Scwhinn Tempo - THE FIX!

5/19/06 - Added Campy Record instead of the Sakae 165mm's. The Campy's are OLD and 170mm but all the parts -- chainring bolts, bb, and pedals, fit. Used the FSA chainring just sanded the black off so it was a matching silver/bare aluminum. The Campy Record cranks were gratis from a fellow bike nut...

5/17/06 - Added track bars which I got to fit on an old road stem and a bmx brake lever. Previously it had road bars and a road lever and in that configuration was taken on the 5 Boro '06 bike tour of NYC.

The bike:

Built this thing up as a fixed gear almost five months after having it. It rode well enough but really hauls as a fix. Everything was stock except the pedals, setpost, griptape and rims. Then removed the r. brake and swapped out the cranks and seat. The madness began... a newer (aero) lever for said front brake, interrupted partial grip tape, re-outlined the lugs in yellow paint... Then the front wheel threw a spoke. Currently using a wheel borrowed from another bike til I get a decent front for this thing... Shortly thereafter I added a FSA 45t chainring and 17t Surly cog, to change up the gearing to 45x17 from 42x18. All track width now! Then, after a near run in with a bigtruck* making a left hand turn illegally (cut me off) I replaced the old Diacompe 400 brake caliper with a nice Tektro pulled off my Trek roadbike. I had no intention of stopping but relied upon the brake to cut my speed enuff to manuever around the truck. Sadly it nearly did not work! The Tektros cost more than the Scwhinn but it's worth it; I found they have way more stopping power which, when idiots try to run you over, is helpful.

[*-"bigtruck": bigtruk - N., used here to denote vehicles of larger mental capacity than their drivers]

Only "personal" touches to the bike were outlining the lugs with yellow paint, touching up further scratches with black paint, and removing the downtube shifter bosses which was done after the above pic was taken. It came out great.

Below is it's geared story....

Got this today --- 5-10-05 -- and it needed very little. The frame is small in length, tho it's my height, so the longer San Marco seat helped. Everything except the seat, bottle cage, and pedals are stock. Braze-on downtube shifters, sugino cranks with 130mm bolt pattern, and dual water bottle mounts.... well, it's a nice old ride and super sweet. According to some online research, the Schwinn Tempo was here in the lineup: "Sprint, World, Worldsport, Le Tour, Prelude, Tempo, Circuit, Aluminum, Prologue, Paramount...more or less depending on the years." My instincts, then, where correct: A sweeet midrange road ride. And a great candidate for fixed gearing...
