The Romances in Harry Potter Book Five

The below theories were written before the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix, in regards to possible romances in that book. For my thoughts about the romances of Book Six, click here. Otherwise, read on!

Well, it looks like Harry and the gang are growing up, and relationships are beginning to become an issue. There are whole big love triangles which were set up in Goblet of Fire and below are my post-Goblet of Fire guesses about the romances of book five. Some were pretty close to dead on, and others never really came about.

Harry and Cho Chang~ Well, I think it's going to happen, and I apologize now to any of you intense Harry-Hermione supporters, of whom I know there are many. But it's pretty definitely going to happen, at least in the fifth book. J. K. Rowling has made Cho the person Harry likes, so as much as we all love Hermione, we do also have the same hopes for Harry and Cho that Harry has. We can't help it. And Rowling would not deliberately make us want Harry and Cho Chang to become involved if she didn't plan to even give him a chance. Of course, this is just my opinion. And even though a lot of people think she won't be over Cedric, I don't know, I have a hunch that if she needs to, she'll manage to. Sorry!

Ron and Hermione~ From the events of GoF, this looks pretty likely, too. It's quite obvious, at least, that Ron began to realize something there have been hints of for a while now: Hermione IS a girl, and a right nice one, at that. In other words, Ron likes Hermione. There are some who claim vehemently that he can't, because they were fighting so much, but these people either never were in sixth grade or are still there, and haven't yet realized that this is just what people this age do when they like one another (although it's quite annoying to be told that that obnoxious little boy who keeps picking on you really likes you by patronizing adults, don't think I don't remember...) The interesting question here is, does Hermione like Ron? The first time around, I just assumed that she did, and the whole Krum thing was a little ego trip (well, more about that all below...) but the more I looked for a place that proved she did like Ron, the less sure I became. This will be an interesting one. New Note: I just read an interview in which Rowling was asked "Does Hermione like Ron?" Rowling answered, "The answer is in Goblet of Fire." What does this mean? I lean towards a definite "Yes, can't you see how often I hint towards that?" And, as further evidence for those of you who disagree, I point to the behavior of Hermione and Ron at the end-of-term feast in the second Harry Potter movie, which J. K. Rowling surely approved. I rest my case.

Harry and Hermione~ Now, this one I have a bet riding on. I think that if it'll be anyone, it'll be Hermione and RON, because Ron obviously likes her and it'd be too cruel to have her like Harry; Ron's overshadowed enough by his famous friend as it is. But Coach swears that Hermione and HARRY is a foregone conclusion, and that the whole bit with Ron is just to throw us off of the obvious. Of course, another possibility is...

Hermione and Krum~ Now, my theory is that this can't really work. First of all, Krum won't be around. And he's really too old for her, and a kind of surly character. I think she'll go visit him over the summer, Ron will become jealous, and that will bring his liking of Hermione out into the open. I really do think Hermione was just flattered at someone who "saw she was a girl."

Harry and Ginny~ Well, I guess I discounted this one, but I've had quite a few e-mails chiding me for leaving it out. Here's my excuse: although Ginny is only a year younger than Harry, she's really been relegated to the sidelines. Even as one of the main influences in the events in Book Two, she was so only because of her passive nature. All we ever see is her giggling or blushing or hiding behind her mother... This all leads to my opinions about some lack of gender balance in the series, which you can read more about here if this is striking a nerve... But to return to the romance possibilities, I guess it's definitely possible if Ginny grows up a bit. I really don't think it'll be Harry and Hermione, for the reasons above, and many people have discounted Harry and Cho because of her recent loss. For such people, Harry and Ginny is a viable alternative. New Note: In an interview with J. K. Rowling I just read, she was asked "Will Harry ever notice Ginny?" and answered, "You'll see... poor Ginny, eh?" This sounds like a bit of a confirmation to me. What do you think?

Neville and Ginny~ Hee hee. So cute! of course it's sad for poor Ginny, but I think Neville is at least a sweet guy, and I'll think he'll grow up quite a bit in the next few books into a very deserving chap.

Fred and Angelina~ I guess this is certainly possible. He did ask her to the Yule Ball, but I thought it was more of a friends/teammates thing than anything. I suppose anything's possible, and they all have one more year at Hogwarts. But I wonder if J. K. Rowling will be able to put things like the twins' love lives in the next book without it being longer than War and Peace...

Malfoy and Pansy~ Hm. well, as mean and nasty as Draco is, Pansy's a few sandwiches short of a picnic. I see her as more a Crabbe or Goyle type, if only because she's not really in a position to improve his status in any way. If we get our Icicle, especially if she's older, I think it'd be funny to see him lovestruck with someone who doesn't return the feeling.

Hagrid and Madame Maxime~ Well, it looks like Madame Maxime isn't too too happy with Hagrid at the moment, but I think she'll agree to help Dumbledore out as an ambassador to the giants, and this will bring her and Hagrid slowly back together. I bet we'll actually see a wedding here in a book or two.

Oliver Wood and Lisl Esherick~ Now, before you go scouring the Potterpedia for this obscure Lisl character ("Lisl?" you say. "What a weird name. It's like someone trying to be Liz, but not. Or that girl from the Sound of Music...") she isn't actually in the books. But she was the first to point out (to me, at least) that Sean Biggerstaff, who plays Oliver Wood in the movie, is without question the cutest boy in the movie, if not the British Isles. So she earned the distinction of appearing here, because if anyone deserves him, she does, even though he's really closer to my age. And I don't dissapprove, don't worry... :P

Love Potions

Here's another possibility that was suggested to me by the same person who hinted I might be missing Fred and George. I hadn't really thought about the possibility of Love Potions, but they have been mentioned in several of the past books, and J. K. rowling is known for mentioneing things inconspicuously and havng them play a major role down the line (example: the portkey). So I suppose it's quite possible, especailly, perhaps, with the whole Harry-Cho-Hermione-Ron-Ginny situation... Interesting to contemplate, but there's no way of knowing what she would decide to do with it. i guess we'll have to wait and see.

Got any more? Any I missed? Let me know!
