Food in Hawaii > Hawaiian | American | Asian | Others
For a true Hawaiian experience, you absolutely must have a luau. Forget
whatever luaus you have before because they are not the kind of luaus you will
be getting in Hawaii. There are four excellent luaus I would recommend.
One is
The Ali'i Luau at the
Polynesian Cultural Center.
This package includes canoe ride, fresh flower lei, a night show of over 100
performers, delicious Hawaiian food, and more. Another luau is
The Royal Luau at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel facing Waikiki Beach. This
feast includes food such as Kalua pork, fresh seafood, teriyaki steak, and much
more. The luau ends with songs and dances.
Germaine's Luau is another great luau experience. It contains Hawaiian
food as well as American food. The evening is filled with entertainment
and surprises. Located on a private beach, be sure not to miss this luau.
Finally, the last worthwhile luau I would recommend is
Paradise Cove. This, in my opinion, is the best luau on the island.
It, of course, have delicious Hawaiian food as well as local favorites.
You also learn Hawaiian games, craft, and history at the luau. As you eat,
enjoy the hula and other entertainment.
There are all kinds of American
restaurants in Hawaii. To cover every one of them would be crazy.
Instead I will only cover the ones that stands out to me. You'll love this restaurant. It is called "Top
of Waikiki." It is the only revolving restaurant in Hawaii. It
offers an assortment of seafood and steak. This "disk-like" restaurant
revolves slowly so you can enjoy the spectacular views of Waikiki. Located
on the very top of Waikiki Business Plaza, you can't miss it. Another
great restaurant is "The
Hanohano Room" of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. Enjoy the breath taking
view as the glass elevator takes you up 30 stories high to the restaurant.
You can also enjoy the magnificent view if you get a window seat. This
restaurant offers Continental and Hawaiian flavors. While you eat, enjoy
the jazz and contemporary songs of Stardust. You might want to end your
meal with their signature "Lava Flow" drink. Want to have a meal right
next to Waikiki Beach? No problem. Try
Duke's Waikiki in the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel. Right next to the
beach, steak, prime ribs, seafood, and many other island favorites are served. Their
famous "Hula Pie" is a must have for dessert. Want more breath taking
views? Go to the
Chart House. There you can enjoy the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor while you
eat. The view is especially nice during sunset. Food include fresh catch-of-the-day seafood, prime rib, salad,
dessert, and many more. Hungry for steak? Try
Tony Roma's in Waikiki. This place is all about ribs and steaks.
They also offer seafood. This is the place to be if you are extremely
hungry. These are just one of the many great American food restaurants in
Hawaii. There are many many more. You can also find restaurants in
those free visitor's guide available everywhere in Waikiki.
Want some variety in food? There are some famous Asian restaurants in
Hawaii. One of them is the award winning
Tanaka of Tokyo. There are three locations of this restaurant in
Waikiki. It offers seafood and Japanese style steak. If you want
great Japanese food, this is the place to be. Another good Japanese
restaurant is Kobe Japanese Steak House. The chefs of this Japanese
restaurant actually cooks the
food right in front of you with style. You have to see it to believe it.
They put on quite a show as they cook your order. Kobe offers steak and
seafood combinations and many other selections. I have found
another great Japanese restaurant in an exotic
setting. It is
The Pagoda Floating Restaurant. The restaurant seems to float on top
of a fish pond. Pagoda Floating Restaurant is a buffet restaurant serving
seafood, sushi, and many local favorites. After eating, enjoy a nice walk
around the pond and view the Koi fishes. Finally,
Todai is another must eat restaurant in Waikiki. This is an
all-you-can-eat Japanese buffet restaurant. With over 40 types of sushi, 15 hot
entrees and salads, and 20 different dessert, make sure you come in very hungry.
Besides Japanese restaurants, there
are also excellent Chinese restaurants. One good Chinese restaurant, just
outside of Waikiki, is
Fook Yuen. This place is famous for lobsters because of the low
prices. Besides their lobsters, there are many other dishes that will
light up your taste buds. Another good Chinese restaurant is the House of
Hong. Located in Waikiki, this restaurant includes food such as beef
broccoli, sweet sour pork, mini spring rolls, fried rice, and many more for
a very low price. If you want exceptional Chinese food and are willing to
spend a little more money, try
Legend Seafood Restaurant. There are two locations. One is in
Waikiki, the other in downtown Honolulu. I recommend you go to the
downtown location for a traditional Chinese breakfast. They serve dim sum,
seafood rolls, and many other delicious plates. Their lunch and dinner are
just as good. Finally, try
J.R. Chinese Buffet Garden. Located in the International Market Place
of Waikiki, this is the place to be if you want great low prices on a buffet.
This restaurant features over 50 items including the salad bar and dessert.
The food is prepared in various Cantonese, Shanghai, Szechuan, and Beijing
style.
Korean food is next on my list. One Korean restaurant I really recommend is Sorabol. You have to try their BBQ chicken, kalbi steak, butter fish, and fish jun. There are other great dishes but those are the ones I order all the time. Another good Korean restaurant is Yummy Korean BBQ. This is a Korean fast food restaurant. It is a local favorite and has lots of locations. The one in Ala Moana Shopping Center is the closest one to Waikiki. It is perfect for those who wants food on the go. I really recommend the "BBQ Chicken and Kalbi" plate. Finally, another great Korean restaurant is Yakiniku Camellia II. This is a unique Korean buffet restaurant. Basically you load up your plate with raw food, and then cook them on your own table. It is kind of like having a BBQ. They also have all-you-can-eat ice cream for dessert.
Remember, these are not the only Asian restaurants around. There are other Asian restaurants just as good. Besides Japanese, Chinese, and Korean restaurants, other Asian restaurants include Vietnamese, Thai, Indonesian, and Filipino restaurants. These restaurants are usually small and are far from Waikiki so if you have the time, try them out.
The types of food mentioned above are the major kinds of food in Hawaii. I can't really think of any other kinds of food that is major here in Hawaii. Besides the three categories above, there is also Italian food, Mexican food, and many more. Of course, if you don't want to spend too much on food, there is always fast food restaurants like McDonalds, Burger King, and Jack in the Box. So don't limit yourself to just the restaurants I have mentioned. Try everything if you can and don't forget to use those free coupon books. They can save you a lot of money on some restaurants.
~ more will be added to this section as more restaurants pops up into my mind
