Bike messenger killed by police over bogus pistol - this was seen in the New York newspapers a while back, right after the Republican convention in NYC. The bike messenger, who was a former convict, pulled an antique derrenger which had a stopped-up barrel, and probably didn't even work. Police shot him.

"Teen Murdered, Another Shot by Young Men on Mountain Bikes, Eyewitness News' Lauren Defranco (Freeport-WABC, June 22, 2004)" [from http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/news/wabc_062204_longislandshootingpm.html] — This is a wierd one. A teen was shot and killed in a peddle-by shooting. Apparently several friends were sitting on the porch when two young men in mountainbikes rode past. One stopped, and fired shots at the group. A 15 year old was killed and a 16 year old wounded. Police say the killer got away "riding on a dark-colored mountain bike."
Lonerider's commentary: This is a sad one. Hopefully the culprit will be brought to justice. But I seriously hope the legislature hasn't gotten wind of this. All we need is a waiting period law for bike purchases...
