FACULTY OF MEDICINE
The Hubert Kairuki Memorial University (HKMU) Faculty of Medicine has the duty of teaching, service and research. The interaction between teachers and their students fulfil these duties ultimately. In the past medical education centred on-based models, which emphasised a syllabus or specified by experts. Currently most universities have moved to the so-called competence based model, which aims at the performance capabilities expected of a student. The HKMU ultimate aim is to lay out the interaction to pass on knowledge, skills and attitudes.
The teaching of Medical student at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University is strongly community based and it includes health promotion, disease prevention, research and administration. Such training equip the HKMU trained doctor with a wider perspective and capabilities to function at all levels of a health care system. The training will produce a doctor who is a general duty medical officer with a good scientific general education, and with strong public health orientation and well-developed social concerns of the community he or she will be serving. Such a doctor should clearly understand, appreciate and recognise the health needs of the individual patient, the community and the country he/she serves
