on these areas. I browsed MS Encarta 1995 and went to the library and found a Canadian book on marketing.

I have too many books and too many articles around me. I also think that maybe I’m overanalysing everything. However, that is my learning process. (1 hour 30 min)

Thursday – Saturday, 7-9 November 02
Began the analytical reading stage after re-reading Adlers instruction in pages 45-51 and his 15 points so that I know what I am looking for. As I read I tried marking the book, again it was difficult because I wasn’t sure what I should be marking and how. I have come up to the marketing chapter. However, since this is the third read of Silbiger’s book I do find that more is sinking in, which is the purpose I chose this particular book for the review, (~6 hours)

Friday – Wednesday, 1 - 6 November 02
Spent every spare moment skim reading ‘Ten Day MBA’. There were areas of accounting and quantitative analysis that I had trouble with and for which “The Ten Day MBA” was inadequate. However I continued reading and resolved that I would solve these problems when I came to the analytical stage. (4 hours 15 mins)

Thursday, 31 October 02
I did not hear from Hella in respect of my email of 27 October about my choice of advisors. Maybe Hella did not receive the last one when her computer crashed.

I continued reading the ‘Ten Day MBA’, following Adler’s recommendation of skim reading without stopping to look up areas that presented a problem when I was doing BUS1004. I also forced myself to use another of Adler’s techniques of putting my two fingers and thumb together to act as a pointer when reading. It was difficult trying to make my eyes keep up with my fingers. (2 hours and 40 mins)

Wednesday, 30 October 02

I also wrote a very rough draft of Silbiger’s background. [Note to myself: email Silbiger; maybe he’ll oblige by giving me his background in more detail. My initial internet search revealed little.

I wrote my initial thoughts on his ‘Ten Day MBA’ purely on the basis of my reading of it for BUS1004. Then later at night I began to skim read ‘Ten Day MBA’. (3 hours 30 mins)

Tuesday, 29 October 02
Read up to and including p.164 of, ‘How to Read a Book’.

(3 hours)

Monday, 28 October 02
I did not have much success with creating links on my web pages. I followed the HTML language suggested by angelfire’s monkey but it didn’t work. (1 hour 15 mins)

I re-read and made concise notes on BUS1002 assignment so that I am clear in my mind as to what is required and expected in the book review. (30 mins)

Sunday, 27 October 02
Emailed Hella my choice of advisors and the title and ISBN number of the book I have chosen to do a review on for BUS1002.

Although Adler’s book is practical in approach I do find it a little verbose. It’s fine to read if you are reading for pleasure and personal development but if there is an assignment pending I would want to get to the point. At times the language is simple and at others it is not. It’s not always easy to read. (3 hours 50 mins)

Saturday, 26 October 02
Adler’s book is very enlightening, although at times it can take several paragraphs to come to the actual practical and useable rules. However, I think I am probably an ‘incompetent reader’. I completed chapter 5. Despite it being a weekend I was unable to work further due to family commitments. (2 hour 30 mins.)

Friday, 25 October 02
Retyped proposed curriculum with the advisors I would like to work with. (30 mins.)

Started reading “How to Read a Book by Adler and Van Doren. Managed to read and complete up to section 2 of ‘Inspectional Reading 1: Systematic skimming or Pre-reading’. Tomorrow I intent to move on to section 3. (2 hours 10 mins)

Wednesday, 23 October 02
Spent time selecting advisors for my proposed curriculum. I then placed my choices on index cards for ease of reference. (2 hours)

Also decided on book to review for BUS1002. I have Chosen “The Ten Day MBA” from Rushmore’s list of foundation courses.

Total time spent = 122 hours 28 minutes

Journal for BUS1201 Business Research I

Monday, 10 February 2003
I received the edited version of my paper. There weren’t that many comments but still to double check things it took me a bit of time to incorporate/reject any comments I received. I have said this before but will say it again. This service is unique and invaluable. No matter how careful one is with commas, sentence structure and spell check, a second eye is always helpful. (~1 hour)

Sunday, 9 February 2003
I spent the entire morning putting the footnotes, bibliography and table of contents in to my paper. I then emailed it to editor@rushmore.edu for their comments. I hope they come back to me today. (3 hours)

Saturday, 8 February 2003
Prof. Smith came back to me with his feedback. He said the paper was ready for grading. Tomorrow morning I shall finish formatting it.

Tueday, 4 February 2003
I spent time updating my BUS1201 journal. I also checked for any responses from Anna/Hella or Prof. Smith. It’s probably a little too soon.

I spent time formatting my paper in the Rushmore way just to put as much work in as possible. I put in the abbreviations at the end and made a start on the bibliography. I am leaving the footnotes till last so that I can work on them after I receive Prof Smith’s feedback. I also noticed while reading my paper that I needed more subheadings just to break things up a bit and to make them easier to read.

Now all I have left is to put in the bibliography and the footnotes which shouldn’t take long. (~5½ hours)

Monday, 3 February 2003
Prof. Smith came back to me to say he will look at my draft and come back to me later this week. In the mean time I think that perhaps I shall make a start on the next course. I emailed Anna/Hella for their permission. Hopefully they’ll come back to me soon. I have started skim reading ‘Innovation and Entrpreneurship’ by Drucker for BUS2045.

Sunday, 2 February 2003
I completed my draft of the paper. The word count is 5,792. I still need to format it to Rushmore’s requirement and to put the footnotes in. The citations are currently unformatted and remain in square brackets]. Once I receive Prof Smith’s feedback I shall incorporate them and then format. I then need to send it the Editors before grading.

I emailed my draft to Prof Smith for his feedback. (~4 hours)

Saturday, 1 February 2003
This afternoon I overheard my mother express some real concern to my sister about the lack of work I was putting in on MBA. I then made a real effort try and complete my thesis in the next couple of days and send a draft to Prof Smith for his feedback. I went through the cards one at a time and tried to be objective as possible about the UAE approach and the Gulf in general. Thankfully I had already made a rough start before and had been writing bits and pieces here and there. It, therefore, was not as difficult a task as I thought it might be. I complete ¾ of my paper. (~4 hours)

Friday, 31 January 2003
I tried to distract myself from my redundancy by working on my thesis. I only managed a short span of time and then gave up. I was getting increasingly worried that I was neglecting my thesis and consequently my MBA and decided to try and do something about it. (~½ hour}

Tuesday – Thursday, 28 – 30 January 2003
On Tuesday, 28 January I was made redundant from work. They blamed the Airline industry’s downturn after September 11 and the impending tension in the Gulf. I was given one month’s notice which I was welcome to work through if I wanted. However, if I did not want to they would understand. I thought it best not to and concentrate in my MBA and perhaps double the pace at which I was working and thus complete it sooner. They could not stop apologising and asked me to keep in touch.

I couldn’t really work after that and did not for several days.

Sunday - Monday, 26 - 27 January 2003
I read through 3 major reports and found them to be of substance, interesting and informative. These reports discussed in length angles that UAE based material had not even touched upon.I have found UAE based material to be obvious and quite repetitive. By the end of Monday, 27 January I was, in fact seeing some order from the chaos of my pile of information. I can’t wait to discard it all and move on to something that won’t irritate me so much.

It can be very frustrating dealing with the local population simply because everything rest on ‘tomorrow’. And ‘tomorrow’ never comes. (~2 hours)

Friday - Saturday, 24-25 January 2003
At this stage, I am little bit confused because I have too much information from too many sources. However, I have discovered that a lot of them are repeats. Today I re-wrote my notes and sifted through them to discard the unwanted or unusable material. I then proceeded to put the notes I was going to use for my paper on 6 x 3 in cards, one card for one set of statistics. I also numbered them in the order that I would like them to appear in my paper. (5½ hours)

Wednesday, 22 January 2003
My interview with Mr Al Syed was scheduled for 4.00pm but was postponed until 4.30pm when he was able to speak to me. We discussed Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), for whom he is HR director, and EPPCO, its subsidiary. He was informed, not just about the practices with EPCCO but about Emiratisation in general.

I made notes as we spoke, after which I quickly sorted through them in case my notes became illegible to me or made less sense later. (~1 hour)

Tuesday, 21 January 2003
Not surprisingly neither of my interviewees was available for the interview despite the fact that they were pre-arranged. I had expected this as being typical of local labour force. My so-called appointment has now been re-scheduled for tomorrow.

I did further research on the internet and struck gold this time simply because I changed the wording of my search in google.com. I managed to download 3 major studies of the labour trends not only in the UAE but the gulf generally. And more importantly, they answered so many more of my questions than any of my other previous finds did.

I also came across other reports by local authorities in the UAE but alas they were in Arabic only. It would seem that data is not readily available to the general public, counterproductive really if they want to promote Emiratisation..

My Tuesday column did not appear. Upon enquiry the Editor apologised and said there was no room. He said he did his best to allot space and could not. The whole of that page was covered in local dancing girls, probably for the Dubai Shopping Festival..Outrageous!

Tomorrow I want to double check one of the sources. The source is correct but I just want to check if there is an updated version of it, from the statistics point of view, that is. (~4 hours)

Monday, 20 January 2003
Spent the day arranging telephone interviews with HRD Manager at Emirates National Oil (ENOC) company and the contact for the Human Resources Development Committee at HSBC. I spent the evening formulating my questions. (2.5 hours)

Saturday, 18 January 2003
I received an email from Anna informing me that Professor Gary Smith has been assigned as my advisor. I also received an email from Professor Smith inviting me to submit anything I would like him to look over for me.

This afternoon I put together a draft outline of the areas I intend to cover in my paper. I intend to send my email on Monday. (1 hour)

Thursday, 16 January 2003
I continued to make notes from the information I found. I also discovered that there is indeed no decree or law as such regarding Emiratisation that says companies must do this or must do that. There are internal company resolutions and board decisions spurred on my government recommendations. There is, however, some sort of ‘decree’ although that’s not what government officials, or indeed the banks, like to call it. They have been asked to assign a quota. (3 hours)

Wednesday, 15 January 2003
I spent time continuing my rough draft of my thesis. I tried to write bits and pieces as was suggested by ‘Craft of Research’. (2 hours)

Sunday, 12 - 13 January 2003
I spent more time on the internet looking for more information. The national newspaper in the United Arab Emirates Gulf News has an online version of its paper and I was able to download something like 20 different new stories about emiratisation and human resources in general. I think that, at this point, I have exhausted my search for information. I think that this is all that I’m likely to find. Now for the actual, I think.

I received an email from Anna acknowledging receipt of my attachments in respect of this assignment.. She says that I need to send the ‘corrected’ version of my profile before she can approach an advisor. I don’t know what she means. The profile I sent was the one I submitted to Hella in the beginning. I emailed Anna back asking for clarification. Perhaps she means to remove all the highlighting and the coloured fonts from the editor. I hope she can come back to me soon because I do need an advisor at this stage, which I think is the actual writing stage.

There doesn’t seem to be a published decree although an Emiratisation law has been passed. Nobody seems to know anything.

I also spend time on my website. (½ hour) Today I published the names of the journal and newspaper articles I have written. I also wrote an introduction to Rushmore and the reasons for the website. I then finished my session by correcting a couple of errors on the ‘journal’ page that a friend noticed when he logged on to my website. (3 hours)

Saturday, 11 January 2003
I spoke to a contact at the Ministry of Information and Culture in Dubai and he said that the UAE Yearbook 2002 was available and that he’d drive by my apartment to drop it off later this afternoon after work. They finish at 2.30. I waited all afternoon but he did not turn up (typical), nor did he ring to explain (again typical). I then went on the internet again and discovered that the yearbook is available online. Tomorrow I shall download the chapters I need.

The Human Resources Development Committee was a blank (they have nothing in print) as was the DCCI library.

The government departments and offices run by nationals in the UAE are a strange breed and quite honestly the bane of expatriates’ lives. They never answer their phones and don’t or refuse to speak in English, which does beg a question in my mind over and over again. Why do they not hire English speaking staff? The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is notorious in this respect. They just kept hanging up on me or kept putting me through to an extension that was unattended. I tried for almost 3 hours without any luck.

I was most vexed and was reminded of the frustration and anger one feels when trying to deal with nationals. It’s like banging ones head against a brick wall. In a way I’m glad I chose to cover Emiratisation as my research subject because (a) it has reminded me how unstable all expats’ jobs are in Dubai despite the fact that these Emiratis are uncertain about their strategy but Emiratise they will and (b) it reminded me to keep my dealings with government personnel to a minimum.

I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to work on the remaining files I had downloaded last week. I’ll be glad when this thesis is over because since I began it I have not been a nice person to be around. Locals and anything to do with them seems to bring out the worst in me. (3 hours)

Thursday, 9 January 2003
Again I was off sick from work. I couldn’t sleep at all last night because of a dry throat and a blocked up nose. I also had to do my regular visa change schedule. I didn’t feel up to it but I had no choice because my visit visa was about to expire.

I did do some reading in the departure lounge and on the plane (The Millionaire Mind). When I returned home I continued to read and make notes from my downloads. I also think I should try and get hold of a copy of the Emiratisation Decree (there must be one), the Dubai Yearbook 2002 (apparently there is an article in it on Emiratisation) and the HRD Committee. All this on Saturday, since Friday is a weekend. (~3 hours)

Wednesday, 8 January 2003
I didn’t go into work today because I have a full blown cold. Against my better judgement I rang the DCCI library in the afternoon. The woman said she’d have a look and I was to call her in half an hour. When I did she said she found nothing (surprising since the topic is so important to these people) but if I rang her on Saturday after midday she’d speak to her colleague. She claimed that she had seen this colleague with a bound publication but didn’t know where this colleague had put it. I asked whether she knew who published it. She didn’t but would find out on Saturday from her colleague. I am not really hopeful.

I continued to plough through my Emiratisation downloads and must confess that I have learned quite a bit from my reading so far. For instance, I hadn’t realised that some of the changes the authorities had made to their visa/labour laws were to help facilitate Emiratisation!

I emailed Anna my list of Completed and Planned Courses with a copy of my profile, resume and BUS1004. I would have like to have sent her BUS1002 but at present I still haven’t heard back from the editor since I sent him my assignment for final editing on 19 December 2002. I did inform Anna and she suggested sending a reminder to the editor.

I was also relieved to hear that Dr Cox just wanted to make sure I understood what I was supposed to be doing. (3 hours)

Tuesday, 7 January 2003
Today I really came down with a cold and was sent home by my office at around 10.30am. However, on the way home I popped into the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) library. I’d heard so much about it and was very disappointed with the lack of help I got from the staff and indeed the amount of resources available. The library was frugal to say the least. I was told that there was information but only in the Arabic language. If I was interested in an English version I would have had to hang around for at least a couple of hours when another shift would come in and maybe they might be able to help. However, since I didn’t feel well, I decided against it. Instead I went straight home to bed.

Later in the evening I did try to read further from the files I had downloaded during the week and I continued to make notes.

I have still not heard from Dr Cox and am worried about what it might be about. I hope I haven’t upset anyone in the faculty. (6 hour)

Monday, 6 January 2003
It is surprising that even though there is a vast initiative for Emiratisation that (a) there is very little in print and (b) not readily available for the general public who they are targeting as the ones responsible for the mass unemployment of their people.

I spoke to an acquaintance I met about 8 months ago about a possible position in a consultancy firm called Texas Management Consultants. He now no longer works with them and has joined a training/ HR consultancy, Maha Dubai, as a consultant. They predominantly place nationals. I spoke to him and he was able to fill me in on the problems of placing nationals in the private sector and why some banks are doing better than others.

I think I have a cold coming on. Do not feel well. (1 hour)

Sunday, 5 January 2003
I received Tanmia list of publications and unfortunately they don’t appear to be worth buying. However, I spoke to The Gulf News Business Editor who is also a friend and he told me of two other organisations that are likely to have reliable information that is based on the UAE financial sector. They are the Human Resources Development Committee for the Financial Sector and The Emirates Training and Banking Institute of Sharjah.

Tomorrow I’ll make that call these calls.

I also feel quite annoyed with myself. I accidentally deleted my column for Tuesday! I searched in every diskette I have and drew a blank. It was a good column too. Blast!

Saturday, 4 January 2003
When I checked my emails this morning there was a message from Anna from Dr Cox saying that he wanted to talk to me. Goodness, I’m so worried. I hope I haven’t done anything wrong. I don’t really have access to international calls so I sent Anna a message back with my contact details. I don’t what time of day it is.

Spent more time on my introduction to Dubai and Emiratisation. The more information I read the more I am convinced that to an outsider all their strategies are going to seem very ‘prejudiced’ and anti-expats, and I don’t believe this is the case. I made further notes from the documents I downloaded on Thursday.

I spoke to Tanmia. The woman in the research department said there are papers available but at cost. She’ll email me the list for me to peruse for suitability and purchase. Each is likely to cost me AED15 (~US$4). I’ll check my emails first thing. (4 hours)

Friday, 3 January 2003
Anna came back to me with her feedback on my choice of topic for 1201. She liked my plan and wants me to complete the List of Planned and Completed courses. I did this after lunch today. I also need to email my resume, profile and copies of any papers I have completed.

I have also been attempting to get hold of personnel to interview and have come to the conclusion that it may not be possible to have people as my primary source of information. Moreover, I have received no response to the email I sent Tanmia asking for more information on Emiratisation.

Incidentally, ‘Wealth of Nations’ by Smith is available at my friend’s university library, and another book by Robbins called Organisational Behaviour. Not the one on the course but worth having as reference. (3 hours)

Thursday, 2 January 2003
I wrote about 4 lines in my introductory paragraph. Should have done more but for some reason I couldn’t find the inspiration to do any work. I was just distracted by non-MBA related matters. (½ hour)

Wednesday, New Years Day, 2003
My sister once taught students on the Tanmia programme. She says she’ll speak to an ex-colleague at Dubai Aviation College to ask if they have a contact they can let me have. I asked her just in case my friend drew a blank. Mind you, I might hear by next Saturday when all local offices open after the New Year.

I went through more of the Tanmia and Emiratisation files I had downloaded but I could not do as much as I had hoped I would. I’m feeling a little apprehensive about this assignment, mostly because of the subject area and the possible lack of information available. What if this is the case or people, namely Tanmia, are not so forthcoming? That would mean starting from scratch. I can usually get people to help me. I have to hone my PR ‘skills’. Maybe if I went straight to Tanmia myself and explained my position they’ll be more than willing to help me. I must chase people up on Saturday.

I did spend some time backing up the Rushmore folder I have set up for the course. It contains all my pending and completed assignments, my journals, relevant downloads and any correspondences I have had. I feel safer now.

Tomorrow I must begin at least a rough introduction. (~3 hours)

Tuesday, New Years Eve, 2002
I spoke to my friend first thing this morning and he had already discovered what I was about tell him about the Tanmia publication. He said he had spoken to a colleague who knows someone at Tanmia to ask if I could have permission to access the material I needed. Apparently I need to be furnished with a user ID and password.

I worked on the Balcony this evening. Unfortunately there was nowhere in the apartment I could study. The balcony was quieter and I put the light on. I managed to read and made notes on ‘Craft of Research’ and learned a lot more about what I’m supposed to do.

Main learning? Bombard the topic with one question after another and start writing straight away; Don’t leave the writing to the end. Maybe I’ll begin with an introduction tomorrow. Also the more you understand a topic the better you’ll be able to write about it.

I also worked on typing this journal. Tomorrow I shall go through my downloaded Tanmia files to make notes and ‘paraphrase’ without plagiarising and I need to start on ‘The Millionaire Mind’. Also we having a birthday party for my sister (yes, New Years Day).

At midnight tonight a canon was fired by the authorities to mark the beginning of the New Year.

Happy New Year! (~4 hours)

Monday, 30 December, 2002
I spoke to my friend and he says that he is still looking for the material but suggested I go on to the Tanmia website. Apparently their research articles are published on their website. They are PDF files which I could try and download.

I immediately went on to the website and found the page he was referring to. Unfortunately, they were just synopsis of the actual research material but downloaded them anyway. I then sent them an email asking for further information.

I also spoke to an acquaintance/friend at a management consultancy who says that in the New Year he’ll try and put me in touch with people so that they are some of my primary sources. There was also someone he knew who had done his PhD in this area who he thinks would be a useful contact for information but was uncertain whether this person was still in the country. I am to contact him again in the New Year when most people will be available.

I emailed Anna about the development of my topic and chose two further advisors since of the 3 I had chosen earlier, namely Professors Cox, Gellerman and Guinn, only Prof Gellerman is available. I also wrote to Anna explaining my choice of topic and how I have tried to formulate a topic-question-problem as is suggested in ‘Craft of Research’. I also asked Anna to tell me how I am supposed to use ‘The Millionaire Mind’. Apparently I’m to spend at least 60 days on it and in conjunction with BUS1201.

In the evening I started reading ‘Craft of Research’ more carefully and began making notes. I didn’t get very far because by the time I started it it was already getting late. I did learn more about plagiarism and realised that sometimes plagiarising is more than just verbatim copying. Even paraphrasing can be plagiarising. Learned? Understand what you have read and then look away from the text as you write.

I went to the bookshop and purchased ‘The Millionaire Mind’ for my Core Practical Unit, Stanley on Business Success. I shall make a start on it soon. (2½ hour)

Sunday, 29 December, 2002
I looked up further sources on the internet, this time typing in “Tanmia”, a name that is synonymous with Emiratisation, and found more sights. A lot were repetitions of my search on Xmas Day and some were not.

I also photocopied some material I had seen in a journal at the office. My friend has not come back to me yet. (1½ hours)

Saturday, 28 December, 2002
Spent the afternoon working on my column. I also decided to pursue just Stanley on Business Success and found the book in the shop downstairs. I will buy it tomorrow. I tried to speak to someone I know in the Ministry of Information and Culture but got no response.

I spoke to a British friend who works for a National company called the Al Habtoor Group. He says that he did do some work in this area and says he’ll try and dig up some of his work for me to look at.

Friday, 27 December 2002
Spent time making notes from the websites I downloaded yesterday. I eliminated another one today for being unsuitable.

I am also thinking of following BUS1103 Carnegi on Leadership & Human Resources and/or 1110 Stanley on Business Success. However, before I decide I need to get hold of either How to win friends and Influence People’ and/or ‘The Millionaire Mind’. I must log on to Rushmore’s psources web page to enquire about the download. (~2 hours)

Boxing Day, 2002
I checked my emails as soon as I woke up this morning, before breakfast, in fact. Thankfully I received a response from both Anna and Prof Guinn. Immediately after receiving their response I began thinking about the topic they are interested in; the subject of Emiratisation. In fact, I believe I may find more resources for this topic than for my initial choice.

After breakfast I went on to the internet to see what info there was. I typed in “Localisation”, Emiratisation” and UAE and got around 12 articles. I went through the first of 12 I downloaded and made notes. Tomorrow I’ll form some questions for the areas I should cover in my theses.

Tomorrow I’ll go to the bookshop to see if there is anything available. I’ll also speak to some people in Government first thing Saturday, maybe they can point me in the right direction.

I am also required to choose a course from the CPC. Which one? I’ve short listed some. (~3 hours)

Christmas Day, 2002
The moment I awoke, around 10.00am, I checked for emails from Anna. Nothing, so I decided to send a second follow up email to Anna and this time one to Prof Guinn. I was hoping that if I had got their approval I could go ahead.

I decided to make a pre-emptive strike. In anticipation of Rushmore’s approval I decided to make preparations for my first choice.

I went to the residential complex library and found a couple of books, one of which was a recent publication. I also managed to speak to the Dubai Department of Economic Development. The man was so helpful and offered me a year book with statistics of the various industry sectors and their respective impacts on the UAE economy. I shall pop in next week since the Department is right behind the building I work in.

I read more ‘Craft of Research’ and gave further thoughts to the topic of my choice and exactly what I’m trying to research and where else the info may be available. I spent time re-writing the title and thinking about the questions I need to answer. I also asked myself who my target audience might be, apart from my advisors. I realised that it would be the economist of Dubai and business people. (4 hours)

Christmas Eve, 2002
I checked for any emails from Anna and nothing. I’m worried because I know that if I don’t get anything from her my 4 day break is going to be wasted. I sent her a follow up. May be I’ll hear tomorrow.

Saturday, 21 December 2002
Today I made my choices for the BUS1201 assignment. I have four and have listed them in order of preference. I also chose my advisors for the course and intend to email my document to Anna for her review and Rushmore’s official approval. (1½ hours)

I also wrote an email for a friend of mine who teaches at a local university. He says that if I give him a list of the books I need he can look in his college library. The chances are they won’t be but it’s worth a try.

It was a very hectic day on family related matters and thus was unable to read “Craft of Research”

Friday, 20 December 2002
Helped my sister out with some of her computer work. Spend a little bit of time on my BUS1201 journal and thinking about topics to study. (~2 hours).

Thursday, 19 December 2002
Mystery solved! I received an email from Anna saying that there was something wrong with their email addresses, that they have resolved the difficulties and to re-send the messages again. I then proceeded to email Anna the same request I sent to Prof Guinn. Since there is about 8-12 hours time difference, I don’t suppose I shall get a response until tomorrow.

However, I decided to check my emails before going to bed. Great news. I received a response from Prof Guinn advising that I follow my intention of going on to BUS1201, the literature review. I now need to email Anna my choice of topics for her review and to send me formal permission to begin. Hopefully, she’ll come back to me before Christmas Eve so that I can work on it during the 4 day break.

Thursday-Wednesday, 12 – 18 December 2002
I got BUS1002 journal feedback but am still waiting for confirmation to begin BUS1201. completely lost but decided to work on the editor’s suggestions for BUS1002 and I sent follow-up emails to request some information.

Thinking perhaps that Anna’s computer might have crashed the way Hella’s did before she went on leave I emailed my BUS1201 request to Prof Guinn. (~1 hours)

Wednesday, 11 December 2002
I emailed Anna to ask for confirmation to begin BUS1201. I also sent Anna a copy of my BUS1002 journal for her feedback.

Monday, 9 December 2002
I received an email from Anna with attachments containing Rushmore’s new template and changes in its course structure for Rushmore’s MBA programme. I was reading Business Research Methods in readiness for BUS1003, which no longer exists. The nearest equivalent to BUS1003 is 1201 which requires ‘The Craft of Research as the reference. I am uncertain as to my next step so at this point I have stopped reading ‘Business Research Methods and started skim reading ‘Craft of Research’. This book is easier to read than Business Research Methods.

Received a response from Anna for my email. Things are a little clearer I still need clear guideline for the next assignment. I have not had a clear response yet and that’s making me even more nervous. I’m also unclear about the next course. The changes have thrown things off for me. I had chosen 7 courses in addition to the foundation. I had also planned on either book reviews or research papers. Now there are other approaches which means I have to totally rethink my plans and because the credits for each course is now 2 rather than 3 I have to make up the credits by choosing more courses and consider other approaches. It was much easier following the foundation courses and have bought all the books for the foundation. (2 hours)

Sunday, 8 December 2002
Continued to skim read Business Research Methods. As I suspected the book is very complicated. Just to skim read may take weeks. I’m wondering if I should perhaps just read just those chapters that may be relevant to BUS1003.

Have begun to think about possible topics to research. Some just seem like they’ve been done over and over again. I had thought about subjects like ‘Why employees behave the way they do’, or Demings 14 TQM points and then it occurred to me that perhaps an area relevant to the UAE and Dubai particularly; some economic aspect. For instance, what measures is UAE putting in place for when the oil reserves run out.

I also emailed Anna to ask for further clarification on the new Rushmore template and credits for website, BUS1005, 1002, 1003 and 1001. The credits have changed. (2 hours)

Saturday, 7 December 2002
Started skim reading Business Research Methods. I think this reading, even at the skimming level is going to be difficult because the thickness of the book is very disconcerting. (2 hours)

Saturday 22 March 2003
The editor came back with his comments. Apart from the usual minor points he thought that as usual my paper was very well written. I incorporated most of his suggestions but not all.

The paper is not ready for grading. I am rather worried about the grade I might receive for this particular unit. Let’s hope it’s okay. I am now going to send it to Prof Zhao. (~2 hours)

Wednesday-Thursday 19-20 March 2003
Prof Zhao responded with his comments. On the whole the paper is fine except for a few minor comments. He asked me to incorporate more official business terms and to make my sentences shorter. I have to admit that the copyright training I have had and the fact that I have been a paralegal for some law firms has put me in the habit of using unusually long sentences. I also have to admit that I hadn’t realised I was doing so in this paper.

I re-read the entire paper and must concede that trying to incorporate business terms has been as difficult as doing the paper.

I put in the footnotes after shortening sentences and putting in more business terms. I also added an abbreviations page and the bibliography. Compared to the last papers that I completed the bibliography list in this case is remarkably short. In fact the footnotes are up to number 14!

The paper is currently at ~5,521 words but this may change when I have to incorporate the editor’s comments.

The paper is now ready for editing. I emailed it today. (~8 hours)

Friday 14 March 2003
I spend the day updating this journal and now I intend take one of Rushmore’s templates and completed it in readiness for cutting and pasting my paper for this journal.

Monday-Thursday 10-13 March 2003 Prof Zhao responded. He thought it was a very good first draft but it needed more work. As per his advice I divided the paper into two sections, the book summary being the first part and the second the case study. I have to admit that I haven’t really been certain as to how to apply a practical approach to the paper. Moreover, what I seem to have done, as observed by Prof. Zhao, is to apply every relevant principle from the book to my cylinder and to support those areas with irrelevant examples.

I re-read the book and this time I tried to see what my cylinder’s case needed and tried to find the principles in the book that were applicable to it.

Prof Zhao said I was supposed to present the case as a ‘live case study’ and which I tried to do.

I did some more research on the internet for material relating to a CTO, his role (I must admit that until Prof Zhao mentioned it I had no idea what it was and I actually did a word search on the Internet typing in ‘CTO role R&D’, which helped) and the typical structure of an R & D establishment as organised by this CTO. I also found a useful picture of a typical gas cylinder on the net that I intend to replace with the picture I drew in Appendix B.

I began to make the relevant changes to my paper and I am finding that the word count is decreasing as I delete/modify the existing and not so good material. I would also like to say that I am concerned about my paper and the grade I may receive…very worried to the extent that I am up until 3.00am almost every morning.

On Thursday afternoon, around 1.10pm, I emailed Draft2 of my paper. I hope I’m okay this time because I need not to exceed the one-on-one consulting time allotted to me and at the moment I don’t know. (~17½ hours)

Friday 7 March 2003
I attempted the advertising copy for the cylinder which I drew using the drawing tool in word. It actually looked 3 dimensional after I coloured and shaded it. I wrote a one-page advertising feature and labelled it ‘Appendix B’.

I put in the conclusion and revised some parts of the paper. I am currently at around 6,200 words, excluding the footnotes, quotes and Appendices A and B.

I did a final read of the paper, making emendments as I went and then decided it was ready to email to Prof Zhao for his initial comments. If it is okay (I wonder…I hope it is) I will put it in the Rushmore format and then send it to the editor.

I emailed Prof Zhao at around 10.45pm. (~4 hours)

Thursday 6 March 2003
Today I covered staffing, performance measures, structures and brainstorming in my paper. I also attempted to compose an ‘entrepreneurial policy’ document and called it Appendix A. I thought that rather than submit separate documents it might be easier to be able to attach a single file to my email rather than the paper, its journal and any documents I create. Tomorrow I shall attempt an advertising copy for my cylinder.

I am currently at 6,500 words including footnotes and quotes. I also moved bits and pieces around the page. I am concerned about whether my paper is on the right track. I haven’t the slightest idea how to write an entrepreneurial policy statement and what I have put together is largely based on the information provided by Drucker chapter. I worked until 3.00am. Very tired! (~3 hours)

Wednesday 5 March 2003
I went on to the internet today and looked up ‘Entrepreneurial Policies” under google.com. I found nothing except vague references to Drucker’s coverage in his book. I made extensive notes on Entrepreneurial Practices. (~3 hours)

Tuesday 4 March 2003
Today I did the bulk of my work by making notes on entrepreneurial practices. I thoroughly read the relevant section in Drucker’s book and looked at Foster’s book, ‘The Attacker’s Advantage’ and ‘The Art of Innovation’ by Kelley. (~3 hours)

Monday 3 March 2003
I re-did diagrams 3 and 4 to make them clearer. I also discussed value innovation and the perceptivity gamble.

Later I moved on to Entrepreneurial Management which I really need to get my head around. I made notes and read chapter 13, all the time considering which sections apply to my cylinder. I am really concerned about the contents of my paper. I wonder if I’ve got it right.

I worked until 2.00am. (~5 hours)

Sunday 2 March 2003
I continued working on my paper. I discussed another theory put forward by two researcher Katila and Ahuja who propounded a theory regarding new and existing knowledge. I decided to plot two more graphs to illustrate the relationship between new knowledge versus product output and new knowledge plus existing knowledge versus product output. In my paper I also covered convergence, the risks involved in using new knowledge to innovate and customer values. (~5 hours)

Saturday 1 March 2003
I did not work on my paper today. Since I’m behind in my column I decided to work on that for the rest of the day.

Late at night, around midnight, I decided to resume working on my paper. I hope I have the right approach this time. I did some more work on the S-Curve and began on my interpretation of it as it would apply to my cylinder.

All the time I am writing I try to remember Prof Zhao’s advice about making sure I’m not thinning out to much in order to keep the bulk of my paper in perspective. Good advice. (~1¾ hours)

Friday 28 February 2003
I looked at my S-Curve again and it looked really bad. Talk about unprofessional. I re-thought my approach and tried Power Point but discovered it has its limitations. It will draw a scatter graph in the shape of an ‘S’ but those curves are not curves but sharp angles. No matter what I did I could not smooth those angles out. I couldn’t find a facility in Power Point that would allow me to do that.

I then tried another approach. This time I plotted a graph using Microsoft Excel. It worked. I even managed to curve out the angles into an ‘S’ shape. It certainly looked better and more professional than my first attempt. (4 hours)

Thursday 27 February 2003
Today I worked on my paper but not in any particular order. Like the research paper I did for 1201 I thought it might help me if I got something down on paper; it would at least give me a focal point.

Since I wanted to discuss the S-Curve I thought it might be an idea to put it in the paper and I tried doing so using the drawing tool. It does not look wonderful. Maybe another approach? (~1½ hours)

Wednesday 26 February 2003
Today I went on to the internet again and this time did a word search using google.com. My criteria were “Innovation”, “New Knowledge” and Drucker. I did find some articles but the fonts were so tiny that they were impossible to read even at their largest setting. With difficulty I made notes, nevertheless. A lot of the material on Drucker’s ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ was a regurgitation of its contents and quite useless. (~3 hours)

Tuesday 25 February 2003
Today I read through and made notes from some of the material I had downloaded from the internet yesterday. I re-read ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ and ‘The Attacker’s Advantage’ by Richard Foster. The more I read Drucker’s book the better my understanding has become. Foster’s book makes an issue of the S-Curve which Drucker does not even mention. I wonder why that is. According to Foster the S-Curve is a vital tool for the entrepreneur. I think I will discuss the S-Curve in my paper. (~3 hours)

Monday 24 February 2003
Prof Zhao emailed me back approving my new approach. I looked at Rushmore’s website again and the internet generally to see if I could find any useful websites. I found some good articles in the Rushmore online library and a couple of useful articles on the web by doing word searches for ‘source new knowledge’.

I also went down to the complex library again and found a book called the ‘Entrepreneur’s Manual’ It didn’t really help but it was useful background reading just the same. (~1 hour)

Saturday 22 February 2003
I checked my hotmail for a possible response from Prof Zhao. I still think it’s a bit soon. I did have a look at some websites using the words ‘source new knowledge’ as my search criteria. I did find some things that I downloaded. I haven’t had the chance to look at them yet because I spent a lot of time completing my column and updating this learning journals and the one for 1110 Stanley on Success. (~5 hours) Friday 21 February 2003
I think it’s a bit too soon for a response from Prof Zhao. Instead I worked on my column for Tuesday. I can honestly admit that I am clean out of ideas.

Thursday 20 February 2003
I read both books more thoroughly and think that Prof Zhao wants me to demonstrate that I have understood all the steps involved in conceiving to implementing an innovation. (I hope that’s what he wants). I have an idea for a metre attached to the gas cylinder everyone uses for cooking. The problem is that we can never tell when the gas is about to run out. I decided to pick out only those areas that were relevant to the innovation and its source.

I typed up my modified approach and emailed it at about 2.00am Friday 21 February 2003. I couldn’t sleep after that because I was so tired. (~6 hours)

Wednesday 19 February 2003 Prof Zhao responded and as I suspected my approach was okay but the strategy was all wrong. I need to demonstrate that I have MASTERED the book and I have to admit that I hadn’t read it as well as I should have.

I spend time re-reading the book thoroughly. I racked my brain all day and I now think I know what Prof Zhao is looking for. I stayed up until 2.00 am until I hit upon an idea. I also read ‘The Art of Innovation’ by Tom Kelley which helped a lot. (~5 hours)

Sunday 16 February 2003
I began work on some of the items on the agenda I emailed Prof Zhao. I also had a look at some of the students and then it struck me. My whole strategy for the approach is wrong! (~1½ hours)

Saturday, 15 February 2003
I received a grade for BUS1201. I received an ‘A’!

I emailed my outline to Prof Zhao for his feedback. I will then start on my main points after I receive his feedback. I’ll check this evening for any responses. Mind you it’s the weekend in the States now so I may not here until Monday.

Started on my column and spent the time working on that. I managed to come up with something that I can email tomorrow morning.

Friday, 14 February 2003
I spent time reading up about staff motivation, the Expectancy Theory of Motivation and I decided to go through the files I downloaded from Rushmore’s library. The library is invaluable for people like me who live in Dubai and have little local material to access. I found some of the material on customer values really useful. I read through my downloads and made notes. I also revised my letter to Prof Zhao so that I can email it to him if he can find the time to be my advisor.

I also made a rough start on my thesis. I thought I could start with an introduction to why motivation of employees is so important and with an incident that occurred with my assistant when I was at CLA and when I was at Talal Abu Ghazaleh.

Late in the evening I checked my email and was delighted to receive an email from Prof Zhao. Tomorrow morning I shall email my outline to him for his comments.

I’m a bit stuck for an idea for my column. What shall I write about? (~4 hours)

Wednesday 12 February 2003
I received an email that Prof Zhao may be my advisor. If he agrees he has been asked to contact me.

I worked on my outline of the areas I intent to cover to email to Prof Zhao if he agrees. It is now ready for emailing in the event that he is able to be my advisor.

I need to look up the following on the internet: Cutomer value, customer relations and staff motivation. I thought I might start my paper with a very brief theoretical discussion of the above areas and as to why I have chosen them as my objects for my paper. I would then move on to the actual simulated work.

Late in the evening I went on to the Rushmore library and found some articles on staff motivation, customer values/relations.

No word from Prof Zhao about being my advisor. Tomorrow I’ll start on menus, agendas, etc. (2 hours 50 minutes)

Tuesday 11 February 2003
Spent the day formulating a plan of action for the simulated project in a future office. I deliberated the costs, the agenda, the type of presentations, letters seeking approvals, etc. (~5 hours)

Sunday 9 February 2003
I have an idea for my paper. I shall simulate working in medium size organisation in a middle management position and would like to boost staff morale whilst at the same time improve customer relations by delivering customer values. A bimonthly event for clients at our offices to include presentations, Q&A, lunch and meeting all staff. Put ideas down on paper and submit simulated presentations, agendas, letters, memos, etc with my thesis to Rushmore as part of the course.

Friday 7 February 2003
Completed skim reading of the book. I then went back to read bits and pieces again, especially chapter 13(III), Entrepreneurial Practices in the Entrepreneurial Business. (~4 hours)

Thursday 6 February 2003
I continued to skim read from chapter 8 onwards. Although the book is not very well laid out it is easy to read in terms of its language. As you read many ideas come to mind that you could use. Some of the ideas have already been covered. I particularly found chapter 13 interesting, re – Entrepreneurial Practices under 13(III). There are always new approaches to a work problem.

I’ve always found staff motivation and respect lacking in organisations, certainly for some employees. (~3 hours)

Wednesday 5 February 2003
Just completed chapter 7. The book is full of useful case studies. The demographics discussion reminded me of the Emiratisation project I recently completed. The idea of innovation is to look for opportunities and missing links.

Tomorrow I’ll begin on chapter 8. As yet no word from Hella/Anna about my email of Monday. Hopefully I’ll hear tomorrow. (3 hours)

Tuesday 4 February 2003
I skim read the introduction and realise that the layout of the book is not reader friendly. There are no subheadings at all to break the monotony of long paragraphs. The book begins with a discussion of what innovation traditionally means (an invention) and its meaning in the modern world.

Peter Drucker discusses the real meaning of management and how it doesn’t just apply to large corporations. It applies to small organisations and to public sector institutions like hospitals. The area that I find interesting is how the process of management can be innovative. (50 mins)

Monday 3 February 2003
I began inspectional reading of Innovation and Entrepreneurship by Peter Drucker, my main resource for this course.

I also emailed Anna/Hella for permission to begin and to request an advisor. (½ hour)

Journal for BUS1110 Stanley on Success

Birjees Sarwat Hussain

Sunday- Monday 6-14 April 2003 (Day 38-46)
The manager came back to me. He said his contacts will be able to help but each table would cost Dh80 (~$22) (Dh80 x 2 = Dh160 ≡ ~$44).

The second hand tables cost us Dh30 (~$8) each (~$16). We’d actually bought them from the apartment complex. They were having a warehouse sale.

Taking the cost of buying brand new tables and the cost of refinishing, the saving were Dh1,255. A new table would cost around ~Dh1,450

Thursday 3 April 2003 (Day 37)
The manager said there was no furniture restorer as such in Dubai. As I assumed, people tended to buy stuff from Ikea or Pan Emirates Furniture in Sharjah.

However, not all was lost. He said he could speak to friends in the furniture sale business and see if he could persuade them to sort the coffee tables the way he had done for the office chairs. He said he’d come back to us next week.

Monday 1 April 2003 (Day 36)
I rang the manager of the shop who knew me from my previous job. He said he’d find out and come back to me in a couple if days.

I found very little in the yellow page. Perhaps people don’t restore anything in the UAE.

Sunday 30 March 2003 (Day 35)
The people in housekeeping were not able to find anything out. We then called the man who upholstered out chairs. We thought since he’s in the business of restoring chairs, he might know something about furniture. He didn’t know anything either.

I know what they need. Sanding, varnishing polishing. Sound so simple. I started looking through the yellow pages and while I was looking it suddenly occurred to me that perhaps furniture restoration is not the done thing here.

Then I was reminded of something. About 18 months ago, an office I temporarily worked for had some office chairs reupholstered so that they would match the newly bought ones.

Saturday 29 March 2003 (Day 34)
We’re really on a roll now. Our reupholstered chairs looked so nice that we decided that we could do something about our rosewood coffee tables. We bought them second hand about two years ago. Despite them being scratched they were just the design we were looking for. We bought them and sold our marble top ones. They were nice but their shapes were all wrong.

We called the apartment complex housekeeping for their advice about where to go. They said they’d try and find out and come back to us.

Tuesday 25 Mar 2003 (Day 33)
Ran out of rice and flour and saw an excellent savings offer in the supermarket. Decided to buy several packets in bulk.

Monday 24 March 2003 (Day 32)
Had a further look at the household expenses and decided that soft drinks should be cut out of our expenses. Apart from the fact that they are unhealthy they cost money too. So from now on no more coke or 7-up.

Sunday 23 March 2003 (Day 31)
We’ve actually cut down on takeaways. They can’t be good for you and surely there must be something healthier for tea. We’re also contemplating buying water from ‘Oasis” who provide those water dispensers. We thought we could use those for cooking and making tea rather than the bottled stuff.

Saturday 22 March 2003 (Day 30)
Discussions on my expenses sheets and quite a shock because of the budget for the month at least Dh1,500 is unaccounted for. I did point out that although my accounting starts from around the second week of March I have not been able to add all the bills. For example, the many Burger King orders and probably others from the pharmacy. Some of the products are quite expensive, around Dh40 per item ($11 per product).

Now the families is saying that they’d rather I didn’t keep records but I replied (as Magnus Magnusson would say in his quiz show ‘Master Mind’) “I’ve started so I’ll finish”. I think they find it shocking that at least Dh1,500 ($408) is unaccounted for. Discussions have now begun in an attempt to recall what was spent where. Currently the ‘culprits’ are the numerous Neutrogena face products my sisters are buying.

Also another shopping trip to Spinneys and a telephone order to Lal’s to save time.

Friday 21 March 2003 (Day 29)
More shopping with floor plan and more receipts to add to my budgeting file. Just having a look at them it’s hard to see where economy can be made. However, items, like the spices and personal care products that can be bought in bulk from a cheaper shop, like Carrefour are in red font.

I also decided that one shopping list was proving to be a tad complicated. I decide therefore to devise 4 identical shopping lists but one for each supermarket / pharmacy.

Tomorrow I must ring my friend about that table. Since I haven’t heard from him I think I can assume that my idea, although a good one, went down the tube.

Saturday-Thursday 15-20 Mar 2003 (Day 23-28)
Input all the household expenses on the Excel worksheets. Today, (Thursday) I decided to make the sheets clearer by doing a breakdown of what is spent in which shop. The breakdown was into Lals, Spinneys, Carrefour, Port Saeed Gas, Sultan Pharmacy and Takeaways.

I have also re-organised the filing system for the receipts. A separate compartment for each shop/supermarket and in the order they come in. It has certainly made it easier to find.

Friday 14 Mar 2003 (Day 22)
Major Shopping trip today armed with my floor plan and shopping list. Some things were deliberately left off the list for another supermarket that actually delivers at a phone call.

Thursday 13 Mar 2003 (Day 21)
There was no shopping today but one of my sisters has been collecting Air Mile for a few months. For a long time we have really needed a cordless telephone to stop my parents having to run for the phone every time it rings. We had a look around for prices and a good quality cost around Dh250 ($68). Today we went on the internet and cashed in some of my sisters Air Miles (~28,000) for Siemens cordless telephone. We still have 1,000 Air Miles remaining. Time to start accumulating again

Monday-Wednesday 10-12 Mar 2003 (Days 18-20)
I continued to update my household expenses sheet. Everybody at home knows that when they come back from a shopping trip or have ordered something all receipts come to me for totalling. So far the figure is really escalating and I daren’t tell anyone in the family for fear of giving them a shock. The shock will come from the fact that the total so far is JUST FOR FOOD! It may perhaps encourage us to shop more at Carrefour.

Sunday 9 March 2003 (Day 17)
Instead of just a table for the household accounts I decided on an Excel worksheet that would automatically calculate weekly expenses. I created it and inserted our expenditure for the week beginning 2 March 2003. I also included a column in Amount Spent in US$ for the benefit of my university professors. I am amazed that in one week we’ve spend ~US$266. It is alarming that this figure does not even include every shopping receipt and it’s all food!

I went to the supermarket today. The floor plan went up the creek because the supermarket had moved what I was looking for from one freezer section to another. It took me ages to find the spring rolls. I eventually found them. I knew where the ice cream was and was able to find it but the search for the spring rolls added about 5 minutes to my shopping time. I was quite annoyed because we needed them in a hurry and I wanted to get back to my skim reading for BUS2003 Crosby on Quality.

Saturday 8 March 2003 (Day 16)
Today I decided to design a shopping list that could be filled in regularly by every member of the family rather than at the last minute which is what usually happens at home. Things always get forgotten when making lists like this.

Aware that I was doing 1110 as part of my MBA, one of my sisters asked whether I’d like to keep an account of our household expenses. I agreed and decided that I’d create an excel table for it and run up a monthly total. It’s calculated using MS Excel which automatically does a tally. Even if it isn’t very millionairish it would at least help us to keep tabs on what we spend and where.

From today every shopping receipt is to come my way. I have decided to file them in my little MBA journal that has a pocket on the inside cover.

Wednesday 5 March 2003 (Day 15)
Today we made a trip to Carrefour in another shopping mall to buy non-perishable household goods in bulk. Things like shampoo, toilet roll, hand cream, deodorant, shower gel and cooking spices that tend to have a long shelf life. I did not draw a floor plan because the shop is too huge and since this is the first time we are frequenting it so often I don’t know its layout very well. As an example, we bought 6 bottles of ‘Oil of Ulay’ at Dh15 a bottle. In the shop downstairs each bottle is over Dh20! A packet of Xg ‘Lipton’ retails at Dh36 downstairs. At Carrefour the same packet retails at Dh20 and currently there is an offer of a free tea caddy.

Monday 3 March 2003 (Day 14)
Went to one of the largest supermarkets in the UAE, Carrefour. Renowned for competitive prices and bulk purchases. Spent Dh481. Bought shampoos, shower gels, tissues and some spices in bulk. The same purchases in Lal’s would have cost at least Dh100 more.

Monday 24 February 2003 (Day 13)
This use of the new Al Wasl service is really discouraging my sisters from using their phones. They used to use them even for making local calls which are absolutely free in Dubai. Never before has our home line been so busy, and think of the savings! [Currently 1080 (quarterly rental for 3 mobiles) – 600 (First year Al Wasl rental charge for 3 mobiles) = 480.

Saturday 22 February 2003 (Day 12)
I spoke to my friend who works on the ‘Dubai Marina’ site. At first he laughed and then stopped when he realised I was being serious. I then explained why I was suggesting this. He says he’ll look into it.

Friday 21 February 2003 (Day 11)
Something just occurred to me about the foldaway, lightweight table I could do with. How about if I asked one of my sister’s friends who works on-site at the ‘Dubai Marina’ project? He’s friends with me too.

Thursday 20 February 2003 (Day 10)
We went to Carrefour to buy spices, toilet roll, tissues, shampoo, shower gel, deodorants and washing powder in bulk. The price of things at Carrefour tends to be Dh2-3 (sometimes more) less than at most other supermarkets. I suppose that’s why the whole of Dubai shops there.

Wednesday 19 February 2003 (Day 9)
I am really having trouble studying with things resting on my lap. The flat is too small and already crammed with our furniture so even if I bought a table it would have no home. I discussed my idea of a foldaway table (perhaps second hand or a cheap hardware shop). I rang around but found that and nobody understood what I was saying. I would like it to be lightweight and easily fold away.

Monday 17 February 2003 (Day 8)
The upholsterer brought our 8 chairs back.

Dh50 per chair = Dh400 (~$109)
Dh224 for all the chairs = Dh224 (~$61)
Dh = Dh176 (~$48) (saving)

My sister went shopping armed with my floor plan with all its labels and markings. It’s become a bit of a laughing point in our house but everyone’s cooperating because it is for my course.

I have also suggested that all my sisters, only one of whom has agreed, switch to the Al Wasl mobile phone service. I’ve had it for 2 years and have barely spent anything on phone calls and only pay as I go, rather than paying Dh90 per quarter in addition to the call charges (Dh0.90 fils/minutes) ($0.24). That’s Dh360 plus however long the call is. I paid Dh200 for the initial connection and only Dh100 per year for subsequent renewals. Call charges are limited to the value of the pre-paid card. Moreover, it can be used on any phone, not just mobiles. Since getting my mobile I make very few calls on it, unless it’s an emergency.

Saturday 15 February 2003 (Day 7)
The upholsterer came by with his material swatches. The prices varied from Dh7 (~$1.91) to Dh20 (~$5.44). The cheaper ones looked their price. I quite liked a material that matched our current sofa set. The match was uncanny. The price to cover the seats of our chairs was Dh18 (~$4.90) per chair and he said he would bring it back in 3 days. The cost would be Dh80 (~$21.80) for the labour and Dh18 for the material for each chair. Total cost Dh224 (~$61.03). Let’s see how the chairs turn out. We’re also running out of groceries in our house but we have decided that since Monday is market day at the supermarket we’ll do the bulk of our shopping then.

Since my father’s been travelling to Pakistan quite a lot lately we’ve been making a lot of long distant telephone calls. Since we can’t change our telephone provider (there is no other out in the UAE, other than Etisalat) I suggested using prepaid telephone cards for all long distant telephone calls. I have also suggested that my sister’s use prepaid phone cards when using their mobiles. Each call would be limited to Dh30 maximum (~$8.17) and last around 5 minutes.

Friday 14 February 2003 (Day 6)
One of my sisters went shopping. I gave her the floor plan and my strategic shopping list and asked her to stick to it. No more, no less. She laughed at first and refused to take it with her. However, upon her return she said it did save her from having to drag the trolley back and forth for items.

Thursday 13 February 2003 (Day 5)
The man came to give us an estimate for the chairs. He says that the labour cost would be Dh10 for each chair plus the cost of the fabric which would depend upon the one we chose. On Saturday he’ll bring the sample fabrics round and a sample of a seat he had covered for the woman downstairs.

Wednesday 12 February 2003 (Day 4)
Spent time drawing floor plan of Lal’s supermarket on the computer and printed copies. It was fun. Now, whenever we go shopping I’ll take a highlighter and highlight the areas of concern. I also designed a shopping list. The items on the list should be listed in the order they appear in the shop. It would save time from wheeling the shopping trolley back and forth. I have also decided that we take a calculator with us so that we can calculate the costs as we go.

Tuesday 11 February 2003 (Day 3)
We decided that the chairs needed upholstering. Spoke to a neighbour who often has her furniture redone. She gave us the name of a man who comes in regularly. I have his telephone number. There are 8 chairs and only their seats have cushion.

Monday 10 February 2003 (Day 2)
Went to the supermarket to double check on items we usually buy and their location.

Saturday 8 February 2003 (Day 1)
I spent time formulating a plan of action. There are 3 areas that I can attempt and strangely enough have attempted before. Re-upholstering the 8 dining room chairs, do a floor plan of the supermarket downstairs and buying bulk.

Sunday 19 January 2003
I spent time re-reading parts of the book. I think that running an economically productive household is something most people can do. (1½ hours)

Saturday 18 January 2003
Spent the whole day going back and forth on every aspect of what I had read and wondering whether there is any aspect/rule I can implement or simulate in current life or in the future.

Thursday 9 January 2003
I was off-sick from work today but still managed to continue skim reading ‘The Millionaire Mind’. (~2 hours)

Tuesday - Wednesday 30 December - 8 January 2003
I spent between 1-1½ hours a day skim reading ‘The Millionaire Mind’. (~12 hours)

Journal for BUS2003 Crosby on Quality Management

Birjees Sarwat Hussain

Sunday 20 May 2003
Today I put the footnotes, and bibliography into the paper. I then emailed it to the editor for his input.

I then spent time updating this journal. I now have to start thinking about putting the paper on the website for 1111. (~2 hours)

Saturday 19 April 2003
I spent time finishing off my paper. I read it through twice just to make sure it made sense. I finished with a conclusion saying that in many ways quality was like copyright. You can’t feel it or measure it in the traditional sense but it’s there. I also thought about changing the name of the paint manufacturer to something a little more ‘arty’. At around 4.00pm I decided to email my paper to Prof Smith for his feedback.

Later in the afternoon I worked on my column. It’s about the funny side of life and Tommy Cooper and his jokes.

Between 10.00 and 11.30pm I completed the painting I had started about 10 days ago. It too is ready for posting. I don’t really care if it doesn’t get chosen for the member’s gallery on this occasion. I’m just glad I started painting again after almost 3 years! Linda will be so pleased. She’s sent me so many inspirational videos for free to get me started but nothing seemed to work.

At around 1.00am I decided to email my column for the paper. I also noticed with amazement that Prof Smith had responded. My paper is now ready for editing/grading. (~3 hours)

Friday 18 April 2003
I discussed the ECR step and decided that my simulated company should visit the QMMG again as a form of comparison.

I also had a lot to say about the recognition step, in some cases disagreeing with Crosby’s suggestion of non-monetary incentives. I don’t believe that a simple pat-on-the-back would encourage employees to participate. I have now come to the Make Certain Programme and have decided to go back to the Quality Step and incorporate it in that. (~8 hours)

Thursday 17 April 2003
I worked for a solid period, stopping only for food and an hour’s shopping trip. I managed to complete steps 5 – 10. I found planning ZD day fun and discussing the actual even exciting. So much could be planned for that day. Of course, one has to be cost conscious. Perhaps a percentage of the savings from the COQ could be put towards the event.

When I arrived at step 11 I felt I needed some additional ideas. So I also went onto the internet to download some material on Error-Cause Removal (ECR). I found one that was quite useful, since it gave me an idea of how other firms have faired with the ECR approach. (~7 hours)

Monday – Wednesday 14 – 16 April 2003
I spent time reading about the statistical process control (SPC) method of sampling data, the aspects of an effective quality improvement team and the use of six sigma in quality measures. I managed to write up to Step 4 and have stopped at assessing the cost of quality as broken down into the various causes of the costs incurred.

I did a fair amount of reading into SPC and the various charts used to depict the results. The Business Excellence Model is useful in measuring quality and I discussed the role of the assessment process. (~18 hours)

Sunday 13 April 2003
Today I read and made notes for 2 hours from a document I downloaded from the internet about the Cost of Quality and quality improvement. And I found a case study for Toyota in Australia. Very interesting.

I also spent time putting the contents of this journal in electronic form. (~5 hours)

Saturday 12 April 2003
Today I went onto Rushmore’s internet library and was please to find some really useful articles. My search criteria were ‘Quality Improvement Programme’ and ‘Cost of Quality’. Later I made notes from them. They helped enormously.

I also needed to work on my column for this week. I hadn’t a clue what I was going to say until I sat down in from of my computer. After about 2 hours of writing I managed to come up with an 800 word column that ended up making me laugh at the sort of angles I could take with ideas. I thought it was quite amusing although the story was quite serious.

Later in the evening after dinner I got my paints outs and went to work on my painting. At least that’s looking like I want it to, even though it may not get in to the members’ gallery. (~4 hours)

Friday 11 April 2003
I checked my email to see if there was any response from Rushmore to my request of an update of the total number of credits I had accumulated to date.

I spent the morning and the late evening trying to devise a background for my simulated company. Since I enjoy painting, I decided on a paint manufacturer. I did some background reading on how paint is made because I think a little knowledge in that area will help in my understanding of the problems that might occur. I thought about the possible turnover, production level and possible quality problems that might occur. I also found some information as to the sorts of departments that might be involved.

I also need to make a start on my column. What on earth am I going to write about this week? (~4 hours)

Thursday 10 April 2003
I began part 2 of the paper late in the evening because I couldn’t really do much during the day. I made a start to the introduction and began thinking about the type of organisation that might be involved. I want it to be a manufacturing company and not service industry. I thought about a car repair shop… (1½ hours)

Wednesday 9 April 2003
My column came out!

I spent time reading and making notes from the articles I had downloaded from the internet last night.

I shuffled contents about on the pages I had already written. I gave only brief coverage to the Business Excellence Model (BEM) and Six Sigma and changed its location on the paper. I also deleted the excess information in the first part but find I am still in the 2,000 word area.

I found quite a nice picture of the BEM model which I intend to use as an illustration in my paper. I now intend to begin the second and bulk of the paper; the practical application of the theory. Here goes!

I also have to start thinking about my column and I didn’t get the chance to do any painting. I have a deadline of around 23 April 2003. (~3 hours)

Tuesday 8 April 2003
I was most vexed today because my column failed to appear. I later learned from the editor had he’d been off sick for a couple of days and this was probably the reason but he couldn’t be sure. However, he reassured me that it would appear tomorrow.

I revised the pages I had completed and moved contents around. I know this might seem a little premature and usually left until after the paper is completed.

I studied Deming’s 14 points and made further comparisons with Crosby’s 14 step programme. They’re similar in so many respects.

I re-read the book on BEM and the information I managed to find on the internet about Six Sigma. Both have their origins in Total Quality Management (TQM). I just want to touch upon it briefly with a couple of brief paragraphs for each. I am also keeping in mind the proportion of the paper I should allocate to the two parts. 35% to 65%. (5 hours)

Monday 7 April 2003
I was extremely worried about my paper. Although my outline seems solid (Prof Smith’s words) I was unsure I would be able to handle it.

Today I woke up early to tackle the part I have been dreading. I tackled the erroneous assumptions and put more in about Deming’s philosophy. I now intend to discuss his 14 points and put a comparison in with Crosby’s 14 step programme. I found many similarities but also a couple of areas where they disagree. I worked from 9.30 am – 12.30pm, from ~2.30pm – 4.30pm and then ~7.30pm – 9.00pm.

I resumed my painting, the composition of which I am satisfied with. (6 hours)

Sunday 6 April 2003
I found a good article about the TQM or Performance Appraisal (PA). Crosby is for PA/rewards/recognition schemes but Deming is not. I tend to agree with Crosby. The article says that if you disagree with point 12 of Deming’s 14 points the other 13 fall apart. (1¼ hours)

Saturday 5 April 2003
I spent the morning reading and making notes from one of the downloads.

I also spent 2 hours after lunch on my column. I then gave my myself a 2 hour break and another 2 hours on my entry to the ‘Shade of Green’ theme for my art society.

Later in the evening I resumed studying the BEM. (3½ hours)

Friday 4 April 2003
Tried to make a comparison between Crosby and Deming and began to understand the differences and similarities of their respective approaches. I typed the paper as I went. I still haven’t started my journal in electronic form. It’s currently handwritten in a black book that I make entries into at the end of the day. (~2 hours)

Thursday 3 April 2003
Began on the opening of my paper. I started with an introduction to the paper and why I’ve chosen this particular unit. I thought, to start off, I might discuss both Crosby and Deming and their respective approaches; where they agree and where they appear to disagree. The 14 steps to the Quality Improvement Programme of Crosby and Deming’s 14 points, both of which are different to an extent.

This time I decided to begin my draft on an actual Rushmore template because I remember the last time I struggled with the formatting when I cut and pasted the document from an ordinary word document on to the template. All my graphs and tables went funny. I need to make a start on my electronic journal. (3 hours)

Wednesday 2 April 2003
I’ve decided to alter my study routine to incorporate my painting project. 2 hours studying in the morning before lunch; 2 hours from 3-5pm, 9-12pm drawing and painting and then resuming my course from 12-2am.

Tuesday 1 April 2003
Got an A- for 2045 Drucker on Entrepreneurship.

Couldn’t study at all today. I am really tired. It’s all these 2.00am stay ups and rising early.

I tried to draw for the competition instead. Resumed studying around midnight 2.00am making notes on Crosby. (2 hours)

Monday 31 March 2003
Made notes from my downloads about Deming. I learned the 14 steps. I think they’re in the wrong order. Surprise surprise. My art magazine turned up early this quarter which means I’m in time for the member’s gallery painting competition. The deadline is 5 May. I therefore have about 3 weeks to think of something, paint it and post it. (2 hours)

Saturday-Sunday 29-30 March 2003
Continued making notes on six Sigma. My intention is to touch upon it to make the point that six sigma has a quality function. (~1½ hours)

Friday 28 March 2003
I made notes on Six Sigma from the downloads. I also read about Quality in Peter’s ‘In Search of Excellence’ and he doesn’t appear to have much faith in quality. He refers to the pursuit of quality as an ‘obsession’. (~2 hours)

Thursday 27 March 2003
I spent time on the internet looking for information about Deming’s 14 points, his background and that of Crosby. I also found some good information on Six Sigma. (1 hour 20 mins)

Wednesday 26 March 2003
I put together a rough outline of my intended approach to this unit and emailed it to Prof Smith today.

I understand more of the book on my second read. UAEWC is now more enlightening, (no pun intended). I found some information on the Balanced Score Card (BSC) which I would like to cover in my paper along with the BEM.

I continued skim reading Quality is Free. I paid special attention to the Quality Policy and intend to go back to it to read more thoroughly. I hadn’t realised that a Quality Manager was held in such high regard. Most people in the UAE think it’s a second rate job and demeaning for a university graduate. This is total opposite to what Crosby suggests, I’m pleased to say.

Prof Smith responded to my email this evening (so quick) with his comments on my rough outline. He said it was solid but the six Sigma was not. I would like to cover BEM and Six Sigma in my paper. (~3 hours)

Tuesday 25 March 2003
I re-read and understood the Quality Management Maturity Grid. (1 hours)

Monday 24 March 2003
I completed skim reading Quality is Free (10 minutes).

I now intend to go back and the read the book more thoroughly thinking of a plan for the paper. (~1½ hours)

Sunday 23 March 2003
The DQA book on the Business Excellence Model arrived. It is about 1cm in thickness and divided into 3 chapters and an appendix. Very substantial.

I skim read Quality is Free. (20 minutes)

Tuesday 18 March 2003
I didn’t get to do that much work today. Any that I managed was in dribs and drabs. I continued to read Quality Improvement Programme. I also spoke to the Dubai Quality Awards who have published a book on the Business Excellence Model and it’s available free to any interested party. The woman answering the phone was happy to post it to me tomorrow. I wonder if it’ll arrive or I’ll have to go there personally.

I emailed Prof McManus about a possible approach to this unit and put the idea of beginning this unit without officially completing 2045. I have decided that once I’ve actually completed skim reading Quality is Free, to go back and read it more carefully and to make detailed notes of the 3 points covered in Crosby’s book. Namely Quality Management Maturity Grid, Quality Improvement Programme and the Make Certain Programme. It is a readable book and because of this the information is sinking in. (~45 minutes)

Monday 17 March 2003
I like Crosby’s writing style. He makes analogies that are easy to imagine. For example the Ballet/Hockey style of Quality Management. Ballet being ordered; hockey being disordered.

I completed skim reading part one of the book.

Part two of Quality is to minimise errors and hence defects. There should not be an acceptable level of errors and management seems to foresee it and accept it as something that is inherent in work involving humans.

I would like to b able to set up and run a quality management system ad wonder whether this is the HPA Quality Improvement Programme. (1¼ hours)

Sunday 16 March 2003
I’ve come across questions and Quality Improvement Self-Evaluation questionnaires. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to answer them. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to answer them. I shall nevertheless think about them.

I found Case History 3 on page 95 of the book very interesting. Proper people management is so important that in the midst of managing actual day to day operations of a company they are all too often forgotten. (2 hours)

Saturday 15 March 2003
The readability of the book’s amazing. Even at the skim reading stage information is sinking in. I think the numerous case histories are an excellent way to deliver information and make them more understandable. (~2 hours)

Friday 14 March 2003
The case studies hep provide a better understanding of the Quality Management Maturity Grid. (1 hour 35 mins)

Sunday 9 March 2003
I began skim reading Quality is Free. The book is very readable with good non-pictorial images to drive the point home, e.g. the analogy about managing from afar as compared to actually being in the midst of it, and about how management look for problems in the wrong places. (1 hour)

Journal for BUS2039 Smith on Economics

Birjees Sarwat Hussain

Thursday 29 May 2003
I downloaded the paper Laurel emailed back to me with her editorial. I incorporated them but sadly my word count has gone up somewhat. I do hope I don’t get penalised for it. I did everything I could to reduce by I had to stop at some point.
(1½ hours)

Tuesday 27 May 2003
Prof Guinn came back to me regarding my paper. He had no comments on the paper except that I should feel free to send it to Laurel for editing. Before doing so I checked the paper once again, put the bibliography in and the table of contents. I then emailed the paper to Laurel.
(½ hour)

Monday 26 May 2003
Today I discussed the Management By Objectives (MBO) cycle. I recently found a nice diagram on a website that I had saved in my picture folder for the use in this paper. I discussed the advantages and disadvantages of competition in the workplace due to bad implementation of the technique by management. After putting in the conclusion the word count of my draft is 3,074 excluding the now 3 quote and the headings.

I wrote Prof Guinn and letter and emailed my draft to him for comment/feedback.

In the evening I worked on my journal for this paper.
(~4½ hours)

Sunday 25 May 2003
I spent the day reading about competition again and writing about how it affects the market price and the activities of the firm. I am currently on ~2,700 words. I had hoped to finish the paper today but it became very late in the night. I didn’t want to stay up any longer because I have to be up early in the morning. I do, however, intend to complete and email the draft of the paper to Prof Guinn late tomorrow morning.
(~6 hours)

Saturday 24 May 2003
Today I covered market prices and supply and demand. This time, using the draw tool of word I put in a supply and demand curve and it didn’t look too bad. I also talked about the effects of the market on the firm. I now need to complete the paper with a section on competition. I’m hoping to devote at least 1,000 words to it. I am currently on 1,983 words excluding headings and the 2 quotes. The latter are only 6 words long in total.

I also emailed my column today. Strangely enough I am being extra careful about what I write. It vexes me because I don’t think this is what writing is about. Perhaps I should just be content with the fact that at least I get my picture in the paper once a week with a byline.
(~4½ hours)

Friday 23 May 2003
I completed the division of labour section which covered specialisation, technology (automation), advantages and disadvantages when it goes to extremes. In Stephen Robbin’s “Organisational Behaviour” I came across a graph that showed the economics and diseconomics due to extremes of division of labour. I decided to put it in to my paper. Rather than attempt to draw part of a bell curve again I opened up 2003 Crosby on Quality and edited that. The resulting curve (not a bell curve) looked okay and goes under the heading of disadvantages. I then went on to the extent of the market and economies of scale.

I would still like to complete this paper by 26 May 2003 which is a Monday. I am currently on a 1,400 word count. What I would like to do is devote at 1,000 words to the competition part of the paper. I keep remembering Prof Guinn’s advice about paying particular attention to this aspect of economics.
(~6 hours)

Thursday 22 May 2003
I actually did a great deal of writing today. I have also started putting in the footnotes in as I write not only to save time later on but also because this would enable me to do a word count more readily rather than with the footnotes in square brackets. I have noticed, however, that the space immediately above the first footnote of every page is a lot more than it was in my previous papers. I tried sorting the problem out but failed.

I wrote a lot about division of labour and specialisation. All the time I was writing I kept checking the word count. I fear I may go over the 3,000 word limit. I am already on 850 and I have not even finished division of labour.
(~6 hours)

Wednesday 21 May 2003
I re-did the introduction and reshuffled the layout. I began typing on Rushmore’s template but found that the headers had gone funny. The headings 1, 2, 3 etc. wouldn’t come out the way they should have. I eventually had to resort to taking another completed assignment which I ‘saved as’ this paper. However, although the headings came out okay, the footnotes didn’t quite look right.

I re-read the causes of division of labour and purchasing power that leads to division of labour. I read the relevant chapters on ‘Wealth of Nations’, Alfred Marshall’s ‘Principles of Economics’ and ‘Almost Everyone’s Guide to Economics’ by Galbraith and Salinger.
(~4 hours)

Tuesday 20 May 2003
My column appeared. I tried to keep it light-hearted this time. My father liked it.

I completed the introduction and the overview of the Wealth of Nations. I’m actually doing by hand but I know I have to start typing it so that I can at least see the word count. I also planned my case study. I thought about a cosmetics firm manufacturing hair care products. It would be a medium-sized firm of about 100 employees and based in St Albans, which is just outside London. All the time I am writing I am concerned about the word count. Am I going to go over it? By how much am I allowed to notwithstanding Rushmore’s email saying 3,000 is the limit. At first I thought even 3,000 would be too much to write considering the difficulty I was having with this paper. Now that I understand the book better I’m wondering whether I’ll be over.
(~4½ hours)

Monday 19 May 2003
I decided I wouldn’t stop writing, for 3 reasons really. Firstly, Tuesday’s incidence is bound to blow over as my father had reassured my sisters. Secondly, I don’t want to let the editor down. He relies on my column filling that bit of space every Tuesday. And finally, if I stopped writing I’d be letting myself down. Apart from that it give me a bit of pocket money.

I did extensive reading on the neoclassical theory of the firm, technology/automation and input-output theory and the production-possibilities set. I re-did the introduction and rewrote the outline in a different order.
(~3 hours)

Sunday 18 May 2003
I read about competition. I also tried to see and work out a correlation between the Extent of the Market and Economies of Scale. I found nothing specific but an indication that the extent of the market brings about economies of scale and not the other way around.
(~5 hours)

Saturday 17 May 2003
I made extensive notes from the three economics books I borrowed from my friend’s university library. I read widely on the various aspects of marketplace and workplace competition. I concentrated on motivation, improvement and quality. I also made a 5 line start on the introduction. I thought that my fear of writing this paper might disappear if I wrote something down, even if it’s waffle.

I would like to submit a draft of the paper to Prof Guinn by 26 May, hopefully.
(~3 hours)

Friday 16 May 2003
I read the downloads from last night and made notes. I discarded those that weren’t what I initially thought they were.

I also received an email from my friend in the UK saying that “Plan for Profitability’ had arrived. He would post it to me as soon the last of the 4 books had reached him.
(~8 hours)

Thursday 15 May 2003
I received a response from Prof Guinn. The outline I emailed him yesterday was fine and to go ahead with the paper. He suggested I pay particular attention to ‘competition’. Again Prof Guinn’s comments were very helpful.

I went on to the internet and found some relevant articles I could download on ‘competition’, ‘motivation’ and ‘improvement’ in the workplace. I read them and began making notes.

My friend emailed to say that the two books had been put in the post today. Judging by the time it took for the ‘Quality is Free’ to turn up, I should say that I should get the books in about 3 weeks time.
(~5 hours)

Wednesday 14 May 2003
I emailed Prof Guinn an outline of my intended paper. I also received three more text books on micro economics from my lecturer friend at the local university here. I received an email from my friend in England who says that 2/4 books he ordered for me have arrived. I won’t need them until a couple of months down the line anyway. He says that he’ll post them tomorrow.

I examined the 3 books and found some useful information on the neoclassical theory of the firm. On reading this and some other books (Galbraith and Salinger) I could see a correlation between this and Smith’s ideas in Wealth of Nations. According to Galbraith the economic system in use in most western countries is neoclassical and derives much of its claims from those of Smith’s work.

I prepared an outline and emailed it to Prof Guinn.

I resumed reading Wealth of Nations again in the light of my outline.
(~4 hours)

Tuesday 13 May 2003
I couldn’t study at all today. My column came out and I’m afraid I annoyed all of my sisters over it. They didn’t like what I’d written. In retrospect I should have checked it with them first. But I do think that they were jumping the gun a little. And I don’t think I did anything seriously wrong. Maybe I should stop writing, I thought.

Prof Guinn responded. He is my advisor. I’m really pleased.

Monday 12 May 2003
Today I went online to request an advisor for my paper. I decided to ask Prof Guinn whether he’d be kind enough to be my advisor. Unfortunately, after completing the whole procedure I accidentally blocked one of Rushmore’s important email addresses. It took me an hour to undo the problem. I don’t know whether I succeeded in reversing the block. I suspect I’ll find out when I next request an advisor.

I read through all the chapters more thoroughly to extract those points that I could use on a micro level of a case study.

I am very worried about this course. I am uncertain as to whether I’ve grasped the theoretical enough to be able to apply it on a practical level. I am also worried about the word count.
(~3 hours)

Wednesday 7 May – Sunday 11 May 2003
I completed skim reading of the book then went back to the beginning to read it more thoroughly. I haven’t yet requested an advisor because I would like to complete most of the book before emailing the advisor an outline of what I intend to do with my paper.
(~10 hours)

Tuesday 6 May 2003
I continued to read Wealth of Nations. This time I changed by reading tactic. Rather than using a pen as a guide for the words on the page, which worked up to a point for me, I used the long edge of a bookmark as a guide. It actually worked and helped me concentrate more.

I went on to the internet and found Smith’s Chap II and iv. It didn’t help since I already had the book in front of me. I also found that because the book is not mine I couldn’t mark it. I had to resort to post it notes.
(1½ hours)

Saturday 26 April-Monday 5 May 2003
I spent the entire time skim reading Wealth of Nations. The book is difficult to read and I needed a dictionary as I read the book and found that the information wasn’t sinking in. I also found one thing quite unusual and that was that the book had no index. I tried to find an abstract or synopsis for the book on the internet and drew a blank. A great deal of the information is just the same paragraph being repeated over and over again by different authors. It’s as though they have learnt it by rote and are merely repeating it without actually understanding what Smith was saying. I’m sure I’m wrong. Not one synopsis anywhere.

I also received an email for Rushmore informing students that they had discontinued the book review approach. They have also changed the method of requesting an advisor. I think the method is good and it might actually speed things up a bit. The new method is that students complete the online forms and forward them to the advisor of their choice.

I was quite dismayed about the change in approach to the paper since I had intended to use the book review approach for my economics paper. I wasn’t sure what to do since ‘Wealth of Nations’ is so theoretically orientated. I found the difficulty very distracting because I couldn’t concentrate on my reading. Thankfully I emailed Prof Alan Guinn and he was able to respond very quickly. His comments were very helpful.

Journal for BUS2121 Benton on Leadership

Birjees Sarwat Hussain

Thursday 19 June 2003
I received my paper back from Laurel. She found it interesting and there were very few corrections. I incorporated these, double checked a couple of quotes, re-read the whole paper and re-did the word count. It’s gone up a tad and I hope that it’s acceptable. I now intend to email to Prof Smith for grading. Overall, I spent just over 60 hours on this paper. Moreover, it was very enjoyable recounting the incident with BM and his folly.

Wednesday 18 June 2003
Prof Smith responded to my email. He was I was exactly on target and that I could send the paper to editorial. I did this a moment ago.
(10 mins)

Tuesday 17 June 2003
Today I attempted to complete my paper. There was not that much left to do. I needed to complete my discussion of EB’s move to my department, the board’s rationale for recruiting BM and the conclusion to my paper. After doing this I read and re-read the paper for sense and tried to delete unnecessary verbiage. Currently the word count for my paper rests at 3,206. I emailed the paper to Prof Smith for his feedback. I wonder if I have applied his advice correctly.

I then updated this journal.
(~5 hours)

Monday 16 June 2003
It was difficult to work today but even under the difficult circumstances I tried to put in some hours. I tried to complete my discussion of behavioural theories. I was going to put in the leader-participation model but decided it wasn’t needed. I also put a few more headings into the paper.
(~4 hours)

Sunday 15 June 2003
I could not work at all. There was a damned crisis between parents that I caught up in the middle of. I am mad as hell!

Saturday 14 June 2003
The paper has more structure. Today I discussed trait and behavioural theories.
(~3 hours)

Friday 13 June 2003
Today I turned to the analysis of the case of the Senior Licensing Officer situation that happened at CLA. I also noticed that my paper had no resting point so I tried to break up the monotony of the paper by putting in heading and subheading.

I am now about to go on to the traits that are inherent in all leaders.
(~ 3 hours)

Thursday 12 June 2003
I edited my case study by deleting excess verbiage. I wrote the Executive Summary, the Introduction and the Overview of Benton’s book. My introduction relates an incident that happened to me in an Egyptian law firm.
(~3 hours)

Wednesday 11 June 2003
Today I typed up my case history notes. I also read some of the HBR case studies again. I also made notes from ‘In Search of Excellence’ by Peters and Waterman.
(~3 hours)

Tuesday 10 June 2003
I completed the background to my leadership problem. I wrote everything by hand. Tomorrow I intend to begin my analysis/discussion based upon my reading /research.
(~1½ hours)

Monday 9 June 2003
I did not feel well today and therefore could not study. I did, however, write a quick outline of my paper as per Prof Guinn’s advice.
(~½ hour)

Sunday 8 June 2003
I completed reading and making notes from ‘Lincoln on Leadership’ A lot of what of Phillips reported sank in. I hope that I will be able to apply the principles contained in it and Benton’s to complete my paper. Now for the core of my course. The paper I tried to build around my case study. Putting in as much I wanted, when I wanted and in any order. This way I was able to delete the unnecessaries.
(~3 hours)

Friday 6 June 2003 – Saturday 7 June 2003
I started reading ‘Lincoln on Leadership’ by Donald Phillips. What a fantastic book! I am amazed at how adept Lincoln was at achieving his successes. I found some of approaches amazingly effective and sometimes amusing. I particularly like the way he sorted his Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase. Bravo!
(~8 hours)

Thursday 5 June 2003 – Friday 6 June 2003
I read the leadership chapter in ‘Essentials of Organisational Behaviour’ a resource I have chosen for ‘Robbins on Organisational Behaviour’. I also found a copy of ‘Organisational Behaviour’ by the same author. It is the later version and not the one recommended by Rushmore. The theories are interesting and after reading some of them I began to realise where some of the bosses I’ve had went wrong and indeed why some behaved the way they did.
(~6 hours)

Wednesday 4 June 2003
I read parts of ‘My Years With General Motors’ and made very brief notes. I then used Prof Guinn’s advice about just writing as much as I wanted without regard to the formatting or indeed the language. I could then delete the excess verbiage. I must confess that it is easier this. I hope the technique pays off. (~2 hours)

Tuesday 3 June 2003
I read several of the HBR case studies to get a feel for how they are written. I then began recounting a major CEO/leadership problem that occurred at the Copyright Licensing Agency where I worked about 10 years ago. Things certainly went wrong after someone was hired and they didn’t get better after he left. Sadly, because of the Chief Executive, I got caught right in the middle of it. My department was the focal point of the Chief Executive’s decision. What a nightmare!

I started the introduction. I thought that if I began writing something, anything, it would be easier to face the paper.
(~2 hours)

Monday 2 June 2003
This morning I went to my building’s health club library. I remember I had spotted a couple of books that I now think might come in handy just to get a feel for how leaders get to where they are. I found Alfred Sloan’s ‘My Years With General Motors’, ‘The Fords’ by Collier & Horowitz and a biography of Lee Iacocca. I hadn’t realised that Iacocca was pronounced as ‘E-a-coca’. I read some of ‘My Years with General Motors’. The pictures in it are amazing. The old cars are exquisite.

Later I logged on to the Rushmore library and downloaded about twenty Harvard Business Review case studies. Excellent!

Saturday 31 May 2003
Today I managed to read half the book more thoroughly. I enjoyed mentally redoing some of the exercises.
(~3 hours)

Wednesday 28 May 2003
I continued skim reading and finished the book. Like “Quality is Free” by Phillips, this book is very easy to read and assimilate. However, I am still wondering about the approach to my paper. I know it’s practical but in what way. Obviously I am the coachee so what sort of scenario should I be writing about. I have also decided to pick Prof Smith as my advisor.
(~5 hours)

Tuesday 27 May 2003
The book is very easy to read. I continued skim reading it. I found the many anecdotal stories interesting. However, I am not sure how to proceed with respect to my paper for this course. I am curious though and while reading, I ask myself whether the book does actually helps someone who does not have a coach. Can self-coaching actually be done? Just for fun I did think about some of the exercises and particularly found the ‘If I were a… what would I be?’ exercise somewhat revealing. However, I am not sure of its value.
(~4 hours)

Monday 26 May 2003
Today I began skim reading ‘Secrets of a CEO Coach’. It is a very readable book but I do wonder about how much truth there is in her Benton’s claim.

Wednesday 11 June 2003
Today I typed up my case history notes. I also read some of the HBR case studies again. I also made notes from ‘In Search of Excellence’ by Peters and Waterman.

Monday 9 June 2003
I did not feel well today and therefore could not study. I did, however, write a quick outline of my paper as per Prof Guinn’s advice.

Chase. Bravo!

(~1 hour)

Sunday 13 July 2003
This morning I received feedback from Prof Guinn. My paper is ready for grading. However, I went back and re-read the paper, making several minor adjustments. After doing so I emailed the paper to Laurel for her feedback.

I spent time updating this journal.

Friday 11 July 2003
This morning I emailed my paper to Prof Guinn for his feedback.

Thursday 10 July 2003
Today I resolved to complete my paper.

I discussed Covey’s time management matrix and decided to create my own version of it. This matrix seems like a useful tool for selecting the 20% goals on which you should spend 80% of your time. I talked about how goals should be SMARTA as I recall from an internal quality auditors’ course I attended a couple of years ago. I also put in the conclusion, added the appendices of which there are three, A, B and C, the bibliography and the table of contents. I don’t need to worry so much about the footnotes because I now put them in their correct format as I write my paper. Currently I am just over 3,300 words. I would now like to email this paper to Prof Guinn for his feedback. I wonder, though, whether I have grasped the concepts of his suggestion. I would also like to add that a number of major family crises caused several disruptions to my rhythm of study and when writing this paper. Nevertheless, under the circumstances, I hope I’ve done okay. Tomorrow I shall email my paper to Prof Guinn for his feedback.
(~8 hours)

Wednesday 9 July 2003
Today I was unable to work due to another family emergency.

Tuesday 8 July 2003
Today I revised my paper, inserting more information about the Pareto Principle and the various types of goals.

I studied the goal setting theory and various chapters in ‘Getting Things Done’.
(~4½ hours)

Monday 7 July 2003
I completed my reading and note taking from the pages I had earmarked in ‘MBO Can Work!’ I then located the chapter in Covey’s ‘Seven Habits…’ that the website I downloaded last night had referred me to.

There’s a huge chapter on the use of time management matrix. It is so useful. Reading it helped me to learn something about people close to me. I also read ‘Getting Things Done’ by Roger Black and I found some excellent information on setting goals and managing your time. I’ll start on that tomorrow.
(~6 hours)

Sunday 6 July 2003
Today I went on to the internet and downloaded two articles on time management, one of which directed me to Covey’s ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People’. I shall explore that tomorrow. I read MacDonald’s ‘MBO Can Work!’ to extract information on goal setting and I made extensive notes.
(~3 hours)

Saturday 5 July 2003
Today I managed to complete the flow chart. I then went on to create my version of a Gantt Chart to illustrate my schedule of events.
(~5 hours)

Friday 4 July 2003
Today I spent time working out the order of the most important points. After studying flow charts yesterday I began drawing one for the goals. I had trouble with Microsoft’s connectors but one of my sisters managed to sort them out. It turned out that my objects were not in the drawing box. I had to redo the flow chart in the boxes. Once this was done, the rest of the chart was straightforward. I have to admit that once I knew what my target was, drawing the flow chart was fun.
((~3 hours)

Thursday 3 July 2003
I looked at the 80:20 Rule again and realised that I had no citation for it. I had to go back on the net to try and find it. I typed in ’80:20 Rule’ using www.google.com and after a little searching was successful in locating the website. It took me a bit of time trying to replace the heading in Figure 1 but managed it in the end. I also decided to create appendices for a flow chart and a schedule of events rather like the Gantt Chart. (I am currently at ~1,433 words).

Although I have seen flow charts I have never created them for an actual situation. I, therefore, spent time studying flow charts and what the various symbols mean.
(~4 hours)

Wednesday 2 July 2003
I decided to spend some time on the Pareto Principle of goal setting and I found a really helpful website on the internet with a lovely little colourful diagram depicting the 80:20 Rule. I think I might airbrush the heading out and replace it with a more appropriate text.

I worked on the overview of the book and fine-tuned the introduction.
(~1½ hours)

Tuesday 1 July 2003
Today I went onto the internet to try and download any information I could find on ‘The One Minute Manager’.

I also decided to help myself by getting rid of my writers block. I decided to begin my introduction, executive summary and overview of the book.
(~2 hours 10 minutes)

Monday 30 June 2003
Today I was unable to work due to family emergency. I also seem to have a bit of a writer’s block.

Saturday 28 June 2003 Today I received a pleasant surprise. During course 2039 Smith on Economics, I completed and entered a painting into my art society’s members’ gallery. It was published in the magazine and it is on their website for about the next 6 weeks. (www.saa.co.uk/galleries) At least that’s something pleasant happening under the circumstances.

Sunday 29 June 2003
I did manage to do some thinking about 2131. I also discussed a possible goal I could target with a sister who tried to give me some ideas. I eventually came up with a goal and drew up an outline for my intended paper. I emailed it to Prof Guinn for his opinion and feedback.
(~3 hours)

Tuesday 24 June – Wednesday 25 June 2003
I feel a little lost with this unit. When I mentioned it to my sister she responded by saying that I always said that and then end up getting the credits I need. The fact is that there is not much to work with in the book except

One minute goal setting
One minute praise
One minute reprimand

Prof Guinn responded to my query with a different angle to try. I think the suggestion is excellent and quite novel. I have since been racking my brains for some ideas. Family emergencies have deterred me from working or devoting as much or any time to the paper. Therefore, at the moment I have nothing really to work with.
(~35 minutes)

Monday 23 June 2003
I went online today to complete the advisor request form. I would like to work with Prof Alan Guinn and hope he is available again. I also composed a letter to Prof Guinn, in the event that he does agree to be my advisor, requesting some direction from him as to the approach I should take with the paper, bearing in mind my conclusion yesterday. Later in the day I received a response from Prof Guinn. He is happy to be my advisor as am I.

I then emailed my query to him.
(~1½ hours)

Saturday 21 June – Sunday 22 June 2003
I began and completed skim reading ‘The One Minute Manager’. It is very easy to read as I am sure that every one who has heard of the book will agree. I am just wondering how I could apply what I have read to a practical situation. The idea of the three principles, the one minute goal, the one minute praise and the one minute reprimand being used in a boss-subordinate scenario is a little too obvious.
(~3 hours)

More comes later. Keeping watching.
